Hope you are well...

Hey G- Flash,

Glad to hear you got an Alva reisssue; I saw one last week, and my wife is going to surprise me with it for Christmas!

I too began skating after a 20+ year hiatus, grabbing the board of my dreams and after paying a lot of money for it, skated it a little just to do it!

Now, I am riding Bulldogs with my daughters, and having the time of my life doing it! Don't put off riding your board one more day!

You don't have to 'vert it; just take it easy, carve, find a hill or two and gradually acquire the skills you need. Then, you can hit the 'park when you're ready to. There's far too much fun to be had just riding along, with no pressue to do tricks or anything else. If the skatepunks down the road laugh at you, or call you a poser, laugh back them, or flip 'em off: that still works after all these years, too!

Don't worry about your weight: I go a svelte 245# these days and do just fine. Use your board and have fun!

Regards,

Bill

Lansdowne Banked Slalom....

Several racers in last saturday's Outlaw banked slalom race did so on longboards, however most folks were sporting slalom boards or kickflip decks....any deck was allowable. It was an hour-long jam format. lbk placed 5th on one of his longboards and Q raced on his Bulldog LB. Both surfed it up around the cones with style. Longboarding is alive and well in Baltimore!

I hadn't checked the NCDSA board for a while. I haven't skated more than 5 minutes here and there for a couple of months. Injuries continue to plague me. I was turning the corner on ACL/MCL recovery when I blew my hammy running sprints.... It kicked me in to full guitar mode. It had been creeping up on me for a while... about 8 years ago skating started pushing guitar out of my daily mind set, and now guitar is pushing back. Both good expressions of soul. I need to find a way to balance both, but there's that time thing and work adn family and volunteer stuff and friends that don't skate adn .... It was interesting to check the board and see folks talking about collections of drums, basses and amps. Perhaps I'll be telling a story of skate stoke soon. Until then, rock on...

On 10/24/2004 GlenD wrote in from United States  (216.102.nnn.nnn)

I leave for work at about 6:30am - 7:00am each day.
Most days I like to get out at 6:00am and cruise the hill I live on.
It's 9 blocks long, downhill, 4 lanes wide and little traffic at that time in the am.
I just celebrated/mourned my 41 birthday. In my younger years, I never
would have imagined that I'd still be skating at 41.
Being a working adult who can afford a bunch of decks is great.
My favorites are,
1. Ed Economy bank rider, Invader trucks, Green Kryptos.
2. Gravity Carve 46" (custom extra plys and deep wheels cutouts), Seismic truck (German 150mm), 70mm Power Paws.
3. Afroman Big Worm, Exkate 201 front, Invader 180mm rear, 65mm ower Paws.
4. Afroman pimp Daddy, Exkates 101's, 70mm Krypts.
5. G&S Teamrider (original not reissue), Mid Traks, Road Rider 4's.
6. SMA longboard, Indy 166's, 70mm Kryptos
7. Dewey Weber, Baku trucks, Turner wheels.

The feeling of freedom carving the hill in the darkness while coyotes wander the neighborhood. The sounds of the wheels skittering when you push the carve hard is awesome. There is no better way to start a day.

G-Flash's Story

G-Flash: Great story dude. It is awesome that we have a forum like www.ncdsa.com to share the stoke. It stories like your's that is bringing skaters from before "the second death" ( I love that description) back into the sport as it grows once again. In the small town I live in outside of Charlotte I was skating alone a great deal and until I got hooked up with some other locals who have been drawn back to the flame this forum kept me connected. Thanks for the awesome story. Now get to work on getting fit so you can shred!

I have a huge drumset/ snare drum collecting habit! I've had this problem since I was sixteen. You could just imagine what my garage looks like. Funnything though I stopped skating around the time I got my first car (16)1983 or so, some where near the second death of the sport, combine that with the local park closing and my not too great start on a *#$%@& orange nash single kick with stoker type ball bearing wheels and you combine that with the girl chasing and you see why I made the switch to music.Well now It's 25 yrs later and I am now back on collecting skates. My quiver is now up to 7 and my latest is a ALVA reissue with TRACKER mids reissues and ABEC 11 70's Flashbacks in a 88a duro. I will dare to say this: I used to dream about this set up when I was 12 but my dad could not afford this. The deck was 45 bucks, trucks 35 and green 70mm Kryptos another 35 clams .It's no wonder that my nash was purchased at a TG&Y store for 18 jacks. Now I finally have one and I am scared to even attempt to ride it . Can you say VERT at my age and weight? Can you imagine a slam or a hipper. Before I could just sneak my stuff in on my wife ,and things would just magically appear if she noticed anything new. To call my wife from the hospital would be the end of me. Worth the risk? Hell Yeah!!! I plan on skating the set-up soon not for me but for my dad who I recently lost and who bought me my first car and not great boards or drumsets and thats why I'm doing it now. 1976 BONZO kit in stainless steel! A RINGO kit! A buddy kit in white marine pearl! This is great therapy! And when I loose some pounds I will show the popsicle gang at the park how to carve a bowl and draw some lines!

In the musical equipment world, such gear acquisition is commonly referred to as G.A.S. Just ask my wife-like person. The only way to get rid of GAS is to somehow stumble on the 'holy grail'. Even then, things start churning before long and it comes back strong. I'm happy (for now) with my basses and amps, but I churn for wheels, decks and trucks. My Insect/Randal/Gumball combo completely satisfies my cruising and bombing needs, but there are other diciplines... Re-discovery of past pleasures when you're old and well-off is a good thing! Yes, completes are much cheaper than bass guitars as well.

Addicted To Boards!
On 10/22/2004 North Carolina Longboarder wrote in from United States  (63.167.nnn.nnn)

Eric S. : You nailed it dude! I am addicted. No doubt about it. And you are right about the cost. For the price of one set of Down Hill Spinergy Mountain Bike Wheels I can buy 3 boards. One racing season I went through 3 Cannondale Cad 3 frames on my crosscountry bike (thank God for partial sponsorship).

Regarding the filming of the 421 run. We have the crew in place and we have been playing around with a camera locally to get a feel for it. We have decided the best way to film the run is from the back of my pick-up truck in front of the rider. We just need to set a date and do it. I have three more guys who are wanting to go make the run. The only issue we have now is that we are rapidly getting shorter days and the earlier in the morning the better for traffic. We may have to wait until Spring rolls back around but that will be cool because by then we will have this filming thing down. Two weeks ago we actually set up a fixed camera at the bottom of one of our local haunts and filmed with an infrared lense our night runs. The picture came out too grainy to transfer to the net so we are going to play around with a better camera and some lighting. It was weird watching myself coming out of the darkness and taking a turn at speed...

Thanks for keeping up with me. So far the count for 2004 is 5 boards. In my own defense, I did sell the Dregs Maggie I bought to one of the local riders.
I know I am going to suck at Slalom (hell, I did back in 1979...) but I think I just got to buy a kick ass board! Dude, that was the way I was with bikes...can't just start out slow...no...got to go full freakin throttle. Go big or go home! That's my motto!

Funny dude, I remember not long ago you were thinking about getting back into slalom by getting your feet wet with an inexpensive Bahne Black Hill complete. At the time I thought, yeah right - this guy is gonna go with more is more! How many boards will you have acquired in 2004?? They *are* much smaller and cheaper than mountain bikes... By the way, did you ever shoot video of the Highway run?

We are really into supporting 'other' styles of skating and feel this would be a great way to show off a different side of skateboarding in our area and get some pubilicity. Please let me know what we would need to consider or if I'm posting in the wrong area!

Thanks,

History of Longboarding_ HC props!
On 10/19/2004 North Carolina Longboarder wrote in from United States  (63.167.nnn.nnn)

HC: Great link on the Transworld article. I had not seen that particular one.
By the way, I think Michael Brookes "History of Skateboarding" book covers longboarding as well as all of the other evolutionary aspects of our sport.
I think you can get it at www.tailtap.com.

Dude, I am the prime example of how the reemergence of longboarding (and the availability of quality equipment) has drawn a former skater back to the sport.
During the 70's and early 80's skating was my main sports focus along with bicycle racing. Flatland freestyle, hill bombing, slalom, bowl/pool/ramp riding, were all a part of my skate repertoire. My influences were from Dogtown via SkateBoarder Magazine and the local rippers in the Charlotte, NC area. When I went to college I started playing rugby as the demise of skating as I knew it began. I continued to race road bikes and in the 90's got into mountain bike racing heavily. In 1999 I had a serious crash that ended my mountain biking (well, my wife and doctor ended it by threatening to leave me and quit treating me). I had stayed away from skating for over 20 years until one day in 2001 I walked into a "rock and roll" shop (read paraphenelia shop) for kicks and saw hanging on the wall a 38" Think Longboard deck. I was stoked to see such a board and bought it on the spot. It hung on my wall in my basement as decoration for almost a year until I happened upon a set of vintage 1984 Sims Street wheels in a box in the back of a bike shop that I was digging around in for some used parts to a old bike I wanted to build up. I bought a set of Indy trucks at the local sports store and proceeded to get out on the street in front of my house. It was great. I had these incredibly cool flashbacks from back in the day and it completed fired me up. A couple of months later a friend of my teenage daughter shows up at my house riding a Gravity Ed Economy Model 58" longboard and I was absolutely hooked. For the last two and half years I have been building my quiver, riding as often as possible, and gathering as much information as possible to get caught up with the sport as it goes through its currents renaissance. I have hooked up with a couple of other older skaters and our crew is growing by the week. Our local "legend" is growing (ha ha) with the younger skaters in town as "those crazy dudes pulling sick slides and bombing big hills". Our crew has grown to over 8 skaters who have been regularly showing up for out Tuesday night jam sessions. It has been a blast. I am in the process of purchasing a slalom board and cones and plan on introducing that to the crowd. The last time I did slalom was in 1979 at a competition at Concrete Connection Skatepark in Charlotte (long, long ago, bulldozed).
Longboarding has brought me back to the sport that was my true first love. I am planning on continuing it until I can't walk....then, watch out boys, here comes Grandpa on a buttboard!
I had to visit my orthopaedic surgeon this past week. It has been his job to put me back together over the years from injuries sustained in competitive rugby and mountain bike racing. He just laughed and shook his head when I told him about my skating now and my run down Highway 421 coming out of Boone(search 421 on this forum to see the description of that run). I was there because of carpal tunnel and when I told him about how my wrist was hurting when doing Coleman and two handed toe side slides he said he appreciated me putting his kids through college!

Roll on brothers and sisters....thanks for indulging my ramble this morning. I best get back to work...got to buy a new slalom board....Pocket Pistol or Roe Racing? Can't decide.....
