I have been longboarding for about 1.5 yrs now, and I think its time to upgrade my board. I currently have a 48" sector 9 pintail w/ sect. 9 hardware- I like this length a lot. The main use for my board is downhill. Being able to make tight hard carves is my main concern, but I also need to be stable at speeds of 30-35 mph. I like to carve standing up- snowboard style, not crouched down, grabbing the rail & putting my hand down. Can anyone suggest a setup? Also, are harder wheels or softer wheels better for turning? Thanks for any advice.

They can be fairly tough, that is what those "skate computers" are. Water should really not be a big problem, skating in the rain should not be a big deal after the first couple times, videos show it ,i think to increase sales, it just ruins equipment.Used on a skateboard these computers are subject to greater shocks than on a suspended bike, and our wheels are smaller,i wouldn't doubt if their life expectancy is even shorter than on a bike,i haven't managed to keep a computer alive on my mountain bikes for more than a month.

I've got a Sector 9 Phoenix 44 inch... love it. I'd like to take it off road - gravel & dirt trails - can someone suggest a truck/wheel configuration to do this?

Nice site. I figured it all out. My next question is how much wear and tear can the thing take? I used electrical tape to reinforce the sencor to the truck. Will water mess it up? should I cover the hole that leads into the riser? Let say i launched a four stair for some reason, could I brake it or something? thanks?

Jake, I dunno where you would find a longer board, I'm sure you could get a company to make a longer one for ya though. Check out http://www.earthboards.com/main_earthboards.html for some big 15" trucks under the parts section. They've also got some other sweet all terrain wheels too. I've never ordered from em but their site is pretty cool of what I've seen. Good luck! *Jays

Hey, I'm a newbie looking into purchasing a longboard... I'm just interested in cruising, learning, and having fun. The boards I'm looking at are the Sector 9 Super Cruiser, the Sector 9 Pintail Series 46, the Landyyachtz DH, and the Gravity Aloha Hyper-carve. What are your recomendations for me? I'm sort of leaning to the Landyachtz or the Super Cruiser, but I'm not really sure. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh yeah, does anyone have experience with the Fluid Campus Cruiser or those Flexboard Minis, they just look kinda fun and arent too expensive... So any help on those would be cool too. Thanks!

I've got a 48" Classic Performer and it is indeed a fun board. I wanted a board for cruising and carving and just having fun with on those "flat" days. This board fit the bill. Right amount of flex for me (175#) and feels super smooth under my feet.

Jeff, This is a very nice deck as long as you weigh less than 200 lbs... if not, it is too flexy (in my opinion)
also check the archives for lots of other comments on this any many other decks... HR

Andy, your wheels are on the large side of the spectrum at 76mm,and big wheels go faster as a rule. The 76A is the 'durometer' rating (in "A" Shore scale)which translates in english to the hardness ot the wheels' urethane.80A is probably the fastest, with good grip still.Urethanes in the 74A-80A range are the softest, usually bounciest, compounds.Softer than this, and you're on real Rubber(see XT wheels, especially their 8-Ball).Harder urethanes go fast on smooth terrain(like bowls, ramps, parking garages)and tend to loose traction(slide) easier, although wider wheels can be hard and stick pretty well. Most of us looking for speed and some sliding on tar roads will use wheels in the mid-80's to mid-90's range in durometer.Past 94A in hardness, and the 'bounce' is lost, and wheels that hard are not so fun on tar(but great in bowls, ramps). As to size, your board will like big wheels,so 65mm and up is probably a good thing. Trucks are quite adjustable, just tighten the kingpin.Bushings also play a big role here, and picking the durometer is key to matching your riding style. If you can't turn, use a softer bushing set.If you've squished the holy living snot outa your bushings, get stiffer ones.Generally, you want some turning ability, even at speed, but go too loose on the truck tightening, the 'wobbles' will happen.Carry a skate wrench with you to make adjustments for the size/steepness of incline you're going to be on.While you're here on this site, take the time to scroll down through the wealth of info herein. There's a search function to make digging for one item easier(like type in 'durometer' or '78A' or 'Doh Doh's',and many wonderful opinions, facts, options will appear. By the way,no question is 'dumb',although regular posters' here have re-answered queries like yours MANY times.I'd read up a little, then go to that shop, and tell them how bad it looks that They don't know what's up..

Sector 9 Pintail

I apologize right up front for being clueless, but if anyone has the patience, I would appreciate the help.
I bought a Sector 9 Pintail a couple of weeks ago, and it does exactly what I bought it for---lets me have some surf-like fun during the cold weather (easy to turn but scary at speed). The problem is that I now am beginning to enjoy skateboarding again as a sport unto itself. So now I am trying to learn about the boards and the components (can't get a decent answer from the surfshop guys).
My questions in no particular order:
I assume that my 76mm wheels are 76mm in diameter. What does the 76a rating mean?
Roughly, what is the trade-off between wheel size and composition as far as performance goes? For example, which are better at bombing versus slower carving.
Are all trucks adjustable, and if so, how? Do you just tighten the kingpin (?) bolt, or swap the bushing?
Thanks for any help!!
