Joe,
You're sooo right! Marion has done a grand job of bringing that fold of Billys together!! The stoke is Grand, the learning curve steep, and the south will rise!! Lenny and I were there for the 1st one as well, and some of these guys ripped already, but they rip even better now and some that were just learning have gained by leaps and bounds!! Ben B went this time and between Lenny/Ben and myself we took 30 decks and offered them to loan (for the day) some folk were afraid to try other's decks...Some didn't want to return them heh heh..
You gotta get down there!! The asphalt is like butta with little grains of salt GRIPPY SMOOTH one warning tho...the teas too sweet (but the bud aint)
Hats of to Marion and the ripper Grippers of the NCDHB
Enjoy,
Dave G

Thanks for the kind words Joe. Coming from someone as well liked and respected by the skating community as yourself means a great deal. The credit goes to the whole DHB crew because the core group that started are the one's driving the train down the track...I just try to be an organizer. Those boys are just pumped about it all, downhill, slalom (especially Super G which is going to feature prominently at the next jam), and any form of skating they try. All the credit should go to the local boys who help put this thing together!

God Bless you guys
On 3/28/2005 Joe I wrote in from United States  (63.87.nnn.nnn)

You guys look beautiful.

I'm amazed at the job you've done Marion to build the scene in NC. 30 skaters giving slalom a try, most of them for the first time. I barely know you, but I couldn't be prouder of you.

This is what skateboarding is all about for me. Guys like Marion Karr, Eddy Martinez, Rick Stanziale, Ricky Byrd, TK and Tway are my heroes. Sure there is always an appeal to a solitary moonlight carve down a hill, but I'm envious of the good company in the picture below. It's gratifying to struggle to clean a course and finally get it. It's most gratifying when you can share that stoke with others that are trying the same thing.

Keep up the great work guys. You need to find a spot for a proper, but low key race. Do it during our snow season and we'll show up.

Joe

DHB Jam Awards Post 1
On 3/27/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

Dudes and Dudettes,
Talking about having a bad case of the Supernova Stoked To the Max Syndrome? You guys all rocked yesterday at the DownHill Billies Skate Jam II at The Spot in Troutman/Statesville, North Carolina! Thank you all for coming out, jamming, being supportive, and sharing the Good Vibes of the DHB Crew! I have decided instead of writing a long boring review for all of you about the event I thought I would leave that up to Y’all. Instead, I have decided to announce the 1st Ever NCL’s DownHill Billies Awards. The reciepients are (in no particular order):

D-Holt aka DHB Hill Killer: MOST VALUABLE DOWNHILL BILLY
Even though he is side-lined for awhile with his busted knee, D-Holt whet over and beyond the call of duty getting the logo shirts screen printed and selling them at the jam. Along with his wife Kerri, D-Holt manned the table, collected names and addresses, sold the DHB tee shirts, and managed Master Control at the bottom of the hill.
(To be available for order by the end of the week to all our friends out there in skate land who want to be a DHB’er or at least look like one! Watch the Buy/Sale/Trade Forum on Thursday of this week for details and pictures of both designs (new one to be debuted at that time ) and the style choices to be available in this limited first batch of DHB Logo Wear…if you can’t wait that long send me an email for details).
Thank you for all of your work, Dude.

Holly: MOST IMPROVED SKATER
At the first jam, Holly was a newbie to skateboarding and longboarding but bombed and carved the hills with the best of them. Yesterday, she took her skating to a new level and was killing some serious slides at speed at the bottom of Top Gun. You rocked Dudette!

Justin: BEST SAVE OF THE DAY
Justin, as always, is a favorite amongst the DHB’s because he shares the stoke to the max, skates with style, and just is fun to be around. Yesterday, he diffused what could have been a very sticky situation when one of the Developers of the housing development drove in at the top and demonstrated some attitude. In perfect Justin style, Justin calmed things down and got the owner to chill. It was a minor incident that went mostly unnoticed, yet, could have ended ugly had he handled it differently. Thanks Justin, for the BEST SAVE OF THE DAY! Talks the talk and walks the walk he does!

Shannon aka Flea, SST, and Billy Stick: KILLER SHREADER OF THE DAY
This bro rips everything he rides so we shouldn’t have been too shocked when he showed up yesterday with his “secret weapon” known as the Switchblade Billy Stick. This board was a cut down narrow stick of a board with narrow trucks, small wheels, stock trucks with a kicknose/kicktail, short wheel base, small trucks, and small wheels and yet SST shredded the place up, bombing Top Gun, running the Super G slalom course at speed clean, or just killing manuels, ollies, front manuels, and any darn thing else he put his mind to attempt. I can some it up simply when I say SST WENT OFF!!!!

Evan: FLIRTING WITH DISASTER AWARD
Not to be out done by his brother, Evan also showed up at the jam with his new weapon, another cut down, short wheel base switchblade of a board. Evan road it so hard the small wheels actually melted on the bearings and basically came apart! He then slammed some Kryptonics red 65 mm’s on it and tore it up. He road right on the edge of disaster all day slamming a couple of times hard and going for it on every run. As Molly Hatchett said it best, you were Flirtin’ With Disaster! Glad you came out and shared the Stoke!

DHB Jam Awards Post 2
On 3/27/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

(continued from post above)
Ben Barkey: BEST SLALOM RIDER OF THE DAY
New daddy Mr. Ben rolled into for the jam and proceeded to wiggle the place to death. Ben was the only rider that completely cleaned the incredibly tough (to us) hybrid set by Wesley T. Ben, then proceeded to smoke the Super G we set up on Top Gun on two or three different boards. Thanks for coming out and killing it. Glad to have you part of the DHB’s.

Jay Bird: BIGGEST GRIN OF THE DAY and PARTY HOST
Jay Bird is always one cool cat but yesterday he took being part of the vibe that was permeating the DHB crew and everyone there to a new level. JB rolled, bombed, and carved all day wearing this big ol’ grin on his face all day! JB, along with his lady Jill, fueled the stoke further by inviting the crew into their home for a post jam party.
Thanks Bro and pass on to Jill the same!

Dave G: THE STOKE MASTER GENERAL AWARD
This award will always goes to the DHB’er who demonstrates what this is all about the most…the DHB Crew is about sharing the love for our sport, fueling the other DHB’s stoke, and just being one cool dude or dudette. The first awarding of the Stoke Master General Award could go to no one but Dave G, the West Virginia Wild Man of the River!
Dave, thank you for being a part of the DHB’s. You’re the Man Bro!

Lenny Poage: INSPIRATION AWARD
A very close runner-up in the running for the Stoke Master General Award is the big man, Lenny P from the land of the Mothman. Lenny receives the Inspiration Award.
Ever been around someone whose deep enthusiasm in what they do just spills out of them like water over a damn during rainy season? That is my description of Mr. Lenny. I feed off of his vibe every time I am around him. He is an energy, even though he is in Ohio, that is a deep part of what the DHB confederation is all about! Lenny, thanks for shredding, ripping, and spreading the Vibe!

Bandy aka Lil Shane, Eric aka Little E, and Rookie: DHB OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD
Not only do these three guys all tear up the longboarding, bombing and carving with unique style, they are all part of the backbone of the start-up of the DHB organization and without there hard work and support this event and the DHB crew would not be as good as it was/is. All three spent several hours of their own time helping get the shirts printed, the event planned, and pulled off with out a hitch. Part of the Executive Steering Committee of the DHB’s, these three are collectively The bomb! Thank you so much for all you do for the crew!

Jayson, Steve O aka Lazer Steve: BRINGING SOMETHING NEW TO THE TABLE AWARD
The DHB’s is not a longboarding organization. It is not a slalom organization. It is not a carving, street, pool, whatever organization. The DHB’s are about skateboarding in whatever form you choose. Both these boys are as fast or faster then any the other riders on the hill. Jayson also was killing the Super G. They win the “Bringing Something New To The Table” Award for rolling out the electric skateboard for a big demo with the gang. Everyone that road that monster was stoked. Thanks for mixing it up dudes and for being a big part of the skate jams!

DHB Jam Awards Post 3
On 3/27/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

(continued from post above)
Wesley Tucker: SLALOM PROFESSOR AWARD
The South Cacalacki slalom guro, Wes T brought his knowledge and support to the newbie slalom efforts of the DHB crew setting the hybrid and talking about all thinks slalom to anyone with a question at the jam. Thanks again for all of the work and participation with the session. Wesley also shared his equipment with a bunch of riders and that helped many riders try a slalom board for the first time. Just NO KICK TURNING PLEASE! (grinning)

Gary Saenz: SMOOTH MOVE OF THE DAY AWARD
Now this is what a call a smooth move. Gary joined us for the jam traveling from his home in Lynchburg via Winston Salem where his fiancé lives. Along with bringing her he also invited his “soon-to-be mother-in-law” to the jam. This was clearly the “Smooth Move of the Day” because the mom-in-law-to-be had a great time and even bought a DownHill Billies Shirt! Talk about setting the table for future support from her and his wife for his skating habit!
Gary, thanks for coming and being a part of the DHB’s!

Scott and Kristy: SHUTTLE DRIVER(S) OF THE JAM AWARD
Scott came out a few months ago sporting vintage gear including Rector pads and had just got back into riding. He was so stoked with the experience that he came with his beautiful wife Kristy to the jam and stayed all day, skating, chillin, and driving the Shuttle Truck to the top run after run for the downhillers. Kristy also drove a great deal and helped out. Thank you both so much for sharing. All of the riders appreciated you hauling us up to the top over and over and over again! You guys rock! Thank you!

Mark Nix: BLENDER AWARD
What is he, a longboarder, a short boarder, a street skater, a bombing fool? Dudes, Mark’s a mix of it all! Bringing his snowboard style blended with his rail slides (compliments of the mobile rail he brought to the jam), funky slides, and killer bombs, Mark is clearly The Blender of the Day winner for sure! He came a close second to winning the Grin of the Day Award because this dude does everything with this big ass smile on his face! Mark, thanks for coming and being such a force at the jam.

Jerry aka Surfer Jer, Charlotte Longboarder: NEWBIE TO THE CREW AWARD
Dude sees our postings about the jam on the forum and shows up board, gear, and Super 8mm old school movie camera in hand and road all day. Jer made run after run shooting footage, getting to know the other DHBer’s, and joining in on the fun. Thanks for coming in from the big city for the jam!

Thank you again goes out to everyone who showed up the jam, helped plan it, worked hard to pull it off, and just help the collective fueling of the stoke! Thank you all so much!

A special shout out goes to all of the spectators, family and friends that came out to watch the happenings, support the riders, and just enjoy the day. Go by Delany’s and tell the owner you were glad he brought his son and his friends out to the jam. Tell all of the girlfriends and wives a special thanks and all of the family members who spent the day with us! They Rock!

For those you out there that couldn’t make it to this DHB stay tuned for information regarding the DHB JAM III!

I have some really good digital video , dig. pics. thanks to everyone ror buying tee-shirts to support the cause and spread the disease. EXTRA THANKS TO THE CHARTER MEMBERS. Shirt sales were good considering how many people were there. We made enough cash to put a decent chunk towards this years web site expenses. Which should BE up in about 10 days.but we still need grass roots sales more so from the local crew but any of the dhb members would be appreciated. So you guys give me a call if you think you can move some shirts. D.Holt (704) 437-2913. I think we can get one jam in at that spot. Anyway it was great to hang out with every one again. Gray skies are gonna clear up,
Put on a happy face;
Brush off the clouds and cheer up,
Put on a happy face.
Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy,
It's not your style;
You'll look so good that you'll be glad
Ya' decide to smile!
Pick out a pleasant outlook,
Stick out that noble chin;
Wipe off that "full of doubt" look,
Slap on a happy grin!
And spread sunshine all over the place,
Just put on a happy face!
Put on a happy face
Put on a happy face
And if you're feeling cross and bitterish
Don't sit and whine
Think of banana split and licorice
And you'll feel fine
I knew a girl so glooming
She'd never laugh or sing
She wouldn't listen to me
Now she's a mean old thing
So spread sunshine all over the place
Just put on a happy face
So, put on a happy face.
