DownHill Billies Night Patrol
On 5/12/2005 North Carolina Longboarder- DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

REPORT FROM TONIGHT'S NIGHT PATROL: Talk about some awesome riding tonight. SST, The Nixster, Mac T, Barry 911, and myself showed up for Night Patrol duty tonight in and around downtown Statesville and it freakin rocked. We started out killing a run down center street where me and Mac T almost mistimed a light...Thank God for my new Flywheels on the Bozi...carried me through the intersection like a rocket. SST showed up toten a new version of the BillyStix that was so freakin retro-ed out it wasn't funny...Indy Freestyle trucks and I hooked him up with some Cambria slalom wheels that I swear looked old school shape. Those wheels are sticky and fast and SST just killed it all night on that set-up. Mac T was also sporting a new SST creation-the Coffin Cut BillyStix that was just plain sick! After the run down Center we worked our way over to my neighborhood where we took a screamin 5 man long Mulberry to Statesville Senior High on Center street. That run got a little scketchy when Barry went high side on the bank in the parking lot at the bottom of the hill before you get to Center Street and forced SST and myself to make a quick turn out into the road. The Nixster was riding his latest creation- The SnowSkate (and old snowboard full length, ribbed for support, deck taped, an sporting some big oll Avilas! Dude killed on it......After the high school run we worked our way back to town to get our cars. SST had told us about this hill he had noticed in a new neighbor down of of Davie Ave. We all 5 went to hit and man what a smokin ass run that was...it had to be a good 1/2 mile run that was perfect new pavement and screaming fast circling back on itself. It was awesome screaming through the dark while all of the yuppies slept in there new cookie cutter homes with the same cars (fill in your yuppie car of choice). This was one of the best runs I have ever seen in Statesville...fast, smooth, and long...real long...and great because it actually finished you out almost at the point you start...just a walk up a side hill and you were not far from being able to run it again. I squared a manhole cover at high speed but was able to pull it. I am still holding my breath so my "man parts that rhyme with "talls"" would drop back down. Dudes, this run is incredible. Every DHB locals have got to ride this hill!........ Then we drove over to Mac T's new neighborhood and hit a big hill that had very little lighting and at one point in the run the Nixster, Barry, Mac T, and myself were running shoulder to shoulder to shoulder to shoulder at speed!......... To finish the night SST, Nixster (Mac T and Barry bailded)went back up town where we made the Center Street CVS run, the Clock Tower to Jenkins Cleaners run (one of my favorites), Front Street/ABC store run down past Goodyear, and then the icing on the cake...The New Library run. I am still in awe of watching SST run's down that huge car access ramp up the side of building. They were smooth and killer fast. Nixter and I were hitting it fast too and were able to pull some slides at the bottom. The sickest thing about the Library is that accross the street from the speed run is the place where the sherriff's debuties fill their squad cars up with gas. A county sherriff's deputy actually watched us while pumping gas..man, how things have changed. Thanks to all who came out. If you are a local DHB then you have to come out to a Night Partol status! Hey LENNY!!! We will definitely have to get you involved in a night patrol while you are here! Night Patrol.

Gathering more longboarders
On 5/11/2005 PSR wrote in from United States  (69.161.nnn.nnn)

Marion, one of the 'traditional' venues at The Gatherings has been the G.S. Longboard Race. This year, LBK set the course (I did it last time), and because we had some racers without Long-Wheelbase boards, the Slalom guys were All Over It. Last year,Vlad would've won, but instead got DQ'd, with too short of a board+wheelbase (as double pumping Is faster,if done right),and I tied Aaron Morris for 2nd, using a Comet 40" Dh kicktail, not your 'average' go-fast G.S. deck, but perfect for this hill. So This Year, it was a free-for-all, with big sticks mixing it up with little decks, but Big being still the Dominate Ride. I hope Andy finds us a bigger, faster, wider hill next year so that I can fully Romp on a longer plank(got a 170cm snowbowboard just waiting to get re-shaped into a Monster Super-G Homebuilt!). Why? Because I see the value in bringing Fun, Fast, and Challenging Courses into the mix.
Longboarders are Soulful, laid-back, etc, but everyone Knows Why they ride big boards; Speed and Flow! Put those things to work in a Race Course designed to show off the natural attributes of a Longboard, and, hey, instant Race-Day fun without the hassle of Big Egoes or needing Haybales and an ambulance on stand-by. I've been seeing that Soapbox hill you've been running, and dang it, the cones are always at the bottom?! No, this is not as it should be. Open that pup up, use two lanes, and more of the steep good-flowing gravity! I got hills like that (unfortunately, usually with Cars) all over my back woods, a few that're somewhat bigger, steeper, longer, and even wider. I can't Pay People to come to Vermont, they just can't get 'up this far' or whatever, so I ride 'em for myself. Too damn bad, as these hills are awesome as a playground. When I get down to Gaithersburg, it's nice, and the Vibe is unreal, very, very positive, but I'm still looking for a dang Incline that makes me all itchy inside. I say we need two things to liven up the 'grass roots' end of Slalom : More Big Hills, and more Longboarders coming out to strut their stuff!
BTW, I Snowboard on Rad-Air Tankers, my usual ride is a 172 cm,or 182 cm, and I've had a few 200 cm boards in the quiver for quite awhile. Bigger, faster, Faster Yet, and Bigger are The Way to GO !! Got Speed?

Longboarding @TG5

Plenty of longboards were ridden at this year's TG5 when the shorter slalom boards were not in use. In fact, lbk set a nice GS course Saturday afternoon that I ran my Bozi MadBomber thru: Guys-(1st-me,2ndBrian Parsons,3rdRichmondAnthony)Gals- (1st Jenn, 2nd Ilva)These 2 gals were tied w/the same time until the last run. race was run via a jam format and then on Sunday PSR set a doozy and then proceeded to try to slide one of the long Jam Longboards through the cones. That was sick! Jam Longboard twin CEOs Matt and Mark McMullen came out w/a bunch of demo boards. Youngin McMullen, Eli, ripped some sweet carve lines down the hill on a board that was way taller than he was. Mark and Matt led the longboard freestyle jam that ensued after everyone ran through the cones on the back side of the loop. Myself, Nino, Jenn,Richmond-Anthony,WesE,Ilva, Rob,Adam,PSR,Smallwood and the 2 NOVA Bombers all bombed the hills, attacked the cones, and walked the boards, hung ten(Eli did this best,as did Matt. I want to thank Jam Longboards for coming out Sunday afternoon w/a bunch of demo longboards(I really like the 70-incher and the 80-incher). It was way cool listening to all the old skateboard stories and skating around w/everyone....and to top that off, Ilva bought PSR's longboard cut from a damaged old wood core snowboard...now she's a longboarder! Just growing the sport one person at a time!!

Lenny, you the man for handling the situation at the park. We all want the kids to be more respectful but I have come to the conclusion that it will not happen easily. When you work hard to see a park built for the kids and then to see fights, grafitti, trash and more it is a let down. I happen to see all three at our local park Sunday night and had to give some intimidating looks to stop kids from fighting. Chalk it up to parents are busy and kids are kids. I love unsupervised skateparks and wish folks could behave in anarchy but, especially for kids, it will never totally happen. The important thing is trying to remain a good role model. Lenny, and those like him, are a great asset to the skateboarding community. He models for kids at work and at play and the skateboarding community could use more Lenny's.

Just another reason I am proud to be Down.
Ben.

Park Patrol

So last night my wife, one of our friends, and I went to a local skatepark in my wife's hometown. As sson as we got there, this car load of teenagers arrived with full intent of causing trouble and beating up a skater at the park. I'm pretty laid back, but I was there to skate and not play park police. ANYWAY right when I was padding up, this big kid throws a kid off the ramp and proceeds to try and pummel the kid. There were kids of all ages, families and all that at the park and, given the skating has a semi-bad rep anyway, that wasn't too cool. All said and done, I ended up having to remove a kid from a park 3 hours from my hometown (thank God I can look pretty mean at times).

When I finally got to skating, it was so dark I only got about 3 runs in and... OK, I'm not vibing any city for building a public skatepark, but why would you not go with a company that specializes in building skateparks? The 'crete was way slick (and painted) with ripples and clumps in it. A bad night skating beat s a good night of 'most anything else, but I'm glad to be home and am looking forward to heading south next weekend!

Gathering- Bad News/Good news
On 5/6/2005 Lenny-DHB wrote in from United States  (68.75.nnn.nnn)

Well... the wife and I were talking quite a bit this morning and the combination of her getting over an ear infection, Mothers' Day, and a death in the family of a very good friend, we decided it wasn't in the cards to head to MD this weekend. The deciding point was the fact that we'd be arriving REALLY late tonight and would be driving back to OH REALLY late tomorrow night and it'd make a long long day tomorrow (Since my better half is still on the mend- bad idea). Instead we're visiting our mothers for Mothers' Day.

That brings me to the good news. Since we're seeing the in-laws this weekend, that frees me up for next weekend. Hence, I may be able to make it down to DHB Jam III after all. Drop me an email.

Later,
Lenny- DHB

Well....we're back.

www.texaslongboarder.com version 2.0 is online and ready for fun. It's got a bunch of older stuff up still, but we're adding new stuff almost daily.

Bookmark it and check it out. Our goal is to bring the stoke back to longboarding in Texas (those other states and countries can dig on it too), and by longboards we're talking 40"+ with big ol' wheelbases. If it's littler than that...don't bring it.

We hope to entertain and enlighten, if we don't...We promise to commit heinous acts of self abuse.

Joe I: Dude, you are way too kind bro! To answer your question..heck, yeah I was scared. Going into the gutters of that road to get around those off sets freaked me out but I just kept trying to go faster. My only regret was that the one run out of 5 I DQed on was by far my fastest (it was significantly faster than my best time) and I just relaxed a bit at the bottom and pulled a nose wheelie at about 25 mph+...I learned a great deal on Friday for sure.

As far as organizing the scene down here...it is really pretty easy because the boyz are all busting their ass to make it happen. DHolt, Rookie, JayBird, SST, Lil E, Lil Shane, Mac T, and the rest of the local crew are pouring themselves into the DHB's with the same passion as I have and man its a beautiful thing. One of my main goals for the rest of this year is to make sure they get the recognition they deserve for their efforts.
Wesley Tucker is doing alot a well especially focusing on the Slalom Component of the DHB Crew. He is the driving force behind the organization of the DHB's Slalom/Bombing Jam At Hobby Park on May 14th in Winston Salem. WT has already taught me alot about slalom and I would have not ridden as well as I did in Athens if not for the work we did at Exit 46 (which by the way is as fast or faster than Athens).
Dave G: Thanks for the Props Dude! All the DHB local boys can freakin ride!

Hope to see you all at Hobby Park on the 14th

Man I am up here trying to move heaven and earth to make it to the DHB JAM III. I am in (at least tentatively). Props to MC for sure. I can remember Dave's first race in the rain. The first time I had ever run a skateboard through slalom cones was a week before with Marc. We only had like six or eight cones. My first run, I line up and I hear the announcer " Its a local boy up against the two time Canadian national slalom champion". You know your done but heck it was still fun. There are not many sports were you can show up and compete against professionals. With all skateboarding, riding with those who skate better or even different will only improve your own skating. DHB's rule the longboarding forum! Proud to be Down!
