Stubbs - I voted for the Baby Boomer Skateboarders! Saw your post on the BDS Forum-- here is that info. so Michael and other folks know the background..
I got a call yesterday from a producer of the CBS Evening News with Katy Couric in New York and they caught wind of the piece in the Dallas Morning News a week or so ago about us old farts that still skate and are going to feature us (me and my friends) as one of the three stories that viewers are allowed to vote for to be reported on. If you can, check it out... I sent them a ton of pics and video of Ripper, me and a lot of our friends here in Texas yesterday so we'll see what they use. The voting begins after the 3 stories are shown tonight and ends on Sunday evening. If our story wins a CBS video crew will be flying into Dallas early next week to film and interview for next Friday's feature piece on the ASSIGNMENT AMERICA segment of the CBS Evening News.
Click this link to vote before the deadline Whichever story gets the most votes by 12 a.m. ET on Sunday is the winner.]....... http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/08/17/assignment_america/main3177840.shtml

I was watching gravity games on tv in '99 (i believe) the stand up skateboarding caught my eye. but it was this one run that got me stoked.
Biker raced Rat Sult. Rat slid out in the very first corner. Once Biker saw that, he proceeded to soul carve down that hill.
I believe that was the fist time I seen longboard carving.

Michael: Thank you for sharing that clip. I have so much respect for the 'average joe' who can perform at such a professional level while juggling work and life. He does it because he loves it. He brings it (and in this case, kills it!) without regard for what is popular, and with an understanding that he puts himself on the line, at risk of being judged negatively. It was quite inspiring. Thanks again.

read this part 2nd!
You realize that your life is more complete with the addition of skateboarding and you wonder what took you so long to figure this out!" Sound familiar? Thought so.
This experience from non participant to participant is happening daily within longboarding (and other types of niche skateboarding)...more recruits are joining up. But, all it takes is one breakthrough moment for things to explode
Can you imagine what the people in the opera "industry" must have thought prior to Paul Potts hitting this competition and what they must be thinking now?
Exactly...they are thinking "the sky is the limit!" We have a whole new way to communicate what opera really means and what it can do for people's soul. Let's make one thing clear: Force feeding people opera (or longboarding) doesn't work. But how do you go about getting new recruits? In the case of Paul Potts, it was out of the hands of the opera industry.
The reason why there was a breakthrough is that no one watching Britain's Got Talent would expect opera - especially opera coming from someone who looked like Paul Potts.
The companies in skateboarding that are doing well have connected with people because they aren't doing what all the other skate companies are doing. I believe some in the skateboard industry need to start thinking along the same lines. The skateboard industry needs to figure out what it is in the business of - are you just making skateboards or selling the joy of skateboarding? Sure, Big Air Competitions, while amazing, do create some new skateboarders. But what I think mostly Big Air comps create are more sales for soda and beef jerky companies.
Maybe skateboarding will never have a "Paul Potts" moment. Hell, maybe some of you out there pray that it never happens (selfishly keeping all the fresh asphalt, ditches and secret spots for yourself!). All I know is that I want the world to enjoy what skateboarding has to offer. Like those who love opera, I want to share the love with those who just don't get it because I know so many people are missing out on something that brings me so much joy.

First, let me begin by stating that this is supposed to be on my blog - but for some crazy reason, I can't seem to get into the part of the site that lets me post.
Secondly, before you read ANY FURTHER you must view this clip on You Tube. If you don't view this clip first, the rest of what I am about to write will make no sense whatsoever. Ready...GO!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA
Ok, did you watch the entire clip? Good.
Now that you've seen this clip-ask yourself the following questions:
1. How many opera's have you attended? 2. How many times have you played opera music on your ipod, car stereo or in your home? 3. How many times have you played a video of an opera singer or an opera? 4. How many opera records/cd's do you own? 5. How many times have you ever discussed opera with your friends?
My gut, and I am only going by what I can sense out there is that very few people at this site (or many other sites) have been to an opera, rarely, if ever play opera, never watch videos of an opera, own no opera records or dvd's and probably NEVER discuss opera with their friends.
And yet, in one moment (in this case the tv show "Britain's Got Talent") a person who you'd never think would be capable of bringing down the house by singing opera, does in fact do just that.
Paul Potts went on to win this entire competition. His record hit a few weeks ago in the UK and went straight to number one (it has since fallen). This humble man who worked at a carphone store has been catapulted to superstardom.
What I feel is the greatest idea to come out of this performance is the way that Paul Potts exposes people to the emotional power of opera. You just can't help but be affected by this guy. My initial reaction to this video was exactly like yours: there is NO WAY this is going to turn out good. We often judge things with our eyes and once our ears pick up on his voice, it shakes us up. I would argue that he's done more for opera in 4 minutes than anyone in the past 20 or 30 years (yes, yes...I know Pavorotti).
Paul Potts has injected something into the state of opera that it needed desparately - it has brought in a whole new audience. Opera snobs and purists have had a field day with this new audience (one person likened them to Euro trash on crack). So what! Opera theaters need bums in seats. Record companies need to sell dvd's. My belief is that Paul Potts is like an accessible gateway. He will draw people to opera and once they discover what else is out there, they will explore more, much more.
I sense there are many opera fans who have struggled for years to try and explain why opera is so magical. I can also sense that prior to Paul Potts' performance there were millions of other people who just didn't get opera. I can speak from experience on this one. My father is an opera NUT. I grew up listening to a ton of opera...and hating every minute of it. Until now. Now I am beginning to understand the power of opera. That's the affect Paul Potts has had on me. I didn't really "get" opera because I was forced to listen to it. I needed to understand opera through a different medium. While it might be odd to say this, there is something truly operatic in the way the Paul Potts story has unfolded. Or am I just being overly dramatic?!
"What", you must be thinking, "does this have to do with skateboarding?"
Plenty.
If you ask most people on the street "would you ride a skateboard", "do you own any skateboards?" "do you hang out with people who skateboard?" "would you ever consider owning a skateboard?" I can guarantee most of them would say no. Many in the skateboard industry hav focused so much on males 11 to 18 who street skate that they have completely painted themselves into a corner. I've harped on this for years. Hell, I keep harping on it. Sure, things are changing...but you wouldn't know it if you picked up most skate mags or walked into most skate shops.
If we want real change and real growth to happen with skateboarding it will take an enormous "Paul Potts" moment.
What do I mean by this? Stop me if you've heard this before...
"Many years ago, you remember trying to skate. You didn't think much of it. Or perhaps you never skated. Then one day, you try one of your friends longboards...or you see some folks on longboards. You enjoy the ride. You get hooked. You no longer see skateboarding as something that is for pre teens and teens. You no longer see it as something that is just about ollies, rails and ledges. You begin to realize that longboarding can give you freedom, joy, speed...you begin to understand that skateboarding can have a real affect on your life. Prior to this experience, you didn't give a rat's ass about skateboarding. Now, you are exploring all types of skateboarding and on your way to building a quiver. You're so wrapped up in skateboarding that you hang out at skate websites and all you want to do is spread the joy of skateboarding.

i don't know about tailtap but i just ordered a set of the 71mm from mile high and they were like $48 for a set. I think the 62mm are $42. I would assume tailtap is the same since there is no reason to sell them in pairs (since there is only one duro available).

We are making plans for a KILLER launch party for the new Concrete Wave Evolutions dvd.
this year, Toronto will see the dvd BEFORE anyone in the world.
It's 2+ hours of longboarding, pool skating, slalom, freestyle and just about all other types of skating.
We will have a great ska band playing while we feature the DVD. They are called tea for the voyage. Visit their website to find out more...www.teaforthevoyage.com
I will have more info shortly...we are just finalizing date, time and place. More than likely 7pm and 10 pm shows on Aug 28th
and yeah, Red Bull agreed to sponsor.
we'll also bring the new issue and give out dozens of copies...
let me know your thoughts...I hope you guys can make it! Toronto is close to a TON of US cities...buffalo come on down! Vermont, come on down...New Mexico...well, it might be a bit of drive, but you're welcome anyway!
cheers skategeezer
