MK brought it to Athens. His first slalom race was a MOFO. Trade St. is a top ten hill. We don't get too much bigger than that. Run after run MK went balls out, looking better every run.
Was he scared. Hell, I hope so. But he put down respectable times, at his first race, with an intimidating field of world champions watching.
Obviously marion can organize. He gets a lot of respect from all of us for building the scene in NC, but who knew he could skate like that.
Good for you man. Proud to be your friend,
Joe

The Downhill Billies Longboard/Slalom/Sliding/Streetstyle Skateboarders will session Saturday May 14th at Hobby Park in Winston Salem starting as close as possible to 11:00 AM. Directions to the park are:
*************************** Take Exit 189 on I-40. (The Mall exit.) Take South Stratford Road SOUTH. Go to the intersection with West Clemmonsville Road and turn LEFT. Go about 2.5 miles and Hobby Park is on your left. It's only marked with a small brown sign and what looks like a driveway going straight up a hill. Watch closely or you'll miss it. Once in the park, drive straight ahead and you'll see the shelter. We park around the shelter and walk over to the hill about 50 yards away.
***************************
The event will be an informal session of downhilling and slalom on the most outrageous hill we have yet to find in the Southeast.
WE ASK ONE THING: PLEASE RESPOND HERE IF YOU INTEND TO COME TO THE SESSION! Right next to the hill is a really nice picnic shelter and grill. We are planning on firing up that grill and feeding everyone who shows.
Bring whatever you want, but there will be plenty of grub for everyone IF we get a good count of all who want to attend. Hot, Dogs, hamburgers and all the fixins' are on the menu. We'll get started with the fire around 12:30 and with a little luck start dishing it up around 1:00.
WATCH THE WEATHER!!
Be there or be elsewhere!!

Angled risers

The rule of thumb is that risers play with the angles and allow you to turn more sharply without biting. It's great for carving it up. I've not noticed a loss of stability, though I think it's more of a speedboarding thing to angle them in to maintain more stability at higher speeds. Hope that helps.

Need Info - Ramped Risers & Stability

Hey,
Can someone tell me what's up with ramped risers. I realize they change the angle of the truck's axle, but how does it effect high-speed stability with a standard design truck and flat deck? Or are they just used to re-align the trucks on what I would call a "drop-deck". Any info appreciated.
Thanks!

Boulevard

WT, yes the Boulevard is completely flat, and follows the river. It is four lanes wide. Last year the city shut two lanes down for about a mile every Sunday from 1 to 5 from May 31 to around Sept 18, so there is plenty of room to set up a slalom course. The boulevard is shut down to promote, running, biking, skateboarding, and roller blades. I don't think they will have a problem with us setting up 100 cones but I need to ask them. I mean they close it down to promote fun activities so they shouldn't have a problem. Last year the pavement was super smooth so I assume it is still in excellent condition, I will check that also.

Marc,
I just read your post again and see where you describe it as flat. Don't know HOW I missed that the first time.
Is the boulevard only two lanes? I thought it was four? Or do they close two and leave two open for traffic?

Are we referring to Kanawha Boulevard?

Marc,
Isn't the boulevard FLAT? I mean like flat from Daniel Boone Park to Elk River? I'm not criticizing or saying a session there is no go, but didn't want anyone to think it's some sort of fabulous downhill venue. Is there any grade at all anywhere up or down the levee? I can't remember any.
For those of you not familiar with Kanawha Boulevard, it's four lanes wide (with maybe a suicide lane in the middle - I can't remember) and runs the length of Charleston with the City on one side and the Kanawha River on the other.
It could be, though, an incredible spot for a 100-cone challenge. If the surface is new butter black aspalt, I could see some serious pumping somewhere on the street.

Hopefully the Boulevard will be closed here in Charleston WV on Sundays from 1 to 5 from May 31 to Sep 18th. The Boulevard has nearly new pavement (last year). It is completely flat but both lanes are blocked off. If the city decides to block it off this year, hopefully all the Downhill Billies can come in for a sk8jam. Since the boulevard is on the river and downtown, there is plenty of nightlife (lots of bars) and plenty of Hotels.. Downtown is also great for street skating/longboarding. Hopefully the city will block it off again this year. I will keep you posted.

Dudes and dudettes, Thanks for all of the good vibes you sent my way! Yesterday was a blast A great time was had by all for sure. I posted a longer post on the DownHill Billies website with more detail if you want to check it out.
Ben, Dave G, Lenny, Jbird, Dholt, and everyone: Thanks for the props.
I learned a great deal yesterday and now know how I have to improve. Ben, you are right, when you see the dude currently ranked 1st in the World in slalom, Mollica, the reigning World Overall Champ, Jason Mitchell, the reigning Tight Slalom Chap, Richie Carassco (which I had to follow on every run), the reigning Cyber Slalom Champ, Michael Dong, plus, Gary Fluitt, Noah, Keith Hollien, Chris Barker, etc etc etc in the field that you are racing against it can be pretty intimidating. The Brown Bomber Richie did me a favor though..he DQ'ed on the first cone of his first run and that made me relax a bit. I had been running the course clean in practice so I knew I would be able to get a time.
Lenny: I know you are going to kill at the Gathering and fuel the stoke of the DHB further. Drop Dholt an email and lets figure out how to get you a few shirts to take with you. Wish I could get up there. Tell everyone that I met how much I appreciate their support and kindness.
I am going to be off the board for several days now that I am back catching up with work and family stuff but will try to ride with you guys one night late this week. I am jonesing for some night carving.

Hey, I ran into...let me re-phrase that....I skated w/ some DHBs at Lansdowne the other day...I think it was Justin and Holly and 1 or 2 other guys...Justin's(?) folks live in the next town away from me....it's a small world after all. Anyways, they were all ripping some different lines at the Downer and we tried to convert some kickflippers over to trucks that turn and boards that are twice as long as theirs...they all loved it...even 315 lb Lansdowne local Danny....anybody got any size 13 shoes that he can have?...this young kid rips plus I've known him since he rode just a Bigwheel at Lansdowne...the guy's toes are sticking out from his shoes and he insists on riding sockless in his 'holy' shoes.

Dudes, The movie "The Lords of Dogtown" comes out June 3rd and will be shown at the new local movie plex here in Statesville. I thought maybe as a group we could buy a block of tickets for the first weekend and go as a group, family, younguns, friends, and whatever. Afterwards we can have a DownHill Billies impromptu skate session either at the Spot or downtown or both! Let me know if you are interested and I will start getting the dates and movie times together. We could even have a Lords of Dogtown Party at my house before or after (got to run that past the boss) or a Lords of Dogtown Party in the Alley...let me know you guys are down and then we can plan it.
Check out the Lords of Dogtown Forum for more info.

Just a quick update for y'all out there in skate land...The DHB site now has the tee shirt sales available in the fund raising section of the site. Check it out. The site and the DHB gets all of its funding through these sales so if you are so inclined please order a shirt or two!
The long term goal of the DownHill Billies is to be in a position to sponsor skating events that not only are fun and exciting but also brings more people into our sport. Thank you to all of you who have already contributed through your efforts and shirt purchases. We also hope to sponsor our slalom racers at some point by assisting them on entry fees. We also have discussed buying used/new boards that we can loan to newbies to fuel their stoke as well.
The DownHill Billies are non-profit and 100% of the proceeds minus our cost go directly to supporting the site and the organization.
Thank you all for the good vibes, hits on our websites, and support. Make sure you check out our links page as well.
