Originally, I thought the long/less-long board thing was "just me". I'm happy to hear that someone else has had the same experience.
My problem isn't in so much in riding the shorter board as it is in "finding the tail". Pretty embarasing when the rear leg goes SWOOSH (into thin air) after a couple of pushes. Or, when the rear foot slides back to the tail only to end up on the ground.
Seems like even a TWO INCH difference will screw me up (or at least require that I make a conscience effort to compensate).
Same as you: Ride the shorter board FIRST!

This is difficult for me to report but a good friend of WAC Longboarding, a fellow boarder, has passed away this week. Matt was riding a local hill and hit a patch of gravel and wrecked. He was not wearing a helmet and the force of the fall cracked his skull and caused his brain to swell. After being in a coma for almost two weeks he was pronounced brain-dead and his family made the very difficult decision to bring him off life support.
I am not sharing this tragedy to scare people or two dissuade interest from this sport. Rather, I want to educate the longboarding community about the importance of helmets. We will never know if Matt would have survived had he been wearing a helmet, but we can speculate that it might have helped.
Please, please wear a helmet each and every time you ride. I encourage all boarders to pass Matt's story along in the hopes that more riders will choose to ride with a helmet.
Thank you for you time. Ride hard, ride safe.

without a lot of history, I have a question for you longboard and regular board riders. I finally have found a longboard that really rides like I want to ride. Its a 39x8 single kick (23.5 wb) with full-tracks and cambrias. yep, thats right, no gullwings!
Here's my problem. Once I start sessioning, I can go from my regular 30" pig to the longboard. But, I cannot go from my longboard back to my 30". It screws me up royally! So I skate the first half of my session with my pig, then swap to the longboard. then never swap back, during that same session. Is this a common problem that you guys experience too. Even swapping from my old '77/'78 vintage 30" riders back to my pig is not this bad.

Scenic Highway / Statesville contest

Marion, it would be great if you guys could have a downhill contest. If you add Steetluge and Buttboarding to the standup downhill, you will get a whole new group of people to show up. Does downtown Statesville have any big hills? It would be great to have a slalom race, and downhill race in the middle of the city. You guys need to meet me up at the Scenic Highway for a bombing session. The camping is great, the scenery is really nice, and the hill is super smooth. There is hardly any traffic, and you will hold a constant 40 to 45 mph speed for the whole 3 miles. The great thing about it is there is another 3 mile hill at the bottom. Anytime you guys want to go, I'm in, I even have an extra buttboard if anyone wants to try it out. This is a great hill for bombing standup because once you hit 40mph it just stays at that speed all the way so it's pretty safe. It seems like you go on forever . It takes close to 5 min to get down the hill

Hey Marc! Dude, great to hear from you! To answer your question, YES, we are trying to incorporate a downhill portion to our contest, especially since the Soap Box Derby Hill is so fast. I will give you a call when I get back from NY(the Farm) and we can talk about the butt boarding. I am interested in giving that a shot myself! The local DHB'ers are talking about a road trip to come ride that hill of yours! It looks great. I want to get a shot at that thing!
Talk to you soon!

I was wondering the Downhillbillies Statesville Slalom contest will also has a downhill race. I just got some new leathers and my Buttboard is ready to roll. You guys need to have standup, luge, and buttboard events. You could also have just a standup contest and Buttboard demo rides. I have an extra Buttboard for anyone who wants to try it out

WAC Longboarding wants to invite all boarders in the Boulder/Denver area to our weekly Board Meetings every Sunday evening. They are a great chance to meet other local riders and demo some of the latest gear. Once all that is done, we pack it up and ride the local hills 'till the sun goes down. If this sounds interesting check us out at www.waclongboarding.org or email us at waclongboarding@yahoo.com.

Just a reminder, many of hte DHB crew are going to be sessioning at Hobby Park tomorrow in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on the rocket ride that is the Soap Box Derby Hill. This is going to be a low key session of longboarding, bombing, sliding, and slalom so come on out and get your groove on. A major jam is in the planning for late August with swag, raffles, and a whole bunch of stoke fuel to go around.
If you are in the area come skate with us. You will be glad you did!

The Scenic Higway near Marlington WV is great!! It has super smooth pavement, hardly any traffic, and 3 mile downhill. It actually has two 3 mile downhills that meet at a V at the bottom for plenty of runoff. I rode the Buttboard and it was a consistant 45mph all the way down. Once you get to 45mph it just stays at that speed. A standup longboarder would go 40 to 45mph for the whole 3 miles. You can camp at Watoga state park just a few miles away. Just bring a chase truck to pick you up at the bottom so you can head right back up the other side for another 3 mile run

Yeah The park is all street with ledges and rails, that's it. It kicks ass (for ledges and rails) but yeah it is lacking considering I perfer bowls. Kettering is about 10 min. south of Dayton, about 50 miles north of Cincinnati. I leave for school in about 3 weeks but I go out about everyday I don't work. Peace, and best of hills to you all.

I think it is Kettering (or somewhere in the Columbus area) is the total street park. I agree, skating's becoming (once again) more integrated and a park lacking elements of transition and flow is very short-sighted. I saw pics of that street-only park and was like "what the heck would I do with that thing?!"

Rich, Is that the park tha has absolutely no transitions? I hope they changed the design on that and added some transitions. Kettereing was the place, I believe. They wanted a total street park. I think that thinking is behind the times (it would have been ahead of the times if they would have done it in 1990), but they've made their statement. I like transitions cause ollieing a longboard is too much work. I'd still be up for checking it out and definitely bombing some hills.
I have many friends in Dayton Ohio. Marc (pictured in a post by lenny down the page) and I got 1st and 2nd place at Surf Ohio's indoor mini ramp in the 80's. I also particpated and got 3rd in surf ohio's 1st indoor street contest held at the dowtown convention center. Jeff hartsell, Jeff Kendall, Steve Olsen and Mark Gonzales were some of the judges. The town has a rich skateboard history producing some epic rippers like mark Heinzeman, Erricson, Kevin "Squid" Dickman, Mike Hill and Robby Dyrdek and more. It is home to the skatebaord empire of Alien Workshop. Whoda' thought, Dayton Ohio.
I have a great # of dayton stories: the indian, red dog's crash in the snow, the hotel session, raining ketchup and mustard, car in ice cube.....
