Ha! Ha! Um... yeah. If we were to actually take your "advice", we'd be reading what's already being done by almost every skate publication. WHY? C.W. covers a lot of the things that the masses want to ignore. It's a free country... if you don't like it, don't read it. If you want to complain (standard issue protocol for some), then start your own magazine. Plain & simple.
Lonnie was/is a huge part of skateboarding whether you like it or not. It's great that you're old enough to know of his past achievements... but there are many that don't know and/or are too young. These "Catching Up With" articles will shed a little light on what they've done and what they're doing, currently. Doesn't sound like a crime to me. Also, the magazine in question is making it's way to the U.S. so try reading what Lonnie's been up to before passing premature judgement. Or, don't read it at all... that way, the issue will fall into the hands of someone that'll appreciate it. LOL! For the record, Lonnie doesn't use a Y in his first name. At any rate, have a gosh darned nice day. Next Haterade™ fueled anonymous post? =)
"Gaucho" from Huntington Beach (like THIS is a shock... LOL!) posted: "CW should think about doing stories on skaters that skate, I could really careless what Lonny Toft has been doing for the last 25 years since he stopped skating, and why would I be interested in what he has been doing since he started skating again a few months ago. Anything he did before was discussed adnauseum in every mag that was out back in the day."

Gaucho,
1. 6 years ago we did do a piece on him - in International Longboarder. Most folks never saw that interview.
2. The Catching Up piece is designed to solve the age old question: "whatever happened to?" We have done close to 20 of these pieces and some folks still skate, others don't. Lonnie Toft did a tremendous amount for skateboarding and finally, after a huge amount of time away from the scene, he's back in. If that bugs you, that's your problem. A lot of skaters DON'T know their history and Lonnie is a huge part of skateboarding.
3. The photo of Jake is part of a road trip that the Sector 9 crew took. There's shots of the entire team and a story about what they got up to in Mammoth
4. CW keeps evolving and changing - ...next up is our 5th anniversary issue with all kinds of surprises...and yes, even an interview or two.
as for Pierre,
FELICITATIONS MON AMI!
this is exciting news and I am very happy for you and your entire family. I started Sparky at 3 months standing on the board and 5 years later, he's a skateboard maniac!

I recently picked up the CW issue with the George Orton interview. If I'm not mistakin, didn't you do an interview with him but a few years ago? Seems kind of redundent to interview a guy that hasn't done anything since you last interviewed him other then stop skateboarding, really, my friend went into his shop and he was talking up a storm about his new "Pro Pool Model", then he went on to admit he doesn't even skateboard anymore.
CW should think about doing stories on skaters that skate, I could really careless what Lonny Toft has been doing for the last 25 years since he stopped skating, and why would I be interested in what he has been doing since he started skating again a few months ago. Anything he did before was discussed adnauseum in every mag that was out back in the day.
I commend you on the Jake P cover, is there an interview with him inside, or any of the other current rippers out there. I like CW but the neverending saga of interviews with guys that don't, or haven't skated in decades is pretty weak.
Teasing us with cover shots of guys like Brad, Jake, Sergio etc etc then nothing about them inside is lameO.
Just my 3cents..........

Hey Stubbs,
I just got my copy of the Buyer's Guide down here in Houston, also got my Roarockit kit that has been lost for about 30 days. I would like to think it was just a fluke, but alot of stuff I order from Canada takes forever to reach me. I ordered some stuff from SoCal and got it 3 days later. I blame the border sensitivity since 911.
Later, jaybyrd

The Stubb -
I still have not seen my guide up here in Nor Cal and I usually get my other CW mags about a month after it is "availible". Oh - I also have the so called first class shipping option......... The US Postal Service is the one usually blamed, but I think it's an easy scapegoat. I can send HUGE packages across the country (and to other countries) with the cheapest mailing and it arrives in 2-3 days. I once sent an amplifier to England and the person got it in only 4 days! So I don't think it's the PO.
See you in ABQ. You going, right?

Senor Hackett, I myself live in Rio Rancho just NW of Albuquerque. Whereabouts in the Indian will you be racing? Any cross streets or landmarks would be helpful as I am new to the area. Thanks and may the Gods of speed and turny trucks be with you!

I just picked up the new issue of The Skateboard Mag last night, and in there, there's a review of a new Zero Jon Allie deck that is- of all things!- a 9.75 x 31.5" retro '80's shape....!
The bandwagon's pickin' up speed, boys......
You can google "Zero Jon Allie Eyeball" to check it out for yourself.

Jake got really deep into the pocket of that pool...and I think Jorge Salas did a nice job capturing the mood...
we seem to be having some success with color schemes....
while this issue does not have 6 wheel pioneer, we do have a story about a guy with no arms and no legs who skates.
cheers, Michael

Nice cover Mark!!
Jake is a ripper- Unfortunatly he is healing up with a broken leg- suffered in the Combi pool at Vans a few weeks ago. DOING A LAYBACK! That's how Gnarly that pool is. Jake has a huge array of moves, and skates with no fear- Proves that pool is Gnar.

Maybe a new 'teaser ad' strategy from CW? ;-)

No Way! are you saying that mall boarders aren't real skaters! No Way! That is just.... No way!
I got my shoes at the mall, from a real sponsored mall boarder, he even has a video spot. He did his "blank stare" trick. I am pretty sure he can ollie too.

this is from a section called tools of the trade...it's to help retailers be successful... http://www.twsbiz.com/twbiz/
This is part of the article...read it and ask yourself if you have been treated well when it comes to inquiring about niche skate products...
My guess is that for every 100 shops out there, only 10 actually really follow these principles. What do you think?
Let’s assume you spent your budget prudently, placed ads correctly, and the dollars you spent are driving new customers into your store. A potential customer saw your TV ad or billboard and even heard a radio spot while driving to check you out. What you offer sounds fun, and they’re going to give it a shot and get some gear. They take the time to search you out, even walk into your store, and then unload a bunch of dumb questions. How you react is going to be the meter of your success.
The average consumer can ask a lot of “dumb” questions and often they’re laughed at for doing so. If the responding laughter is out loud, you can pretty much say good-bye to that customer. Nobody likes looking dumb—especially in public or in front of the “cool shop guy.” Making a customer look dumb is a sure way to lose them.
This response is often rooted in the staff’s ignorance and inability to communicate confidently to a given customer. When considering this, remember that it’s really hard to maintain a customer’s loyalty, but it’s ten times harder to gain a new customer. So spend more time training your staff how to properly handle the myriad of personalities within your customer base Building a loyal customer base takes years of hard work and dedication. I have seen shops come and go, and the number-one reason they fail is poor customer service. You can spend a lot of money on advertising to “drive” customers to your store, but all that is chasing after the wind if you don’t follow up with good customer service.
If you get a customer to walk into your store, you should have a customer for life! All staff need to be trained well so we can be effective in this regard.
People come to our stores to have fun. It really is that basic if you boil it down. When they enter your shop and you treat them like a person— not an idiot—they just may buy something! And if they buy something, then you’ve done your job. Like I said, it’s basic.
If your staff is comfortable around the products you sell and knowledgeable about them, you will have a relaxed salesperson who is glad to serve all customers. If you have staff that is uninformed and nervous inside, they’ll come off as such to the customer. An incoming customer wants to have a fun shopping experience, and working with a cocky know-it-all isn’t fun. Remember, the cocky attitude comes from a false sense of knowledge. As a staff member gains all product knowledge, he’s usually humbled by the sheer vastness of it all, and his cocky attitude ends. They gain confidence from knowledge, and thus are able to aid a customer in finding the gear that best suits them.
