i'm new to la and live in venice. i used to bomb hills in suburban ann arbor, michigan. now i'm in the birth place of skateboarding and i'm having a hard time finding 'quiet' hills to bomb. the backside of marine in santa monica is fun but cars are always pulling out. i've heard about canyon rides up the coast, but i am curious how people avoid traffic. which canyon roads are better than others? anyone know what happened to flexdex? any websites dedicated to longboarding in los angeles?

Went slopestyle longboarding on the local hill with Gary Holl (pro freestyle and slalom skater) and he was busting a ton of cool tricks. Old school kick flips, walking tricks, spins, walk the dog, one footed wheelies, manuals, space walk, slides, etc... The technical freestyle tricks do translate well to a longboard and it was cool how a bunch of tricks could be tied together into a flowy run down the hill. Pretty good for an old dude...

I use 83mm, 92mm, and 101mm Flywheels. I need two 9/16 riser pads to keep the 83mm wheels from touching my nosewalker deck. Even then, I'd want the board to be lower for stability at high speeds, especially when i move around on the board or ride the back half of it.

So even with 9/16" risers, you're getting wheel bite?

Ed Economy all the way... I've never ridden one, but Sector Nine boards just don't cut it for me. Plus, your really going to want those cut-out wheel-wells. It looks nice anyway. I just might sell my nosewalker to get one.

bauer, you might try asking the guys over at floridaskater.com for info...west palm has the Y and alan's place is over there on the east coast...you may feel it's too far north for the trip from miami, but if you can get to Kona skatepark in Jax you should...orlando has a couple of good parks ( Oviedo and Orlando park )... good luck!

Park on a skiboard

I take my 5'4" skiboard to a street park here in oregon. There is nothing like taking a pocket on a longbord with RII 180's. It has a completely differnt feel from shortboarding the trick is finding parks with enough room between transitions and roll in points. Here is the rundown on the park that I go to. http://www.skateoregon.com/Hillsboro/Hillsboro.html

On occasion I'll take my 38 inch pintail to the park near my house, carve the street course and work the transitions. Its is layed out just right, no tricks really but lots of carvin turnin and holdin on to speed that no one on a shorty can acheive. They always ask how it goes so fast. simply put you can pump and work every little bump and pocket. Ohh soo fun.
Stay low....stay loose

gravity makes a 52" x 10" board, I got one and cut out wheel wells and I am now using it for a carving board. If you don't mind putting some manual labor into your board you might look into doing this. youcan check out the board at gravityboard.com

Has anyone ridden the concave Comet 45" pintail? I have huge feet, and am concerned it might be too narrow toward the back. Also, if anyone knows of a 45" by 10" (approx) board, I'd be keen to know about it.

John Dillon - thanks for the compliment.
If there's a chance to photograph Ed Economy - I always try to get a good shot - because he's ALWAYS helping run the slalom races all day , when I usually see him !
Here's a pic of Ed coming at me at full speed - going into a carving/bottomturn/slide with his longboard !
My brothers and I met Ed at the Euclid "U" Ditch in 1976.
Ed's kinda like the "Duke" [Kahanamoku] - - of Longboard Skateboarding, don't you think ?
-I do. ..................- Rene' CANNONBALL Carrasco !
