Plenty of Longboards in the Nutmeg State

While slalom was the main course north-west of Hartford, Connecticut, yesterday...many of the skaters also brought their big planks too. In fact, many LBers were trying slalom for the first time and fun was had by all. Now I don't remember everybody's names but I saw lots of fun being had by everyone in attendance. It was great skating with you all....let's do it again real soon!Longboarding is very much alive in northern Connecticut(so is slalom)!

DHB Hobby Park Shout Outs!
On 5/15/2005 North Carolina Longboarder-DownHill Billies wrote in from United States  (166.82.nnn.nnn)

You have all said so much about the day! It was awesome! Simply awesome! Again, another DHB event goes in the books and my jaws ache from smiling so much! I won't rehash what everyone has already said about the day but here are my shout outs for the weekend (in no particular order):

The Reisdorfs: Talk about a great family! You all were awesome! We loved having you a part of the crew! Hope you will join your fellow DHB's soon! You realize between you two and Jake you have a Greensboro Chapter up and running!

Jake: Dude, you are one of the coolest people I have met in a long time! Thanks for skating with us again on the Hobby Park Hill. You were killing the slides! You are a 1/3 of our Greensboro presence! Man, thanks for sharing your stoke!

Dex: The newest of the new when it comes to the DHB's. Your balls out attack on the hill all day was SICK! Dude you can skate! Street style, bombing, whatever! You fit with this crew! Thanks for sharing your stoke and hooking WT up with one your boards! Thanks for the videos in advance! Stay tuned on the DHB website for updates on next sessions or come on over to Sk8tesville and ride with the local crew!

WT: Dude, thanks for the cooking, buying the food, leaf blowing and setting up the coarse, and the stoke fueling! I think we have found our venue for the DHB's to put on a race on the East Coast that is going to be spectacular!

DHOLT: Thanks for all of the filming you did yesterday and putting together a video. In a couple of weeks when I am back to getting some skate time you are going to have to teach me how to film so I can help with those efforts. You were killing the slalom...chalk up another convert!

J BIRD: Dude, you were oozing stoke for all there at the jam! Thanks for all of the stuff you do to help support this crew! Rock on bro! You were bombing faster than I have ever seen you skate!

JAYSON: Dude you were freakin flying down that hill either straight of through the cones! You were killing it! Thanks for coming out. You are a core member of the crew!

STEVEO: I wasn't going to do "awards" for this session but I have to give you the "Flirting with Disaster Award" for your speed run that spit you off of the end of the run off, your 3 foot wide speed wobbles, or your superman over the wall into the woods! Glad you are ok...dude, you were just simply an off the chain going for it full tilt skater dude! You always got the stoke going to make us all what to push it hard! You rock.

Ben Barkey: Dude, you are a true DHB if there ever was one! It was great to get to meet your lovely wife and that awesome little boy! I know you count your blessings everyday for that awesome pair! You were as always skating the crap out of it. Sorry we didn't really get to hang too much. Please tell your wife how much we enjoyed her joining us!

Marc Fuentes: Bro, it was great to finally meet you and skate. Because of the amount of time we had I didn't get to talk to you much. Hope we can also hang more at the next event. Thanks for being such a part of this growing deal! The DHB's are going to grow and grow with guys like you throwing fuel on the fire! The pictures that you posted were cool. Let us know if you have any more.

Gary Saenz: Dude, I know your day kind of got bummed out but I was glad you were there! Thanks for the hook ups on the boards and helmets you hooked the boys down here up with. Look forward to riding with you again real soon....but give me your wallet first for safe keeping! (just joking)

Thanks to everyone that hung with the bunch and brought food. I know we all missed the rest of our crew: Dave G, SST T, Rookie, Mac T, Bandy, Lil E, Barry,Utah Trish, Beth, Justin and Holly (miss you guys) and everyone else that is a part of the DHB's!

It was an incredible day! I am very proud to be a part of this group of people.

Downill Billies Downhill Speeds
On 5/15/2005 WT wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

The Downhill Billies had a great session of slaloming, bombing, sliding and speed runs yesterday on the Hobby Park Hill in Winston Salem North Carolina.

Just for fun, we did a "speed trap" and got some unofficial times. This isn't in anyway exact as we didn't have a timer, just a stop watch. It's still, though, a good indication of both the speeds these skaters were hitting and the potential for this hill.

This was very simple: two lines 88 feet apart (1/60th of a mile) and do an elapsed time through the trap. Again, this was all "manual" with a stop watch at the bottom and a hand signal for the start at the top, so let's not get carried away with nit-picking the particulars:

1. Marion Karr (elapsed time 1.4 seconds) = 42 mph
2. Steve-O (elapsed time 1.54 seconds) = 38.96mph
3. Jason (elapsed time 1.55 seconds) = 38.77 mph
4. Dex (elapsed time 1.56 seconds) = 38.46 mph

And Marc F. got a 1.8 seconds butt boarding for a speed of 33.33 mph.

***********

Again, this isn't an exact thing and lots of margin of error. Still, though, even if time were added to all the times to make up for human error, these guys were still hitting better than 35 mph just doing stand up on longboards.

P.S. And somebody tell "66" Stanziale that Marion hit 40 MPH WITHOUT getting towed in with a pick up truck!

BTW, DHolt, enjoy your new air-conditioned shorts! I'm not sure who gets the "slam of the day" award because there were some doozies, but that's among the top!

Just got in safe and sound from NC. Man! As always, an awesome time! Tons of familiar faces and some new additions to the crew fueled the stoke!
Y'all are family, bros! Thanks for a great time!

Gary, Marion told me you found your wallet. I'm stoked! It's a bummer that you had to split early, but I'd have done the same thing!

NCL and family. Thanks for all the stoke and hospitality. As always, I have to return the favor (and take you to Tudor's Biscuit World).

DHolt and NCL, thanks for hipping me to my first Night Patrol.

All the DHB Crew- each time I visit it gets harder to leave. I'm already stoked on the next jam! Just tell me when and where and I'm there!

Dave G, we missed you, bro!

Marc and Ben, keep me posted on the events in C-ton (and the Rt. 460 Ditch) We have to hook up for a session soon!

Wes T- thanks for the seminar on cone-setting. We finally got it dialed and it was a blast!

Dank, Steve-o, and J-Bird, y'all were killing it with MAD speed (and Steve-o was killing himself with superman arial tactics and hillside slides!).

While I'm sure there are other comments I originally intended to make, the long drives are taking their toll and my mind is close to mush!

Night all!

My mellow carve, 'crete surfing hiney could barely keep up (and in many cases I didn't keep up. LOL). Don't get me started about the big red truck incident!! Nonetheless it was a blast and a great warm-up sesh for Hobby Hill tomorrow!

BTW, Ben and Marc, I'm heading back tomorrow after the sesh. How 'bout a northbound caravan?

Hey Marion,
I live in DC but I work for an airline, so I fly free. I was actually going to hit Paris on Monday to film the Radikal maniacs, but the idea of flying 8 hours to stand in the rain doesn't sound too appealing. Going to NY instead, where it's sunny and the girls are just as cute!

I love to compete but it's hard to line up the days for competitions. It would be nice to hit Maryhill and Indian School this year, but they're both bad weekends for me. So I figure I'll try and hit them sometime this summer and just ride with the locals, which is as cool as any competition. The Top Challenge race in Montreal is one of my favorites, but nothing beats going out with the KebbeK crew at night and hitting their spots.

Riding with the DHB's is definitely on the list.

That slide comment was a joke directed at WT, who's a pro at receiving them and slinging them back. If you just ride down the driveway and fall in the grass, it's better than not skating at all. And any guy that drives 8 hours each way for a few hours slaloming, is as sick in the head as any downhiller or gnarly pool guy, even if he is riding "cockroach" style!!!

I'd like to come down and do some night runs w/ the DHB's. How far are you guys from GSO?? Do you guys ride during the week??

Eric, I agree that the hill is perfect in the sense that it could be set in so many different configurations that we could hosts a variety of slalom disciplines and levels of ability on it. I am sent off for information about the insurance. Several people have sent me information about putting on a race, and I have already got a commitment from Keith Hollien, the boys in Ga, Tway, and a variety of others to come if we have a race. With the DHB's involved there will be something for the longboarders amongst us for sure. The majority of the members of this organization are longboarders first.

Where in Vermont...
On 5/12/2005 PSR wrote in from United States  (69.161.nnn.nnn)

Anthony, I'm currently in Arlington, south-west end of things. It's a nice quaint town (former home of Norman Rockwell),and near some nice Ski-area roads (Stratton, Mt. Snow, Haystack) that have good tar and fun pitches to them. Gotta love SkiCondo accesses! I'll be moving come July, back to the Eastern side, about mid-way up, near Springfield. Again, there's no lack of good hills nearby, and one of my faves is Okemo, as the 'Mountain Road' ski trail actually IS a Road in the summer! There's so many good spots in Vermont, it's silly. I have a Topographical Map (Delorme, great maps) that's just full of notes, "new tar-8/04" or "Sick,Steep,Dogs" are notable ones that come to mind. That map is tattered, but still usually in the car, right next to the boards. I often just go 'get lost', and find crazy cool roads that way. It helps having lived up here most of my life, too, but many of the good spots from my youth are just way too busy with cars nowadays. Too many Flatlanders moved up here! Oh well, they at least get new tar to their lovely hillside condos, so it's a worthwhile tradeoff.

Wes, I totally agree with you on a 'non Gilmourian' approach to introducing Slalom, especially to hardcore longboarders. That's why I like the G.S. at the Gathering, as that hill is not too wild, and has a smooth runout, too. However, a wider, steeper, smoother hill is what I'd love to see be found and included in The Gathering.
The note about NC's Soapbox hill not being fully used, well, I'd likely not 'wiggle' down it, but rather would set one flowing-fast G.S. on it. Longboards usually go faster than Slalom boards,no? Keep in mind that the Super-G at Morro Bay had a 'tight start' just to keep the size of boards down, and it was a 39 mph hill (w/cones in the way). I ran my Bozi 36", and it was a bit big for the top, and a bit squirrelly at the bottom, just right in-between. With a hill like that Soapbox, heck, my 36" would be at optimum speed in 2-3 cones! The bigger boards I have [40"+] would be right at home on it. I particularly like the runout, and the tar quality looks to be excellent. That's exactly the kind of hill you want, one that can challenge anyone, just by how you set the course!

SST, Nix, and myself have an idea about our next video! Boys, when you see SST's run at the new Library you are all going to be blown away. SST storms this monster of a parking lot ramp and parking lot on his signature BillStix...What's a Billy Stix or Billy Stick you ask? Only a soon to be a MUST HAVE when it comes to urban assault riding. ..yes, that is what SST's freakin BillyStix (sp?) is ...It is an Urban Assault Skateboard!

Dang! I love this sport!

Let's hook up and hit some big stuff

WT, you're right. More kids should try slalom. Now if we could get more of the slalomers to go sliding on a Landyachtz......

Hobby Park Course Setting
On 5/12/2005 WT wrote in from United States  (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Eric,

It's hard to convey grade and such through photographs, but here's something to consider: if you look at my pictures of Hobby Park and where we started the course, that part of the hill is already much steeper than the Park and Ride and maybe as steep as the back hill at Cardinal, only much longer and straight.

Like I told you Sunday at the Gathering, the hill at Hobby Park is graduated. It is not a steady grade from top to bottom. So as you go up it gets steeper. Eventually we'll be running the whole hill flat out with Avilas on monster boards, but there's no need now setting courses that are so fast and difficult that a newbie would just shrug it off and go back to carving and sliding his Landyachtz. We are trying to get people INTERESTED in running cones. That means setting courses where they can run cones. Just a lot of cone spray and cussing only results in skaters giving it up before even trying.

It's safe to say that right now our goal is first get skaters to enjoy the real thrill of slalom and then move on to stoking a racing attitude. Just to put this in perspective, Eric, at the first Downhill Billy Jam, I spoke with maybe 10 or 15 GOOD intense longboarders who had never ridden a board less than 36" long unless it was for kickflipping. Riding an intense slalom board that will wiggle, turn, accelerate and maintain control is a whole new experience for a lot of these skaters. I don't want to see them give up slalom before they try because some Gilmourian Masterpiece on the hill leads them to believe they'll never be competitive.

The courses WILL get more gnarly and will get faster. Let's get a good stoke going first, though, where people look forward to setting cones.

Tway stopped by and road it a couple of weeks ago and it is possible to put cones further up that hill..and we will..but it's 25 mph as soon as you step on the board up high ..and that is no exageration. We are going to skate there this weekend so I am sure we will play around with some set ups.
Lenny: Check your email..you are good to go for the spare bedroom this weekend..no problem.

Its 3:15 am and I am finally calm enough to go to sleep....tonight's night patrol session got me totally jacked up!!!!
