AdamH: No worries on the questions....funny you should mention the part about filming it. My wife said the same thing last night...except in a sarcastic manner. I think her actual words were "Why don't you film it so I can see what the hell you have been talking about all *@#$&! day!" Ha ha.
Actually, the guys and I talked about it some on the drive back. I like your suggestion about using a van. I have an F150 pickup someone could actually sit in the back and film. Just got to find some buddies willing to get up at 4 am and then ride down a mountain watching us have all the fun!
As far as safety gear, I basically wear elbow pads, knee pads, helmet, and heavy leather work gloves (sometimes have to scrub off speed in the front side turns by touching the road.) I had ordered some sliding gloves from Boziboards but they didn't get here in time for this run. They are suppose to be here this week so I am going to test them out to see if they are a possibility.
Talk to you soon!

NCLB, You aren't rambling. I appreciate the first hand account. I can only imagine the exhilaration. Have you considered filming any of this? maybe get some buds with a mini van to open up the back and ride in front of you filming the whole way down. You could also have folks on the side of the road in different locations with video cameras or even still cameras. With a run that long, people could actually move ahead, pull over, film you, then pass you and do it again. I don't know just sounds like something worth seeing.
Sorry to bother you with so many questions but what kind of protective gear do you wear for a situation like this? Anything beyond standard elbow, wrist, knee and helmet?.

421 Run
On 6/6/2004 North Carolina Longboarder wrote in from (63.167.nnn.nnn)

AdamH: Thanks for the words, dude. It was great run this morning. I have been replaying it in my mind all afternoon (after my nap...had to get up a 4 am to go make the run). To answer your questions: So far we have not had any issues with the law. As you know 421 is a US Highway and not an interstate so at sunrise on Sunday mornings it is not patrolled very frequently. (A North Carolina Highway Patrolman actually lives about 1/4 of the way down on the left of the run and we just have this rule that you have to make your pivot away from his driveway so that we don't wake up his dog!) That is the only time we make the run and June and July are the only months we have attempted because of the early amount of daylight. The sooner we roll in at the top the less traffic. We were at the top at 5:45am this morning and could have rolled off then but one of the guys was having to make an equipment adjustment. I was riding my 46" Dregs cutaway with 180 Randalls and 75mm Red Kryptonics. My Bozi hasn't got here yet. The softer wheels seem to do better because a couple of the sections has a little rough pavement but nothing major. They held pretty good on most of the backside pivots but a couple of times I got a little heavy on the back and did a little unplanned sliding. There is one section where they have actually ramped the pavement up on a guard rail on the left and I actually got two wheels up on the guardrail itself. (Real cool idea but really stupid at the speed I was going). As far as my max speed I really don't have a clue. The damn thing is so wide, so long, and so big it is hard to get a perspective on the speed. I was carving it pretty hard in every pivot and was down in a crouch on both backside and frontside, standing up between the rolling between turns. Backside was hard railgrabs to make each pivot and scrub off enough speed. There is one section that you can actually bomb straight down the fall line because there is just this slight incline section at the bottom. I imagine I was going close to 45 mph there because a car coming behind me took a while to overtake me. (again another stupid move). I was down in a complete tuck and rolled right on over the incline section like it was not there almost.
This is my only 3rd time down it and I think today was my best run of it. The only problem with the run is there is no way to actually get your legs use to being on the board for that long of period of time and with that much work needed. Even when you are trying to go slow you have to work the board so hard on both sides of the road as you make your pivots to set up your next shot across the road. I actually started getting some cramps. toward the last 500 meters or so.

Sorry to ramble so much. It's just been on my brain all freakin day. We hope to get another shot at it later in the month. Weather was perfect today but that is not always the case. I started the ride wearing a light bicycle rain shell but got pretty damn warm and took it off while in one of the more mellow parts and shoved it in the pocket of my OP cargo shorts (my favorite skate shorts of all time!).

Have a great week! Thanks again for the post.

NCLB, That's awesome. I've been down that strech in a car . Probably going slower than you were.(The person that was driving was scared out of their mind and I was too young to take the wheel) What a great place. Have you ever had any trouble with the Law doing that? just curious. Also, what would you say your average and top speeds were? What board were you riding?? New Bozi ??? Thanks for sharing.

Today's Ride 4.5 mile Run Non-Stop!
On 6/6/2004 North Carolina Long Boarder wrote in from (63.167.nnn.nnn)

This morning at exactly 6 am 3 Carving Board enthusiasts and I lone longboard skateboarder rider (that's me) made our first run of the summer down Highway 421 east of Boone, NC starting at the top of the mountain and the new Blue Ridges Parway Bridge and carving down the mountain toward North Wilkesboro, NC. As I have described in the past, it is a 4 lane highway winding down a mountain with no median and a turning lane down the middle for almost the entire run and 4 lane's wide with no median the entire 4.5 mile length. As always it was like nothing I have ever ridden. I started my watch when I rolled in at the top off the side rode and 30 minutes and 36 seconds later I pulled a powerslide at the bottom beside the car left to shuttle back (I was not trying to go super fast just turn long carves and pivots at speed). As I have said before the grade of the route is about 6-8% in most sections and 5% for the rest. The state has paved the bottom half fairly recently and it was very smooth, the only obstacles being the embedded reflectors in the middle of the lanes. They are spaced far enough apart that they really don't come into play too much if you set up your carve right. When I say it was a 30 minute run I mean literally without stopping. I only stepped off my board once and that was at the top of the hill when I realized I had carried way too much speed early going into a backside pivot at a guard rail. My adrenilin had me pushing way too hard out of the top. That was pretty freakin stupid. I got my composure back and the rest of the run was just ridiculous! I felt liked I was stealing something at the bottom...it was so good I felt like I should be paying someone for that ride! Oh, that's right I have with my taxes! Thank you Department of Transportation of North Carolina for building such a fine piece of asphault off of that mountain and failing to consider a median! Damn, what a rush. And traffic was very light, with only 6 or 7 cars, two dogs, and one dude in a truck offering me a ride back up the hill cause "he was heddin dat way to go fishin'", the whole ride.
As a note of interest, the guys on the Carve Boards finished 19 minutes behind me. I actually walked back up the hill 1000 meters or so and finished the last section again with them.

Needless to say, I am toast now! The drive back (its about 1 hour) seem to take twice as long. Thanks for letting me share.

Gravity
On 6/5/2004 AdamH wrote in from (66.177.nnn.nnn)

Pre- School, Thanks for the info. I just got a sector 9 that is 38" and it's my first longboard. I like it alot but I also want something a little longer like a 42". I suppose I'll gradually go bigger. I am considering a long DogTown board. Anyway, on the Flow video , I think my 2 favs were Isabelle Claudle and Yancey Meyer. They definatly didn't show enough of Isabelle. They have more of her on the website than they do on the DVD. I thought the stuff Yancey was pulling off was not only Rad but he did it with a smoothness and style. Same with Isabelle. I thought there was more than enough of Sergio Yuppie. He's a Badass for sure. I appreciate all types of skateboarding but am personally a bit tired of seeing photos and videos of people riding rails and jumping steps. I looked into longboards with carving the streets in mind and maybe a little skatepark stuff. I had no idea about the diversity of longboards. Opens up a whole new world.

Gravity vids
On 6/5/2004 Pre-School Rider wrote in from (24.53.nnn.nnn)

AdamH,that's almost a funny review,as most of the longboarders here that saw "Flow" were bitchin' that the park riding and kickflips go too much press, while the mad bombing, sliding, and full-on flowin' segments were Too Short! I myself would've loved more footage of both Mr. Coleman and Sergio Yuppie in the sliding realm, and more of Cabbage and Edwards as well. As for Gravity Boards,I've yet to ride one I didn't like.I'd love to see them get more tech in build,as the all-wood approach has it's limits in higher performance, but for Woodies,Gravity makes killer stuff.Their wheels aren't as fast as some, but do very nicely, and come in a nice range of sizes and durometers. Set it up right, make sure you know what the board/truck/wheel combo will do for ya,and you'll be pretty stoked on Gravity boards!

Gravity Boards and DVD's
On 6/5/2004 AdamH wrote in from (66.177.nnn.nnn)

I ordered a couple of DVD's from Gravity. One is called Flow and the other is a 3 in 1 special. I got them for $15 each off the Gravity website and they were at my door in 2 days with regular shipping. Still trying to figure that one out. Anyway, the videos are nothing but longboarding- Hills, slolam, skate parks(including KONA) Drainage ditches, pipes, pools etc. They pretty much covered it all. Well worth it.
Does anyone on here own a Gravity Board??? How do you like it?
Oh yea, they threw in about 10 stckers also.

G-Flash- when you figure out a date for your trip, post it here and I'll try and round up a few old timers a see if we can make it over there. Kona is having some sort of an anniversary party in a few weeks. I think it's 30 years. I'm pretty sure Kona is the oldest Skateboard park in the country. Anyway the party looks like fun but Kona is fun no matter what.

Bozi Boards Unsolicited Testimonial
On 6/4/2004 North Carolina Longboarder wrote in from (63.167.nnn.nnn)

Just a point to the group about my interaction with Jeff Y. at Bozi Boards. If the board is a good as his customer friendly approach this board will be the absolute freakin BOMB! He took a special interest in my riding style, terrain I normally ride, what I was looking for in a board, my body type and size, etc. He has totally put together as custom a package as possible mixing and matching wheel durometers, truck geometry, and deck flex. Jeff went out of his way to accomodate all of my questions (which were too damn many). It was extremely refreshing to deal with someone who actually gave a crap about customer service. I will let you all know how the board turns out but my gut feeling is that it will be great especially based on the amount of time Jeff invested in advising me on my selection and set up. Thanks Jeff for your help and I look forward to getting my new ride.

KONA J-bowl

Only been to Kona once. I will return. Couldn't get enough of the J. The SNAKE!!! was fun, but the J-bowl was heaven. We drove 5 hrs, skated in 90+ degree heat for 3 hours (well beyound exhaustion) chowed some tacos and hit the road for 5 hours home. If I ever get rich, I'll be adding a J-bowl to our local park on my own dime. So sweeeet.

Snake run @ Kona
On 6/3/2004 AdamH wrote in from (66.177.nnn.nnn)

G-Flash, there is a decent snake run at Kona and a nice J run with a bowl at the end plus a good freestyle area and quite a few other amenities. Go to the site(www.konaskatepark.com) and checkout the photo gallery. It's basically a photo tour of the whole park. Not sure about Daytona though. There is also a place at Atlantic Beach which is east of jacksonville called SkateLab. It's an indoor skatepark. I've never been there though. they have a website as well.

We have a VANS park and a public park in downtown in O-Town with nice bowls for vert skating but no longboard downhill or snake run. Hey AdamH is the Jacksonville KONA park have a snake run? I am 37 yrs old and when I was living in Orlando growing up we had a skateboard park in Kissimmee on the corner of state road 1-92 and highway 441 - O.B.T. I was maybe 11 or 12 at the time and it only stayed open for maybe a year. It was called"SKATEBOARD WORLD" Go figure huh! Anyway they had a rad snake run that was half ditch and half pipe with a steep hill to start off on . The run was a good full city block because it ran the perimeter of the entire park which encompassed some bowls and a freestyle area. I miss that park!!! That was the only reason to go to Kissimmee outside of GATORLAND. Now I live here almost 25 yrs later and am forced to share spots with rollerbladers and young kids on popsicle sticks scuffing ther boards up by doing all kinds of tricks except crusin&carving!

By the way, does anyone know of a Longboarding magazine??

Mate if you want to be see at night you need to get some of the flux LED riser pads. Three super bright LED's in the pad; you'll want to get 2 sets (white front red back maybe). They are quite pricey 20 of your American dollars each! But they are super bright and kind of cool, + if you want to pimp your board up get the funky colours and turn them inwards to light up the bottom of your board, outdo the local Garry boys in their done up cars. You can get them from the long skate shop:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/longskate/riserpads.html

Good choice on the cosmic 2 I’ve got one myself (the phat barrel graphic) sweet board although not great for real speed, especially with the crappy trucks you have. Some randal II's 150mm would be best, nice a turny give you a real surf feel, but if you can afford it replace the bushings with some decent one's like the bones hardcore.

I’m sitting here having just had an exam and with one more exam to go, in my engineering finals, before I finish university, all my friends are talking about how drunk they are going to get and all I can think about is getting back on my longboards and hitting the hills, slashing some cutbacks and practising by berts at the park. Then lying back after a hard session and blaze it up accompanied by a nice cold beer. Itching to get back on the board as I’ve just had three months off with a bruised kidney! Looking forward to a summer of fun and frolics surfing and skating here in England.

Best get back to the books, but I’ll be thinking of carving the hills, just 24 hours to go.

Skating at night
On 6/2/2004 AdamH wrote in from (66.177.nnn.nnn)

Hey people, This is my first post on this forum. I see alot of people talking about cruising at night. Sounds good to me. I live in Florida so it's a little cooler at night. Does anyone wear anything reflective or say a light like a headlamp or........??
I am actually just getting back into skateboarding. I used to skate in the 70's and 80's so I guess I'm a geezer. I am still waiting on the arrival of my longboard but I'm really excited about it.(should be here on Friday 6/4) I didn't want to go too crazy with the money right off the bat so I got a 38" Sector9 Cosnic 2 with 70mm Kryptonics and some lameass trucks by an unknown Co. called Kore. I got it for $109.00 shipped off of ebay. I'll probably upgrade if I start to get into it. I plan on starting slow and I got all the pads and a helmet on the way too. I'm 38 years old and never broke a bone & don't plan to start. I really just want to cruise maybe hit KONA if I get comfortable enough. They have a Geezer night on Wednesday's. Anyway if you guys have any answers for my first night riding question or any advice for an old newbie....I'll take it.
