Board Review
PS
On 3/4/2001 RooX wrote in from (142.66.nnn.nnn)

ohh yeah, the board will probably not flex much provided you don't blossom up o like 170lbs or so in the next year :) but remember, flex can be your friend it soaks up bumps (great for cruisin) and brings you lower to the ground.

Cheers,
Colin

first board
On 3/4/2001 RooX wrote in from (142.66.nnn.nnn)

first off, good on ya for deciding on starting up longboarding, get ready to use up a lot of birthday and christmas presents as you start to build up your quiver (and you probably will want ot do this :) ive never tried a vision longboard, but im sure itll do the job, and its a great price. For general cruising and carving i think either the kryptonics hawaii 70mm or classic 70's or power paws 70mm kevlar cores, the gravities you choose are a litle big so they put you up higher (and being young im guessing your short) and the gravities are also rougher on bad roads (because of the larger core and the harder urethane) no matter what wheels you get the ydont come with bearings, these are extra, you also need to buy mounting hardwear and griptape. and at least 1/8" riser pads (really depends on your deck/wheels/truck set up though) uhhhhh what else... oh yes, the randals are great trucks, and your sure to like them. for reference a off set bearing seat means that the bearings are not in the center of the wheel, they are moved in close to the inside edge of the wheel and double radius wheel means that the wheel is shaped like a car tire, unlike a square edge wheel which has a round edge (the outside one) and a squared off flat edge. Hope this helps mate, good luck and have fun!
Cheers,
Colin

i think i may have one
On 3/4/2001 mikeh wrote in from (128.173.nnn.nnn)

i think ive got a good board. I took someone else's advice and tried to stay away from the extremes. This is a custom board from solidskate.

Vision Shuvit flame. 43" 8 ply flat w/kicktail. $49.00
are the 8 plies going to give alot of flex? I dont want much.

Randal r-II 180mm 50 mm $50.00
I've heard that the general feeling is that these are very good trucks if not the best. Is this true?

Gravity queens of the stone age. 82a 76 mm Double radius profile off seat bearing seat.$30
What is double radius profile? what is Off seat bearing seat? Is 82A very hard. Im looking to get a mix of speed and an easy ride, and stability. If I buy these wheels as part of a custom board do they come withe bearings?

considering s&h and that im gonna need to buy bearings, this totals up to $161.00 and if i dont need bearings 5 bucks under what i set out to spend.

Mike,

$150 out the door is going to pose a small problem... my best advice would be to contact either Glen at solidskate, or Marc at longskate and see what type of a deal they can work you... HR

Thanks. I weigh 120 but I want to be able to use it for a few years. Im in seventh grade and I want to be able to use until 9th grade at least. I want to use it for transportation of between 1/4 mile to 3 miles or so at a time and recreation. I want to spend as little as possible and still get good speed and stability. At abseloute most, $150 with S&H.

Sector 9 Super Cruiser
On 3/2/2001 Fred D. wrote in from (38.37.nnn.nnn)

I just got my S9 Super Cruiser from SolidSkate.com. I got it outfitted with RII's, 76mm Gravity Fu Manchu wheels (translucent green), and S9 greaseball bearings. It's a real sweet set up, and a totally different ride from my other board, a Landyachtz DH. The S9 carves so beautiful and is long enough to do some walking tricks and stuff, which I like. It has a little kick tail, but I find it real hard to do kick turns and stuff with it (at least compared to my DH) so I'm not really sure of its function. Oh yeah, I love the graphics too... a big picture of an ocean wave on the underside. Overall looks like it will be a great addition to my board family.

Peace

Barfoot 47" Tri-Stringer
On 3/2/2001 JP wrote in from (206.189.nnn.nnn)

Well, I received my Barfoot 47" Tri-Stringer yesterday and only rode it for about an hour (it is cold in NY and snowing today). My first impression when I opened the box was, awesome. The board is very sturdy and is rockered (i.e., opposite of camber). The deck is well made and has a cool clear resin grip on top. When I rode it around the block, I felt as though I was hauling ass on a longboard in the water--such a longboard feel. After I came inside my house, however, I removed the wheels immediately and slapped on Krypto 70mm. Made rolling over cracks and rocks a lot better, but I caught a little wheel bite so I want a higher truck. It came with 3/8" angled riser pads and Tracker trucks (no offense, but I don't like the trackers at all--it makes this deck too heavy). Since the deck is 9 1/2" (I meassured it yesterday), I will add either Randalls, Indy's or Exskates) immediately as funds become available. Anyway, the board has a cool factor and is easy to walk. Also, if you put your rear foot on the tail (it has a semi tail because of the rocker), you can tic-tac and kick turn it. Rocker is definitely nice--it is also very stable and comfortable if you put your feet between the trucks and it is a good carver. If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me!! Be good--JP

Thanks for the Advice =)
On 3/1/2001 sheila wrote in from (38.179.nnn.nnn)

Thanks to all for your advice on my first longboard. There seems to be so many different boards - and sadly, there aren't any decent board shops out here in the northeast so I had to online order. I finally decided on the 9 from Sector 9. Am a bit hesitant thinking that it may be too much board for a beginner, but I guess we'll see! ha! I will let you know how my first ride goes.

Flowlab Composite 36
On 2/28/2001 jana wrote in from (206.184.nnn.nnn)

Some guys let me try the new composite boards Flowlab is making in the Presidio yesterday. They flex great and really pop through turns better than the maple decks. They had a new truck system on it too that made it faster than the old one when pushing in the flats. Hope they run under $200.

Glen,

The phone number does suggest a So Cal locale... trucks sure look like the ones I saw... the guys were a little sketchy, didn't want any close up pics taken. Actually irratated me a little bit.

The rider they brought with him was able to lay down some real smooth lines. I could barely stay on the thing myself!

The deck is different in the pics... these other guys had a flowlab deck... HR

has anyone check these out?
I saw it at ASR, it seemed kinda out there but who knows.

The video they had running at the show, showed a guy using it much the same way the carver trucks are shown. The two big wide wheels remind my of the Hobie Sundancer.

kicktail
On 2/28/2001 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

the only noticable difference, would be if you had two equal length boards the kicktail would keep you from mounting the back truck at the end of the tail.To be a funtional kicktail the shape of the board would have to be wider, giving less wheel clearence and maybe a stiffer flex, might effect traction in bumpy corners.

Landyachtz Beavertail
On 2/27/2001 kaspian wrote in from (208.244.nnn.nnn)

My 8-yo son Tristan desperately wanted one of these for Xmas. I set it up for him with eXkate Turbos and oldschool 9" Tracker trucks. We only got a chance to take it out once before the Maine winter overtook us -- and Tristan was not overly eager to share his new sled with the common run of parents -- so please regard my comments as extremely tentative. BUT...

My impression overall is that this is a hot, "touchy" board, extremely responsive, maybe a tad underbuilt for the "average size guy" (as we say around here) because of the narrowness around the trucks, but very cool nonetheless. I'm not sure I get the point of the big tail, which seems like so much conspicuous non-functional wood. But Tristan loves doing tailie shit with the thing (at low speeds, of course).

I wouldn't hesitate to add this to a medium-sized quiver, but wouldn't consider it as a primary board. YMWPV.

Yo guys, anyone know if buying a Landyachtz Beavertail is worth the investment? I like the shape, cuz of the footplant in the front and how it thins out in back, but it just looks like it wouldn't work. Does it carve like a dream or a Nightmare?
