Wow. Not what I expected from the nice folks at K2 at ALL.Taking manufacturing offshore from a company whose whole IMAGE,STANCE and SUCCESS are based on the whole "American,Homegrown but Hip"Washington State backwoods-Lockheed thang. I'm saddened to hear that,I really wanted to believe SOMEBODY wanted to keep making things here.Well, for every door that closes another opens...FOR SALE:ONE SKI FACTORY incl.LOTS of FIBERGLASS AND MATERIALS FOR MAKING EXOTIC LAMINATE STRUCTURES W/EXTREME LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY,SKILLED WORKFORCE,NOW UNEMPLOYED,CAN BE FOUND IN NEARBY TOWNS,NOW EMBITTERED,BUT WILL PROBABLY BE HAPPY TO RETURN TO WORK IF JOBS STAY IN AREA...THIS TIME..ALL REASONABLE OFFERS ENTERTAINED..SKATEBOARD MANUFACTURERS TAKE NOTE:INCENTIVES OFFERED BY WASH STATE TO INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPERS ARE RIDICULOUSLY FAVORABLE....IT'S JUST NOT CHINA.(Let's face it,you can't compete with dirt-cheap labor, and it just doen't matter how many people are thrown out of work to make the politicians'wet dreams come true. This is a snapshot of our future if we don't support domestic manufacture

K2's Vashon Island ski factory is closed and production moved to China, press release was around late winter, early spring. The mystique will be based on what can be created next. Look at the little made in China sticker on the snowboards. Curious not cynical, does the longboard have the same? the annual report before the announcement read like this... "manufacturing have been moved to either K2's China or California production facilities (some snowboards) or to third party sourcing operations worldwide. .........the reduction of approximately 200 production personnel and the utilization of approximately 200 temporary workers. The downsizing costs were incurred in 1999 as a result of reducing the size of the Seattle manufacturing facility. "

K2 has been "making" shortboards ever since they bought out Planet Earth a couple years ago. They might have just bought into the longboard market, but maybe they are actually manufacturing them with K2 technology at K2 factories, maybe.

Well, no luck with the search for the BMW,however, the first quarter of 2001 might bring us some news, apparently. They should just put it in the trunk of every M3 they sell(My idea, though I'm not sure if they thought i was joking or not),But in other news,K2 has gotten into the act,I saw one of their decks with wide trucks and no-name clear 70's in a sport shop somewhere in the mountains... THE QUESTION for K2 is..WHY aren't these decks available in the states, and are you, with all your DH,SL,GS and freestyle experience(and extremely advanced technology) going to put out decks with the same attributes as your world-crushing FOUR,WINTERHEAT,and other legendary skis? HUH??WELL?WHASSAAP!!(This is something I used to fantasize about,WHAT IF..k2,BLIZZARD,ATOMIC,HEAD,DYNAMIC and all the ski manu's with cool names(and even cooler graphics MADE SKATEBOARDS?Well,K2 does NOW.THAT'S ONE.

I just recieved a mini 17"x6" Flexdex complete with Mack IV trucks and 59mm Power Paws, direct for $57. The trucks were complete flipper crapola, so I switched them out for my Indy 101's. Ahh, much better. I guess it's the opposite of a longboard, but you ride it like it's one. With the more responsive Indy's and the soft red bushings, this thing carves it up!! The 11.5"A(axle to axle) wheelbase lets you carve as tight as you want. I can cave a 180* circle on a sidewalk and go the other way. It's also real stable, since you don't need to tilt it much for it to turn, and the trucks don't woble much as a result. I've had it up to decent cruizer speed runs, about 25-30 mph, and it is completely predictable. This set-up is my 2nd favorite now, next to the Big Worm tanker. I even took it to the skatepark, and i could finally navigate the super tight transitions at the crappy Bellingham park. But I couldn't hack the crowd. One 12 year old asked me, "So what the hell is that thing called?" I said, "Skateboard, Flexdex makes them in all sizes." I think he wanted me to say "Razor Foot Quad" or something. As I was leaving, I left the Mack IV trucks sitting near the trash can, hoping someone could find a use for them. But this thing is hella fun! The size makes it extremely functional. You can navigate tight crowds and hide it in a backpack! I know this is an old topic, but I highly recommend getting one if you like to skate for fun, not sport, sometimes. That reminds me, now I have something to replace my Sport Fun with.

I don't know if you guys have ever heard of Hammacher Schlemmer. Its kind of a high end adult toy store that does mail order. Sorta a FAO Swartz for adults. Anyway, I was thumbing thru the catalog today and what did I see: a Flowlab!!! Then I saw the price, $300.00!!! You know what say, one born every minute.

This deck was made custom by Martin for my weight(185lbs). It came with R2's, 76mm Kryptos, and super gritty clear grip as well as bearing spacers and speed washers, a nice touch. Quality is high and the different hard woods make for a unique "fine furniture" look. Performance was tested on 4 hills in 3 states this morning.Me,NH,and MA. At speed the wide(10") deck was rock solid and predictable. I found myself carving turns using rail pressure with my back foot like you would on a longboard surfboard. On the less steep hill I rode it more in the middle and pumped tight turns using the flex of the deck. Over all this is a nice set up for riding hills and carving surf/snowboard turns. Especially great if you have big feet and like a wider deck with minimal concave. Terence

I just got the updated Flowlab last week. Huge Improvement over the earlier boards. The new board comes with the proper bearing spacers allowing for smooth wheel spin and no slop in the axle assembly. Way faster. The other huge plus is that it now has a slightly wider Concave deck without all that camber. It really needed the concavity. You can really carve with alot more control now. Also, the camber that my first flowlab has actually changed the angle of the axle, causing wider turns. The flatter concave deck carves alot tighter at speed. I was really stoked with the first round of Flowlabs, but they seem to be improving. If you are looking for a fun carving board that rides alot like a snowboard (freebord is not even close) this is it. I do have to admit that it takes awhile to get used to pushing while balancing on two narrow wheels, and Ihave taken some ridiculously pitiful trips to the pavement just pushing and misstepping, but hey, it's the closest thing I've got until the snow flys!

BMW has a design experiment that they previewed at the ISPO show in Munich in August. The truck system is very very cool. When I first saw it in a design magazine, I thought for certain that it was a piece of vaporware, but at the show there were 10-15 pieces that you could test, the board is big, 38-42 inches more or less and the trucks and wheels are huge, but check out the turning method http://www.streetcarver.com roll over the image in the upper right hand corner. The wheels lean into the turn at the same angle as the deck. V shaped wheels mean straight resistance is minmized, and traction in a turn is maximized. The minimum radius of a turn is under a meter (3 feet), there is no rebound to the system and no suspension, but the truck action is magical, inner wheel extending into the turn and hugging it. Sadly, although they promised that the unit would be for sale at bmw dealers at the start of september, when that date arrived so did a letter saying that the launch was delayed until june of 2001. This is expensive and different technology, which will probably place it on the fringe, but it is the coolest piece of skate design that I have ever tried. I have looked through the archives here and ran across the thread for Strokers, I did not find the source for the images of herb's new strokers, is that link still around? The full patent information for stroker trucks can be found on ibm's patent server.

I had never heard about that board before. And I got the info out of a magazine (not a skateboarding on, I have to admit). So, I guess nothing is as old as the news form yesterday,uh? Shame on me... The price should be something about $450 (the DM/Euro is very weak in the moment). But I after reading the archives and having visited a large BMW-dealer in Berlin, I consider that info not to be taken serious.
Happy hillbombing

Hi fellas,
we all know the famous german cars made by BMW. They hit the street again.. Not with a sports car, but with a longboard. Check this out:
http://www.streetcarver.com/
It shall cost 1000DM, and I think (although today a BMW-dealer in Berlin had no clue of this thingy, so I haven't seen it yet. But I'm on, i swear) that its the most advanced piece of technology that impacts longboarding...
