this is an ancient saying...but it definitely needs repeating at this moment.
We all know that things are changing within skateboarding. We know that this freaks a few people out...especially those who have turf to protect. But you have to embrace change...it's part of life.
We will look back upon this time (in about 20 years from now) in amazement. Yes, a small amount of passionate people can definitey change things...even within the world of skateboarding.
Hats off to Mike Moore for his passion and his guts...
Folks, I promise you, we sure ain't in Kansas and anymore.
Things are going to get mighty crazy over the next few months.

I'd like to think that those skating sisters create a nice medium between all the flowing testosterone out there. More times than not you'll get nothing but love and respect from the girls who are NOT SCARED to charge.
Isn't the one of the epic ideas of skating that everyone does their own manuveres in their own ways?
Where would we be if we all had the same style??
Scary thought.

I just got off the phone with Dave Hackett. To say he is pissed about things would be an understatement.
He fully agrees, and is bummed that the sh*t stirred between the groms and the old guys killed the forum. He yanked it because he felt it was no longer a place for healthy exchange of ideas and information.
He feels too that guys that lurk on web forums talking s#@! are kooks. We should be skating not slinging sh*t. I know that as well...but what else are you gonna do at work.
Dave says none of them make any money from Deathbox and that it all goes back into skating, sponsoring contests and kids. He wondered out loud if any sh*t talkers could say the same thing.
I won't get into any name calling or mud slinging towards any person or company. What I will say is this... We here are all grown men, some older than younger, but adults. ANY OF US SLINGING SH*T AT ANY OTHER SKATER IS A KOOK!!! Remember when it was a brotherhood? Kiss and make up, let's put all this s#@! behind us. None of us are getting any younger, it would be nice to know the other old guys have got your back and don't just wanna stick a knife in it.
We all have our preferences towards product. Tracker/Indy etc. I say even if you don't dig company A B or C, don't slag em. They're supporting our tiny ass end of the industry.
Be cool fools.

It sucks that it had to come to the removal of the forum. I agree with Nick, I met and skated with some cool folks over there, but the abuse was getting out of hand. Just for s#@!s and giggles I lurked on the Tum-Yeto board for a few minutes (where all the idiots that ruined the Deathbox forum live), what a serious waste of time! Nothing constructive was ever being posted... it was all about who could come up with the wildest (or sickest) signature line or avatar. Screw them... they ruined a good thing. They will get whats coming to them. I travel... if you get my drift!

my buddy Josh englund had the issue Concrete Wave issue yesterday , i was stoked to flip threw it yesterday as josh myself and sherm sessioned stink hill.
What really caught my eye was my bro Jeff budro ripping the red sand bowl on the cover.
Also teh spread on Steve Shermans photos was killer.
Great issue , they get better every time i flip through one.
Keep it up.

The DeathBox forum was awesome for a time. IMHO, a couple of things caused its downfall:
- It was connected to the rest of the Tum Yeto forums, so when the kids on the other forums that had nothing constructive (and indeed, mostly destructive) to say, rolled in, it became a bad scene.
- Related to this, the "moderators" (and I use the term loosely) pretty much refused to act to curb what the regulars regarded as abuse.
(This next part is secondhand reportage, as I quit the DB forum in early April): Reports on other forums were that some soap opera stuff spilled over onto the DB forum, and that the moderators used the opposite tack than they had previously. I'll leave that up to someone who was there.
It was fun for awile. I met a lot of nice people through that BB, and skated with a bunch of them.

Grumpy Old Bastard has just informed me that the Deathbox forum is now over...
Gone.
Anyone have any thoughts...tearful tributes?
I liked the forum and thought it added to general mix of things...still, I know it had its detractors.
That's why print, in my book (no pun intended...well maybe) still rules...imagine if you could add up all the time those posts took to write...now, no one will ever know they even existed.
At least with a magazine or book it's your option to burn it!

I would have a vaccine for kids whos 1st question is can you ollie, kids after you tell them you can't kick turn your S9 pintail they just can't help it and thrash your tail and kids who spin the tail end of your G&S 42" cutaway on the asphalt to check out the trucks and wheels.

If you were a chemist and could create a vaccine for the skateboard world what would the vaccine do?
I'd call by myopia interuptus and it would be injected into those magazine publishers who only print rails and ledges...

Go back to the time of when our Country's Forefathers were getting around to writting the Constitution. First, get them all stoked on skating and how they can build a city's infastructure to accomadate the skateboard for fun and for transportation. Then have it written into the Constitution, plus:
SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME!

i wouldn't change a thing! i think back to those days and the pure stoke that we got whenever a new SKATEBOARDER came out; "NO WAY he made that"! or when somebody would get some wheel or board or WHATEVER that was new and bitchin' and we would all take turns riding it, or when we would pull off some move that T.A. or jay, or wally did, or any of a million memories that are blessed to me and thousands like me.
no, i would not want to go back in time, because my memories and my heroes and the fact that skateboarding saved my(and a lot of other peoples')life is indelibly etched in my heart.

I just wanna thank Randal! There are a lot of unconventional trucks now, but he was the first to make a truck specifically for our kind of skating, and then stepped it up with the R-II, the standard against which all longboard trucks are judged.
Also, the eXkate and seismic guys. After 20 years of truck stagnation, these guys hit the scene with wild new ideas. One BIG bushing that twists? SPRINGS? What's next, trucks where every attribute is adjustible with an allen wrench, or bearings designed by top downhill/slalom skaters? Come on...

I would go anywhere and anytime people were stoked on skating.
Some examples:
- Southern California, 1964-5. Skate with the Hobie, Makaha, Jacks teams. Hang out with my friend Pat McGee, and let her know that she'd still be skating 38 years later.
- Bay Area, California, 1973-5. Go skate with my stoked 8-10 year old self and friends again. Clay wheels on sidewalks, schoolyards, and local hills.
- Ocean Park, California, 1974-5. Skate with the 'Bu crowd, burgeoning Zephyr crew, hit Revere, Kenter, Bellagio, Mar Vista, drive out and hit the Vermont Drop, the Toilet Bowl, etc.
- La Costa, California, 1974-5. Watch Denis Shufeldt hit 50+ on a stock 24" Bahne with tiny loose ball wheels.
- Carlsbad, California, 1976. Skate the opening of the new park with the whole SoCal crew.
- Bay Area, California, 1976-77. Pools, pipes, and other large concrete structures designed for water. No photos, no pros, just a lot of excellent and stoked NorCal locals.
- Upland, California, 1977. Go back to the opening of the Pipeline skatepark with way more skills than I had the first time.
- Campbell, California, 1978-79. Go back and skate the Winchester pool with all of the crew again. Watch Cab go from average to incredible in 3 months.
- Cherry Hill, NJ, and Apple Skatepark, Ohio, 1978-9. Skate those incredible parks again.
- Del's Wall, California, 1981. We skated every waking moment. At this point in time, we had a bunch of ramps built at this spot.
- Cab's Backyard, California, and Joe Lopes' backyard, 1982-86. Backyard sessions, barbecue, and beer.
- Tahoe City, California, 1984-6. The Tahoe City ramp scene was so much fun.
- Raging Waters ramp, California, 1988. This ramp was HUGE and fun. 66mm wheels for certain. Super-talented crew from all over the world.
- Santa Barbara hills, summer 1990-1991. After the Painted Cave fire, we had over 30 ridable pools to choose from in just a few square miles.
- Oakland hills, fall 1991-1998. After the Oakland hills fire, we had almost 100 pools to barge.
- Now. Lots of my bros are getting back into it. The Internet is making global crews of friends who travel of thousands of miles to skate together without ever having met before. Great gear is more prevalent than ever before. I'm as stoked as ever!

I would go beyond the era of early skateboarding, to Hawaii circa 1915. Hanging with Duke and the Waikiki beach boys would be the ultimate. If that's not available I would settle for Z-boys at the Fruit Bowl circa 1976. That's the first time I saw a picture of pool riding. That plywood extension tripped me out.

I was also thinking about what it would be like to go back in time with my current knowlege and experience in skateboarding to contests years ago, this is what I have come up with.
I would most definately show up to Del Mar with a Pocket Pistol Stealth TS with Oust Mach 9 bearings, Turner Avalons, Tracker RT-X and an Indy offset and race in the slalom comp. Than, I would go over to the freestyle area, with my Vision deck, trackers and Abec 11 wheels, skate around for a while doing some freestyle tricks of the day. Then stun the crowd with "my new trick" the Ollie. Maybe people would call it the Brain? I would also make a cell phone call while posting about the contest on NCDSA through my lap top.
I'm also thinking about attending Signal Hill and entering the skate car race on a dregs street luge.
Maybe after that going over to La Costa to race with my new Roe Unlimited and PVD trucks.
I often wondered if equipment really made that much of a difference in skateboarding, especially in downhill and slalom. If i could go back in time, would I be able to beat Hester, Alva, Shufeldt, Piercy, Ryan, ect.. because I have Seismic or PVD trucks, or I have Turner or Abec 11 wheels with Oust Mach 9 bearings, and a carbon fiber board? Could boards adapted for modern styles, like wider stances and higher speeds in slalom, and ollies in trick skating work to a big advantage over raw talent? What do you think?
