A few months ago I saw a cop I know talking to a kid on a skateboard when I was on my daily "walk" (read: smoke-break) during lunch. It is the same cop who's on duty in my school so I asked him if he stopped the kid for skating. He hadn't. He told me that he THOUGHT skating on the sidewalks is illegal, but (reading between the lines and using common sense) the only time they have to use that is when there's another situation in conjunction with the skating: i.e. destruction of property, yelling profanity, etc. I've skated past many cops here when cruising around and normally get a smile and a wave.

Chris B /Arab, are showing their knowledge and tact when dealing with a municipality. Some people think it's "their right" to do what they want, where they want, and when they want! No matter the cost or disturbance and risk to others! Get a grip..You, nor anyone else has the right to endanger or deface any property (being real or personal). Folks don't Settle shop or frequent areas that run amuck w/ disrespectful non-responsible doofuses that hinder and endanger the enjoyment for all! Would you think it were right for some 70 year olds (or anyone else for that matter) to decide that they wanted to take a "stroll" w/ their dogs or kids in a skatepark?? My town of Fayetteville has also a "no skateboarding" law that I worked hard to get them to "overlook" 1 day a year. It might be "overlooked" all together if skaters would be responsible for their actions, and quit trashing everything that appears to have been put there for distruction!! I know....I'm an old fahrt, I did stupid things in life (still do) But I pay for my mistakes and poor judgement, no body else should have to!
Enjoy, Dave G

The anti skateboarding law in Huntington Beach was put in place to protect the city and its community of businesses against property damage and public nuisence, With the law in place it gives the authorites the power to cite those that are breaking laws, Cite What? The damaging of public and private property.
Skateboarding is not a crime, Tresspassing, Vandalism and being a nuisance is.
Tresspassing onto private property is illegal, when skateboarders think it is their right to grind the handrail or set up cones on my business and deface my property, that is now illegal, it was illegal before the law was put in place but the law was not specific enough and did not give the authorities the right to cite the skaters, now it does.
When skateboarders are grinding a handrail in front of a high rise business complex and doing damage to the rail and endangering the people that have to work there, that is illegal, What Damage? think about how much it cost to install that handrail? Now it is gouged and has metal splinters that could injure somebody that needs to use it to get up the stairs, or maybe now the hand rail has come loose from its foundation and will no longer serve its intended purpose.
As for any other type of skateboarding, slalom, carving, cruising etc, If you think it is your right to go play in a parking lot or parking structure you are wrong. Cities and busineses dont need the liability of somebody that could get hurt partaking in activity that is dangerous and could injure somebody on their property, whether it be the skateboarder or somebody that works at the business.
This country is SUE Happy, It is municipalities and businesses right to protect their interest. Remember the lady that got burned by Mcdonalds coffee? Yes people sue for everything nowadays.
One of the complaints that was heard by the city was, Some older lady was walking down main st, some skateboarder came charging down the sidewalk and scared the old lady, she stepped to one side to get out of the way, she stepped into a muddy planter and fell into the street and broke her wrist, Lucky for the city, she didint sue them, but it did make them think that maybe they should do something to curtail this from happening again, and should it happen the liability will not be put on them or business owners.
I have no problem with the laws, they are only enforced when need be, and when somebody is defaceing, damaging or being a public nuisance, then they are enforced. this doesnt just go for Skateboarders, it applies to Bladders, Scooters and Bicyclist and anybody else that breaks the laws.
For near 40 years now, I have been told not to skate here or there, I have no problem being told I cant skate somewhere, I respect somebodies property whether it be public or private.
My Motto has always been:
"Skateboarding is not a Crime Tresspassing is Hope a fence and skate today"
If I get caught, thats my fault and I must pay the consequences, whether it be a ticket, jail time or the loss of my board.

erm, thanks for assuming i'm a dude, dude.
i'm not.
one doesn't learn to exercise the common sense you speak of until one has the chance to first make mistakes...
being able to walk outside, drop my board on the ground, and explore the neighborhood on my skateboard was IT for me, just as it is for kids now...hopping the fences to 'skate THAT thing!' as well...why is it ok to look back fondly on these things, and for some of you, to try to relive them...but it's wrong for the kids today to do these things too? is it because they're younger? is it because they do tricks and skate a style you're not into that makes leaning on the side of anti-skating laws somehow easier for you?
you can't convince me with the rationalizations mr/mrs.Citizens....so don't try. I just hope you're belief in this law works as well for bikes, blades and yuppie baby carriages ( which, btw, are incredibly annoying on sidewalks ). As for slalom not enciting suck ranker in the non-skaters, you don't have to. I've seen you do it amongst yourselves pretty well.
Owch! ;-)

This is a tough one.
While skaters should not be banned from riding their boards, I do think that property destruction is something entirely different. I'm not saying that grinding a curb is vandalisim, I guess it really comes down to where said curb is. If it's in a highly trafficked area, vehicles/pedestrian, the skaters will surely draw more attention to what they are doing. There is also the danger of a collision with a vehicle or pedestrian. But of course it's more fun for skaters to session a curb or bench when they have an audience.
Sometimes as skaters we think just a little too highly of ourselves and our activity. I'm sure the elderly couple who take their daily walk to the local park to sit on the bench and talk or feed the birds, just love having their clothes stained by "curb wax".
Slim, so if we apply your "bench/curb" logic to roads and sidewalks we would have nowhere to skate, except skateparks, wooden ramps and pools.
Snoball, I agree with you regarding "bladers".
I've been skating since 1974 and count the number of my run-ins with the "man" on one hand. Why? Because I chose to skate in either out of the "public eye" or at times when the "public eye" was not present.

Isabelle, you can buy many things "legally" in the US....but you have to be responsible in its use....i dont care if its a car, a gun or a board (items from all sides of the spectrum)....Use it with regards to others and your fine, show disregard and you're not....Ride with care to the people and environment around you and there's no problems, (along Dave G's line), damage public property and buzz the pedestrians and there are problems. This is a situation that pops up from coast to coast. Any litigation is a pain in the butt and i doubt the city councils are getting into this without first receiving complaints from their residents. And Snoball, lay off on the caffeine son, your blood pressures too high...I have nothing against learning in the streets, as a kid i rode them all day everyday, i'm just saying be aware of where your at and what your doing. If there's alot of people-traffic, find a different spot, if you're working on a stunt that's damaging public property, reconsider what your doing...And finally, Slim...on your first point, maybe we should all be mountainboarding then aye?...and on your second, i agree, but that's a whole 'nother story. Did you ever notice that slalomboarders dont raise such anger from the townsfolk?....hmmmm...why do ya suppose that is?? Why dont we ask the folks in Fayetteville.....

and btw, while the java juice is pumping hard here...
I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't learn to skate in parks. I learned in the street. Not all kids have access to parks. Which is beside the point, because I don't think skaters should be forced into parks if they don't like them anyway.
I wonder how many parks Cape May has.

I don't care what they're rationalizations are for banning 'carrying' or 'parking' a skateboard. You'll notice they aren't banning anything related to blading, and they "destroy" property to.
Cape May must be awfully pleasant if the crime is so mild there that the police and old farts city council can rage about this.
And if they're interested in turning skaters into criminals, this is one sure way to do it. Better beef up security in the garages too.
It's a bunch of s#@!e. Period.

Only in the utmost capitalist society can one purchase an item that is illegal to use. How can our industry allow laws that hinder their product use? How idiotic is it that you get fined for riding your skate, when bikers do as they please without repremand? Interesting living in the U.S.A isn't it? For the love of money..........ouch!?

Though I don't participate in the type of street skating likely to cause any property damage, I think Cape May, and you all who see their point, have a warped sense of aesthetics if you see grinds on benches and curbs as "ruining them". These objects are hunks of cement defacing our natural environment. They should never have been brought into existence, are/were never beautiful, and are never worthy of being protected from a few chip marks or wax stains.
But a city has to make money somehow, right? Well how about handing out tickets to wiggas? I'm much more bothered by the stupid white-boy skaters' attempts to appropriate hiphop fashion (in itself becoming a parody of itself these days) than I am any property damage they may be causing. They can hand out tickets to anyone with more than 1/2" of boxer shorts showing, or more than 6" of slack in their jeans between hip and foot, or anyone wearing a huge (non-leather) jacket on a hot day, and to any white kid who is overheard saying to his friends, "what up nigga". Hate the player, not the game. Yeah, that's something I can get behind, ha!

At the risk of getting flamed for posting on this subject again...at least by the tone of the article, it looks like the law is intended to stop the kids who rip up the area, then hold their boards when the cops show up and act like they're just walking around...of course , like any law, it could be carried too far by over zealous cops. Davmo,...well...that kind of blows...but it may be because it's a public street...we're not allowed to set up cones in the street either, thus the college. And Carl...I agree, it's what skating has evolved to...and i think it takes alot of skill to pull off those moves....but it still destroys the property.if i were a store owner and the curbs in front of my shop were chewed up and stained dark brown from waxing,i'd be ticked too. and the kids dont seem to care, they seem proud of it. All they need is copers and they'd save us all the trouble. As for skating when crowds are around.please..when the popsicle sticks are "in abundance" at Vans, they're flying around like scud missles....blast a few wandering boards off a pedestrians ankles and you'll have problems. You're right, the DT boys did damage some turf, but being that i wasnt there all i have to look at is old film...and in those movies, they were always watching out for cops,...who'd arrest them if they were caught...it's what made them such radical, badass skaters.....so that hasnt really changed.....If the kids would've found places with limited crowds and were careful not to destroy what wasnt their's, this wouldnt be an issue....so it takes us back to parks....it's where we skated as kids....where we practiced and where we hung out and made our own culture...that's where they belong...and if the city cant afford to build one, then find one they have to pay to get into...we didnt have free parks as kids and we still managed to raise cash to skate....

I didn't mean to sound "harsh" in my post.. I think the vast majority of us ,on this forum know the difference between right and wrong, and I think in several occasions a simple contact w/ town hall describing the other forms of skating, may get you a good response and understanding of simple cruising and running cones etc.. All too often "a few bad apples spoil the whole bushel" Laws are made to be stretched !!

In reference to the post about skateboarding being illegal in your town the city of Virginia Beach was mentioned.
I live close to Virginia Beach and I can say that skateboarding is illegal on city streets in Virginia Beach. About a month ago my son Aaron and I set up a slalom course on a newly paved road which is a rarely traveled lane and dead ends in a cul-de-sac. It would have been a great place for us to practice since there are not many places we can practice and this lane did have a slight downhill grade which is rare in Virginia Beach. Its pretty flat here! Just after Aaron had set the last cone and we were about to run the course for the first time one of Virginia Beach's finest policemen drove up and as he rolled down his window he was shaking his head side to side while saying "Not today, Not tomorrow, Not ever!" So we were shut down before we even got started.
I can understand the frustration that business and property owner have with all the kick flipper kids grinding all over the place. But whats really bad is in Virginia Beach it doens't matter what kind of a skateboarder you are. If the police want to they will hassle you. Don't even try Longboarding on the boardwalk at the oceanfront in Virginia Beach. Like I have always said about Virginia Beach is that they need to put up a really big sign for locals and tourists to see, it would read in really big bold letters "NO!!!"

At the very end of the news article:
This ban, which won preliminary approval Monday and faces a final vote Dec. 16, was sought by police frustrated by skateboarders who play on city-owned land but thwart prosecution by picking up their boards when they see police coming.
"It's not intended that anyone we see carrying a skateboard will be stopped or have it confiscated," said City Administrator Luciano V. Corea Jr. "It's for when we see someone skateboarding in a prohibited place."

STUPID LAWS
Cape May Moves To Outlaw Possession Of Skateboards
"The measure (making it illegal to possess, park or carry a skateboard), which would make violations punishable by up to $100 in fines and confiscation of the skateboard, may be the first anywhere to ban mere possession of one."
You would think the local authorities would have more important law enforcement work to deal with than kids merely possessing/carrying skateboards. Why make criminals out of kids that are just full of energy? Come on Cape May, build them a quality skatepark out of concrete.
If they pass that idiotic law in Cape May,NJ we should organize a non-violent protest with about a 100 plus skateboarders carrying cheap bunk (junk) boards and let them confiscate those boards. Can you see the front page of the Cape May Gazette, "Cape Invaded With Hoodlum Skateboarders Carrying Toys-R-Us Skateboards".
Every beach town I have lived in or been to, people skateboard not only to ollie off ledges but to also just to get around on longboards. Could you imagine Huntington Beach outlawing possessing skateboards? Virginia Beach? Your Beach? Your Town?
Chris B is right on point, the kids do bring it on themselves but the hell if I would stand for somebody telling me I can't own a skateboard. It's my right to own or possess a skateboard and to use it.
I can see the Cape May Investigative McCarthy Style Hearings now:
CHAIRMAN: Ok, we have information you carry a skateboard in town.
ALLEGED SKATEBOARDER: Uh, I've been known to have my board with me.
CHAIRMAN: So you admit the crime do ya? Give the names of others.
ALLEGED SKATEBOARDER: Say what?
CHAIRMAN: Listen you punk, you will never graduate from high school in this town unless you give us ten names of other kids carrying skateboards in our business district. You got me?
ALLEGED SKATEBOARDER: Are you for real? Why don't you $@#% Off.

Hey, been reading every now and again, been too swamped to post. But the football game is boring, so I'm jumping in on this whole Cape May thing.
I'm not going to defend skaters destroying stuff. But it seems like this is a fairly natural extension of the "skater culture" that has naturally evolved in this sport. I don't place blame on anyone or any publication or any manufacturer or anything specifically, it is what it is though. I don't destroy stuff. Hell, I'm a taxpayer now.
But, that's what skaters do. In Dogtown "Man, those pools were never the same after we got done with them. . ." And the street skating style seems to be about thrashing in addition to technical tricks.
I don't have the answers, but good quality alternative places to skate (cities and other local governments paying for GOOD skateparks)seems the rational alternative.
IMHO,

The other day I saw some students skating in town and they were acting like goofs. The next day I told them in no uncertain terms that THAT'S the reason skating gets a bad name and gets banned! I've seen WAY too many good spots become busts because of kids acting like goofs and leaving places in worse shape than they found it.

I agree!! I'm bumbed at the lack of respect, alot of the "youth" show today, for anything that doesn't belong to them.I see very little difference in legalizing vandalism w/ a sledge hammer to park benches/bike racks, or any other publicly funded properties! When I 1st got the Town of Fayetteville to close the main street off for a slalom race, they were a bit aprehensive..2 races later, the towns folk still talk about how "cool" the racers were, and the respect they showed the town and it's property/appearance! That's how you make a good impression for the sport!! Every thing in it's place..and a place for everything

Banned skateboarding in Cape May.....that's an interesting article...and it raises a good question...but reading it, i can almost see their point. This gets back to destruction of public property, not public skateboarding. I ride mostly longboards and slalomboards...I dont bounce off curbs and benches, dont slide down rails and dont grind every piece of concrete i can find. But i can tell you that i see allot of areas where these little numnuts HAVE destroyed parkbenches, ground down curbs, stained concrete with their little bs waxjobs and otherwise wrecked public property with little care to anybody else. Unfortunately, thanks to the popularity of these boards, their exposure on espn and the perception the media has created for their riders, it makes us all look like little heathens. It's a case of the bad apples ruining it for the whole bunch. Skate responsibly and the authorities leave you alone. We skate up at the community college every weekend. And we've had cops come by many times to check out what we're up to. When they see we're not thrashing the place they wave and leave us be. And if we WERE tearing the place up, or being a public nuisance they'd have every right to make us stop...sorry bro...but i say if that's what it takes for them to get it right then so be it.....i wont lose a minute of sleep...ya wanna tear it up?....find a skatepark.....
