Call outs
On 3/17/2005 Callin' y'all out! wrote in from United States  (68.252.nnn.nnn)

It seems like there's been a beef on about every other board I frequent on NCDSA this week; so I figure there needs to be one here! Here we go:

Dankdownhiller- You tapdance like Shirley Temple!

NCL- Rumor has it you don't floss after every meal.

D.Holt- You were seen singing "Sailing" at a karaoke bar while wearing an oversized diaper and a Richard Nixon mask!

Lenny- Your old vans smell so bad that your wife won't let them in the house, and you walk like an Egyptian.

All in good fun.

See you bros in a few days!

Later skaters,
LP- DHB

Back Up Plans For Jam

Lenny: I saw that weather report to and have called my boys at the National Weather Service to see what they are saying (My dad has worked for them part time for 30 years believe it or not) and they are going to call me back tomorrow with the updated forcast. Like you noted, long range forcasts are not really worth the paper or computer space they are written on. We need to wait until the first of next week to see what is going to happen. What we need to do is talk about a back up plan/dates. I will give you a shout this weekend.

DHB Jam II
On 3/16/2005 Lenny- Downhill Billies wrote in from United States  (68.252.nnn.nnn)

Only a week and a half until the DHB Jam II and I'm ssssssstoked!! I've also been able to log a lot of LB time in while coaching Junior High Track.

One small thing, though. www.weather.com is calling for 60% chance of precipitation for Statesvile on the day of the jam. a) That's a 40% chance it won't rain and; b) They normally are doing well to get it right a day in advance, much less 10, but are there any back up plans in the event of rain?

No worries on the short voice mails...remember, my girls were little once and they used to be terrors. Saw Shannon today at La Dolce....sounded like a great time was had by all. He said Barry was rippin the pro bowl. Shannon has been spreading the word on the jam. I think we are definitely going to have a night skate that night downtown.
I will call you later. I am going to be out of the office today but will give you a shout on the mobile.

Springs And Stuff
On 3/9/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

Greg Olson and Civ2B:
My Bozi Mad Bomber II (the same board Dankdownhiller, Darren, and Bandy ride..some of the DHB'ers) is set up with the red springs in the rear on 180 30 degree Seismics and yellow springs on the front 180 45 degrees. I road them stock for a while but played with the tension and with just a little adjustment. Dankdownhiller I think was there but I know Darren was there for sure the day the Troutman Police (extremely cool to us I might ad) clocked me with a gun at 35 mph in the bottom turn on the run we call Top Gun at the Spot and I didn't get any speed wobbles at all. I know I have been faster and didn't get the shakes. The only time my Seismics have felt unstable was when the front retainer clip (at the bottom of the center pin) came off without me knowing it and I bombed Top Gun. The center pin was very very loose and I should have crashed but I guess God was saving that for later. Taught me a big lesson about checking my equipment before I ride.
I think if you are really going for a true speed board set up then you need to go for the Randall DH's. My next board purchase is going to be a Big Red X that I am going to order directly from Chris Chaput and have him set it up. But, again, that Supertanker is made for cruising and I think you will be happy with the turny Randall 180's or the Seismics.
Greg..my Bozi was the first board I ever owned and road with Seismics and I was like you used to forcing a turn rather than letting the trucks do the work.
I think if you go with the red springs front and back you will get closer to the feel you are after but it is still going to be turny. If you go to the Seismic website and drop Dan Gesmer an email he always responds back..some times takes a little while..but he does respond. Ask him your question and he will give you some good advise. Make sure you have your Seismic truck instruction card with you when you take your trucks apart to replace the springs. If you don't have it I think you can find it on their site or email them and they will send it to you. It basically tells you how to make the adjustments properly.
And by the way, don't let Dankdownhiller fool you...he has been darn fast...I have seen him do it.
Like I said, my next board purchase is a Big Red X with Randal DH 160's and 83mm Flywheels....saving my change now. I only need another $200's in quarters, dimes, and nickels. I am thinking of putting a jar at the local convenience store asking for donations....

Greg Olson: Thanks for the props bro. To me, I feel that God blessed me with another wife to help me raise my daughters, keep me from going insane, and giving me the chance to be a better husband and father.

On 3/9/2005 civilian2b wrote in from United States  (64.12.nnn.nnn)

thanks for all the help

i'd like to check out some seismics, but i've been told by a few people that they get REAL squirrely around 30-35mph...can anyone attest to this? or was that maybe the riders' own spring choice wasn't what it should have been?

side note, what's a good spring/baseplate angle setup for downhill cruising?

thanks again

siesmic springs
On 3/9/2005 greg olsen wrote in from Canada  (209.205.nnn.nnn)

Marion,
What springs do you use in your Seismics? I have some 110 and 180 Seismics with yellow springs and on a rigid board they fall over to full lock with simple ankle rolling. I am used to the progressive spring force of a traditional truck where the more you angulate the higher the tension and you never get close to the maximum movement or tension by doing any kind of turn. Then you know you are working against something. Do I just need stiffer springs? What springs do you recommend on a 110 and what springs on a 180 for my 215lbs for fairly turny but stable at speed longboarding? Thanks. Greg

P.S. And thanks for the reply on the Michael Brooks forum. We have both been through something tough losing a wife to cancer but VERY lucky to find a 2nd great gal to marry.

One More Note On Trucks
On 3/9/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

I run Seismic 180's on my Bozi Mad Bomber II and in my humble opinion they are simply awesome. I have gone at least 40 mph on them and they are incredibly stable, turny, and solid. I own Randalls, Trackers, tricked Chicken Indy's, stock Indy's, Gullwings, and no name trucks. The Seismics are incredible and I would recommend them to anyone setting up a longboard..

Now I guess, that's 3 cents worth.

Recommendations For Civilian2b
On 3/9/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

C2B- I am in agreement with Onedrop on the truck choice. I think if you put those Randall 180's on the Supertanker you will be pleased. The Randall DH's are set up more for boards like the Big Red X or other true speed boards. I have an OTS Wicked Wonder 58" set up with Randall 180's and 76mm 78a Gumballs. This board is a great cruiser and is stable at moderate downhill speeds. At our skate sessions we all bring our entire quiver to share with riders there. This board is very popular because its very stable.
I think the Flashbacks would be a good choice as well. Other choices you could consider would be some of the Gravityboards 73 mm Super G's...they come in a variety of durometers, they have a center hub, and the price is right. Watch the Buy-Sale-Trade Forum here for used wheels..you can sometimes get a great deal on slightly used wheels and try out different kinds. You may find that the locations you are riding in Vegas are better with a softer or harder wheel, taller or shorter, etc.

Just my two cents worth.....and you are right, longboarding is like crack, fairly cheap, plentiful, and gets you JACKED UP BIG TIME! ..

c2b
On 3/8/2005 onedrop wrote in from United States  (68.162.nnn.nnn)

c2b - try some 70mm flashbacks for a nice overall longboarding wheel. i have them in 75a cause my streets are so rough and they are the perfect compromise of feel, grip, and speed. they also give a nice controlled slide when i need it if i'm hauling ass.

i don't think i'd put dh trucks on a liquor store cruiser. i'd go completely opposite and get the turniest trucks i could, especially for a 56" board. try the 180s on there first and if you need more to scoot that bad boy around, go for some seismics or torsion joints.

downhill wheels recommendations
On 3/8/2005 civilian2b wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Greetings Group

I'm new to longboarding/downhill and damn if this isn't more addicting than heroin.

having said that..i need some help

i done went and got me a 5" dregs supertanker and need some setup help.

i've got randal 180's on my other longboard (blank 47" /w slight concave and a kicktail), but i'm thinking on going with the Downhill randals for this puppy.

where i'm moving to (las vegas) i think the longboard/downhill scene is rather dry, so i'm guessing this deck might end up being The Liquor Store Cruiser, but i digress from me point.

ok, so i'm set on the downhill randals, and bearings (all hail Rocket Nation! :) )

so i'm REALLY in the dark about wheels, i'm currently running some 65mm/88a Abec 11 No Skoolz, and i'm diggin' the crap out of em, but i'm looking to upgrade to a nice big sticky wheel in the 70's(mm) can someone square me away with a decent wheel at a decent price??

should i be looking at slalom wheels, maybe?

should i just quit my job and dedicate myself to a regiment of longboarding and all things: Skate?

Thanks
-c2b-

DHB Spot Scouting Pics
On 3/6/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

Local DHBers: I rode both the Ridgewood Development (Rockin Ridge) and the Longbay Development (Longbay) and took a few pics. You can check them out at the DownHill Billies Photobucket site:
http://photobucket.com/albums/v329/DownHillBillies/DHB%20Riding%20Spots/?multi=6&addtype=

Here is the a pic of the main run at Rockin Ridge..2D pics don't show slope very well but this was a fast drop.

Here is the fast section of Longbay..it is much faster than Top Gun at The Spot.

The dog is part of the "street gang" that roams Longbay...friendly sort but easy to get in the way.
Make sure you check out the pic of the bad pavement on the main run at Longbay. It is in the right hand side of the road at the fastest part of the drop...hit it and the dogs will be licking skin off the street for weeks.

JayBird: Thanks for being my "radio" contact (via the mobiles) and on stand by in case I beefed it bad at either Rockin Ridge or Longbay riding by myself. Thanks for letting me check in...at least if I went down you could tell my wife where to find the body so she can collect the policy...no body no moola!

One note, I wouldn't recommend riding Rockin Ridge solo....two days out there and I only saw one car the whole time. If you go down there only the buzzards will find you. Longbay has residents at the top of the Northview side and more houses past that. I saw a few cars coming and going both days. One thing to keep in mind running the fast side (Southview) from the entrance of the development is a blind run for cars coming down the other side until you round the corner. I did meet a car but there was plenty of room on the right hand side..but beware that break in the pavement..when you are at the point you are going very fast.
