Michael, I was wondering why you wouldn't make the short drive from Toronto to come and cover the Top Challenge. It was the largest longboarding event ever held in Canadian history and to date has been the largest downhill event in North America for this year.
Its not like it was short notice, you have still have unused photos and a story from last year's event I've heard.
I hope that this style of riding isn't outside of your vision for your magazine... because if it doesn't fit in Concrete Wave, there's not really anyone left to give props to the dedication these travelling risk-takers put into skateboarding.

44 last Saturday. And as far as Wentzle is concerned, the man raises the best oysters I've ever eaten in my entire life. Mind boggling, jaw dropping oysters. The fact that he hangs with Fred Schneider only help cement the WRIV mythos.

Being privvy to most of your headaches and woes...Skateboarder's tag isn't one of them.
To the rest of you...
I've been with Michael working on CW and other projects for like 7 or 8 years now. To say he is dedicated to skating and his vision of it's portrayal is a gross understatement. Michael is 100% driven to produce the best mag he can. He has kept his chin up and kept on keeping on when many would've just chunked it. I'm proud to be associated with him and this magazine.
Are we there yet? No. Will we keep driving? Oh hell yeah!
So again, Happy Birthday Michael. Thanks for your friendship, support, loyalty, dedication, drive, passion, and for taking me along for the ride.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new issue of Concrete Wave,
every issue just gets better and better.
For everyone's information, the term 100% Skateboarder was in fact coined
by Jay Adams. But is in fact, short for "100% Skateboarder 4 Life" which was tattooed
on the back of Jay's neck in 1990 by Sal at Sal's Tattoo shop in Venice. Jay and Jason
Jesse were thinking about (and maybe even did) do a little company called 100% Skateboarder;
producing some tees, hats, and decks with that tag line on there.
The fact that Concrete Wave is using it as it's tag line is cool, and is really paying homage to one
of the greatest natural born skateboarders to ever ride-

the rant is over on this one...
i am not changing my logo... SkateBoarder can keep their's... Jay already has his tatoo'ed so, I doubt he's changing his either.
Bottom line, I will strive to put all my energy into making this the best mag I can.
Ok, now back to crazy birthday memories/stories.
Today is my birthday. I am at work...then I go see the designer and finish up vol 2 no 2. This what publishers do on their birthday in order to hit the ASR deadine!

I don't think I would get too riled up about someone stealing a slogan that you basically stole yourself.
100% skateboarder, as far as I know has always refered to Jay Adams. I don't know if he came up with it or someone else did, but when I see it I definately associate it with Jay.
How does he feel about your mag using it? Did you check with him? Probably not. Why not? Well, you probably thought it was'nt a big deal.
That's probably what Skateboarder thought too.

'77, first board, some no-name plastic thing with loose-ball bearings...
Feb. '78, hit a sidewalk crack, that I'd been over hundreds of times, RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE, broken elbow, 2 pins 7 weeks in a cast. overheard my grandma (who raised me) tell someone on the phone "He's too clumsy to ride those things."
Spring '78, local park opens, basically a rip-off of the Ocean Bowl, but we have a dedicated slalom run.
There were kids better than me at freestyle and bowl riding, but no one was really into slalom. Equipment progression in that one year was amazing. Z-Flex, Taperkick, Warptail, Fibreflex...
We hosted three regional comps that year and I got 1st slalom in all three. Not just for 12-14 year olds, my times smoked 18 & over. Of course it was my home park and a permanently marked course.
Heck, there were kids there who didn't even know my name, they just called me Henry. What a compliment, even today.
1988, not even skating anymore, married in '89, rode a few times with my stepson, but nothing serious.
2001, did a search on "Henry Hester" ( mine was stolen about '82) and found my way to NCDSA.....Wow, people still slalom.....Holy s*#t, there's a group in DC, just 1 1/2 hours from me!!!
Stradas were in great demand by that time, so I waited until the Fibreflex wheels came out and immediately bought a setup and 50 cones and have been having the time of my life ever since!
I've said it before, but I'll repeat for you, Michael-If I never race anywhere but DC, it will still be more fun than this 30-pushing-40-something guy could have ever dreamed of.

Miss a couple of days, and... phew
'88... Hadn't skated in years. Got stationed on a tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and found a copy of Thrasher at the Base store.
Ordered a Mike McGill complete (you tell me what it had; http://home.earthlink.net/~gottaride420/Old_School_89.html )
and spent a year terrorizing the place, while sharing with other "used-to-be's".
Best memories?
'77 - Fixated on bombing hills on my Bahne... major speed wobbles one day while crouched down low, board shot out to the right, landed on my Chucks, kept going! Butt finally hit the asphalt and spun me. Nothing from the waist up ever touched down.
'01 - Spent my 43rd birthday chasing hot air balloons with GI Joe, then went to the Bear and had my first longboard experience. Cruised the bottom and a bit of the tranny, got far enough up to warrant a "frontside railgrab". Felt so good I have to go to meetings...
'03 - Carving ditches with lots of people I had only read about, and realizing how much fun life still is.
Regarding the legal mumbo-jumbo;
Focus on the mag, Michael. More coverage, more memories, more skating. Let the other guys worry about lawyers.
