Now Bud raises another question!
He said that NHS developed precision bearing wheels.
Really?
Which was first, the Road Rider 2 or the Alligator?
You have to remember that over here on the East Coast all we knew is what was in SKATEBOARDER. Alligators and RR 2s showed up at the same time. Now, I know the popular wisdom has always been that RR 2s were first, but then again I also know that SKATEBOARDER used a lot of editorial discretion to push whatever agenda they preferred. If you read SKATEBOARDER you'd be convinced the Z-Boys invented skateboarding. Well, they didn't. They just got their picture in the magazine a lot. (If you ever want an earful about "dogtown," just ask a Badlander sometime what he thinks.)
So, anyway, who came up with the idea of a 608 bearing? Was it RR or Alligator? Oh, and while you're at it, was anyone actually riding precision bearings BEFORE Ed Nadalin?

Cliff, you're quite correct, as always- but, as it pertains to NHS. I was referring to Independent Trucks, specifically.
So, as such, the complete and inclusive picture would be: Novak, Haut, and Shuirman formed NHS; Haut left; and, Novak and Shuirman develop a bunch of stuff, including laminated decks, precision bearing wheels, and a prototype truck.
Coincidentally, Fausto and Swenson were also developing prototype trucks at around the same time- the Stroker, Rebound, etc- and, the four founders met, and merged forces, to create what we know today as Independent Trucks. NHS handled distribution of Independent Trucks, and Ermico, the manufacturing. So, yeah, I've basically memorized the book already. Sorry.

Bud,
I'm not positive but I think your information might need some corrections? If I'm wrong, please fill my in on what is correct.
NHS was originally three partners. Novak, Haut and Sherman. These were the three original partners, hence the company name with the three initials, "NHS". haut wanted to do his own thing shaping surfboards and left NHS to sherman and Novak. Fausto and Eric came along later.
Thanks, Cliff Coleman

NHS distributed all of the brands that you mentioned above. Independent was originally owned by a consortium consisting of Jay Shuirman and Richard Novak (representing NHS, the distributor) and Fausto Vitello and Eric Swensen (representing Ermico, the manufacturer). Jay died of leukemia shortly after Independent's launch, which leaves two of the original founding four among us today.
I read the Independent book, as you can tell. It's a damn fine read, too- highly recommended from the Budwick.

Somebody help me here who knows the story,
Was there a connection between Independent Trucks, Santa Cruz, Road Rider and NHS? Or was it just a case of NHS was the distributor for these manufactuers?
It just seemed that Indy, SC, RR and later Park Rider were always joined at the hip, especially with their sponsored riders.

Fausto built the trucks for my skate car in 1978. In the mid-80's he and I had some differences when I was working with the NSA. In 1984 he helped sponsor our cross country trek. In 2003 he was a major sponsor of the "Skateboarding Across America - On Board for Lowe Syndrome" trek. The man loved skateboarding. His passing is a huge loss for skateboarding.

I know I've been uncharacteristically mum on this topic all week... I just didn't know what, if anything, to say about it...
Unlike most of my peers in the industry, I only had the occasion to meet Mr. Vitello exactly once- and, that was only this past January, at ASR. Meeting Mr. Vitello was pretty much my Job #1 while I was there- being the hopeless Indy-Pride guy that I have always been (Since '89, for anyone that might be keeping count of such things)... I just sorta wanted to stop in, and just say thanks for the fond memories I've been able to acquire over the years while riding this man's trucks. It seems rather insignificant, I'm sure. However, consider this: There is nothing else- besides eating, sleeping, breathing, and other necessary survival functions, of course- that I have spent exactly half of my life consistently, and predictably, doing. I haven't even been paying taxes for as long as I've been riding Independents! How weird is that?!
Well, tracking the guy down was no easy task. He was quite elusive. The fact that I didn't know exactly what he looked like certainly didn't help one bit; all I remembered were his pictures in the Indy book, which were obviously pretty dated. For three f*n days, I went all over the place, asking anyone if they'd seen Mr. Vitello. "Oh, he was just here! You just missed him! Try so-and-so's booth!" On and on it went...
Finally, I happened upon an older gentleman in a hallway, curled up in a director's chair, obviously trying to escape the hubbub of the circus that is ASR. I meekly tapped him on the shoulder, and asked him if he'd, by chance, seen Mr. Vitello around. He stirred, looked down this hallway and that, and replied to me that it may very well be that I've already found him. I'd asked The Man, Mr Vitello himself, if he'd seen Mr. Vitello. Yes, I am an idiot. Thanks....
No matter. He offered me a seat in the accompanying director's chair, and I got to spend a good half hour or so chatting with him all about trucks- how they're made, why the geometry is the way it is, the history of the company.... all sorts of very cool stuff that would appeal to a certifiable dork like me. I was pretty damned stoked. I guess what struck me was how easygoing and grounded he seemed, in a place that intrinsically lends itself to- invites, really- excessive egotism. He was just really super nice. I'll probably remember that as long as I live. I was so excited, I even called my mom, and told her all about it... yeah, she's sort of an Indy-Pride mom. Go figure.
He certainly seemed to have a knack for positively touching people- something that I would certainly like to aspire to, someday. Maybe that explains why the whole industry- percieved allies and enemies alike- seem to be in such a state of shock right now.
I'd just like to send my sincere condolances, and best wishes- as the rest of the skateboard community is doing- to Mr. Vitello's family, friends, partners, and co-workers. I'm sorry I didn't have anything really wise or enlightening to say, but, I tried. I figured it was the least I could do.

I was speaking with both Glen E. Friedman and George Orton today about Fausto's passing. It is really sad. I also spoke with one of our writers and we will be paying tribute to Fausto in the next issue. The one thing that I remember about Fausto was the fact that he was willing to spend the time for an interview for the book Concrete Wave.
Ironically enough, his generousity paid off and Thrasher wound up with 4 pages in the book. When I was quizzed by one of the now former heads of Transworld why they only got 2 pages, I said "well, you never returned phone calls."
I know that there must be dozens of stories about Fausto....the good, the bad and the ugly. Whatever the case, he has left a tremendous legacy.

That's unbelievable. I was on the phone with him on Wednesday. We all need to pay homeage to him. If there is anyone who converted skateboarding from an activity to a lifestlye it was Fausto. He gave us Thrasher, Independent Trucks, Spitfire Wheels, that's just a start.
What a dark way to start the day.

HAHAHAHA!!! Wow, let me get this straight; I replied, in response, to a post in a lighthearted manner from a C.W. standpoint... and you're posting that I'M bitter? Six graders? Better than? Hmm, it's quite clear that you're obviously angry/bitter about something. Also, I find it rather amusing that the same old tired (anonymous) anti Sumdum rants come from the same old tired writing style every month. Truly hilarious. I'm all about an open forum that this webmaster's been kind enough to let C.W./Michael Brooke have. And I'm also a believer of people being able to express their likes and dislikes regarding the magazine. 'Tis how C.W. can progress and become refined along it's path. Having said that, please kindly point out who these "people" are that don't want to read the mag. LOL!
It's okay... I don't read the majority of skateboard magazines, either. So? To each their own. Trust me, I don't see many people wanting to read the mag, as well... but please explain to me why Buddy Carr and I are constantly out of C.W. magazines every month and people are still e-mailing/calling for back issues.
Bitter? Pot... kettle... black... Hee! Hee! If you really have/had a problem with me, you can always drop Mr. Brooke and/or me an e-mail or call me. Or, keep posting anonymously. My name's Mark Kessenich, what's yours?

Personally, I'm very interested in what Lonnie has to say. Talking to him about 30 years ago had a big influence on my board designs, and after seeing some of his new decks, I'd like to hear about what's behind those.
"Anytime somebody gives an opinion about something you guys come back with this angry bitter holier then thou tude."
I must've missed the "angry, bitter" in SumDum's post, and he does bring up some good points. There's plenty of magazines out there that only deal with "today", and some of us appreciate that there's a magazine that isn't doing the exact same thing as most of the others.
"Teasing us with cover shots of guys like Brad, Jake, Sergio etc etc then nothing about them inside is lameO."
Didn't the issues with Sergio and Brad on the cover have articles that mentioned them inside? And I'm assuming that the Sector 9 article will mention Jake at least once or twice.
Besides, with most magazines (skate or otherwise), the cover shots often have nothing to do with any of the articles inside...
