Rod,
Are you in North Carolina? Dude, if so you need to plug into the Downhillbillies! www.downhillbillies.org. Either drop me an email with your contact information or go on the forum on the DHB site and post up your info.
No need to go to California...they do have awesome hills there and you should go ride them someday....but you can ride right here!

Give us a shout.

SHANES SETUP
On 5/5/2006 paul steuri wrote in from United States  (207.200.nnn.nnn)

Dude those blus sector nines suck, if you slide em, the urethane comes off the hub!
Get some Abec 11's fo sho, I would get 75a gumballs, but those are pretty fast, but i think its what your looking for, if not that fast then get some grippens, they are grippy as hell, and if want sort of a balance between the two, get flashbacks, they are great. But over all I would say gumballs, and for durometer for any of these wheels i would say 75a, but if you get grippens, 78a. For bearings Its all about biltin, I have ridden those things through dust, mud, and practicly and river in the street for over a mile, and they are still fast! reds are fast for they're price, but rust like crazy! I think you'd be ok with the randall's, and with the bushings they come with, but if you are looking at bushings, khiro's and doh-doh's work well with randalls. You might want to look into indy 215's, i love them. nice and wide for stability. But over all stick to the abec 11's, those sector nine wheels are no good in my opinion, sliding isn't th only thing the will tear the hub out.

Setup Advice
On 5/2/2006 *TheJBomb* wrote in from United States  (206.110.nnn.nnn)

First off if you want wheels that wont slip and have good grip you have got to get 72mm/75a Nineball Wheels. I'm all about bombing hills and sliding with my deck and these wheels would not allow me slide no matter what. These wheels are exactly what your looking for. They are anti-slide.

As for bearings i strongly recomend that you go with the ABEC 7 Speed Demons.
Bushings? Sector9 Marshmallow Bushings are pretty sick. They allow for awsome flawless carving.
And i recomend that you use Randall 2 Trucks. Really good at preventing "Death wobbles."
Thats my advice for you, use it or abuse it...

Setup advice needed
On 5/2/2006 Shane wrote in from Australia  (61.69.nnn.nnn)

Ok, I'm new to longboarding and need some advice from those more experienced. I started on a shortboard about 9 years ago, but all I really wanted to do was cruise around on it. I got my hands on a very cheap longboard setup, but it wasn't much good for anything but riding slowly in a straight line. Just recently I got myself a more serious setup, but I want to replace the trucks, wheels, bearings, etc. The deck is exactly what I want, which is 110cm long double kick concave. I'll tell you guys what I want from a longboard, and keeping that in mind we'll see if you can answer some questions for me. I want a board that will travel at good speeds, not massive break every bone in my body if I fall off speeds, but good speed over flatland and mild downhills. I am not interested in bombing at all. While travelling fast I want good stability and the ability to pull off good stable turns without sliding out, and definitely no death wobbles. I'd prefer a wheel that will hold onto the ground over one that will slip, but also I need one that will handle rougher roads and won't wear out too quick. I guess I just need a good balance between the two there. I won't be using the board in bowls or pools, just cruising the streets and carving it up. I want to get stuff that will help me get what I want out of the board, but will also last the distance. Ok, so knowing what you now know, can you answer these questions and give me some recommendations -
Wheels -
What durometer wheel do you recommend?
What diameter and width?
Bearings -
What sort of bearings can I get that are good quality but don't cost to much? I can get ABEC 7 Speed Demons for about $24AUD, any opinions on these?
Bushings -
What hardness of bushings should I get?
Trucks -
What are the best trucks to achieve what I want? What width is best for me? I hear that the Seismic trucks are great for stable turns at relatively high speeds and are supposed to be awesome for everthing except bombing, so would these be the way to go? If so, do I still use the wedge risers with them?
Any advice you guys could offer would be awesome.

Cool Crash Story
On 5/1/2006 *TheJBomb* wrote in from United States  (207.163.nnn.nnn)

This sunday i had my 18th birthday BBQ and all my freinds were over and about 10 of us were bombing the hill i live on. I was flying down the hill and turned onto a street losing control and slaming a parked car. I hit the widsheild and fliped over the car and slamed hard. The window shatered and i got glass all over me cuz i wasent wearing a shirt. I'm blessed to be okay. Walked away with a few scrapes and a cuncution. The moral of the story? Watch out for parked cars, they'll hurt you.

Longboarding in Philadelphia area?
On 5/1/2006 clark wrote in from United States  (68.46.nnn.nnn)

Greetings,

I am new to the NCDSA site/forums, so apologies in advance if I am posting into the wrong place (and would welcome assistance if so).

I live in Southern New Jersey just outside of Philadelphia. I have recently gotten back into longboarding and as such seek:

1). Good carving/bombing/longboarding sites in and around the Philly area
2). Information on longboarding groups in the Philly area

If there are no such groups around, any ideas on how I can start my own?

My initial sense is to start or join a group with folks in a similar age range (I am 46) and interests -- surf-style carving/crusing/longboarding/hill bombing.

That is not to say young people would be excluded (one of my best longboarding buddies is my 14-year-old son). In fact, I would enjoy introducing the youngins' to surf-style skating.

Thanks for your comments.

- Clark.

stoping power
On 4/23/2006 kyle wrote in from United States  (68.116.nnn.nnn)

alrighty boys if ya need to stop there are many ways 1. you can drag your foot (not my fav. cause its a waste of a shoe) 2. CARVE!!!!! carveing is the best way for stoping unless you can slide , if your a beginger than practice on REALLY small hills then work your way up , at first when you carve to stop make the carves long and mello than when you start lossing speed make them more wide and short. 3 . alright the third one is my favorite because you could be goin mock 12 and pull out a slide for ATLEAST 20 feet!!! To slide you'll need some gloves , i'd just use leather work gloves at first then when you get good I went to lush boards.com and got their slideing glove for a lup of change (about 75 bones) but their stationed in the U.K. but their worth it .... well i hope i helped and if you need any more help e-mail me back ....

oh yeah buy the way any one who knows the cheepest way to get a board press, i'd really like it if you e-mailed me back with some info -Kyle

HNLS, amos is right. Don't overextend your current abilities by skating roads that cause you to pick up speed quickly. In fact, practice stopping on flat surfaces for awhiel then gradually work your way up.

Stopping
On 4/20/2006 Squid wrote in from United Kingdom  (82.138.nnn.nnn)

Hi there, there are 3 ways to stop...firstly the basic - you take your back foot off the board as you're travelling and let it drag on the floor, the more weight you put on this foot the bigger the drag on the ground the faster you can slow down, after some practice you can slow from some very high speeds to zero pretty quickly, once you are moving forward with that there is also the slide stop - there is a page dedicated to that...of coarse there is also the old favorite of falling off - a little more painfull but very effective!

Greenwich
On 4/20/2006 Squid wrote in from United Kingdom  (82.138.nnn.nnn)

It seems this section is for the USA on it's own but thought I would post here in case any Uk London based longbillies don't check the UK page as it's all Slamlom! Well the time has come - I have been off the scene for the last couple of years - although never put my boards down...I was wondering if anyone was up for Greenwich park next Wednesday - this is primarily for DH and carvers - all you flat land racers more than welcome but you have lots of places to play and there have been times (in the old days) where cones laid down in Greenwich incurred the wrath of the Park Police (not that I mind a row with them but it cuts into sk8ing time...) anyway hi to any of the boys that used to meet me down there and to any others still hanging around in this overgrown playground that I love....

Ok, So you should try some 70mm/75a Bamboo Series Wheels. They have this lining on the edges that are slip resistant, perfect for carving. They are really strong wheels and last forever.Mine take a beating alot and they still ride nice.
