So I see Gary Holl, HC, David and other regulars now roosting here. Who's really getting out regularly and sliding?
On topic item... I've found that I get calibrated on a certain type of wheel, and need to re-orient myself when I change.
Case in point. I 'practice' on old retired 3dm Avalons, my slalom wheels. I usually have 80a's and got quite used to them, really enjoying nice long heelside pendulums in the 30-40mph range.
I switched to a set of 76a Avalons, had to get used to them, got them wired and now slide really well on them.
So I thought I'd throw on some 80's to slide a bit more loosely and found myself over-rotating and really floating backwards a loooonnggg time... no crashes, but really had a number of near dumps bringing things back around. I'm sure I'll get used to them, but at 35mph the adrenaline really gets pumping when things aren't quite right.
Now to see what happens when I pop on my set of 75a race Gumballs!

How to ease up on a 180 slide.

I have been working on my corning for the past couple of weeks and now with the addition of a nice set of sliding gloves, compliments of my skatebuddy, I have really been getting some awesome corners happening. Enter my first slides: practiced off of the crouched down cornering position and first attempted while getting into a corner.
So the board slides smoothly into a 180 but so smoothly and so quickly I get bucked off. I guess the feel is just so foreign to me I can't adjust quickly enough to the sudden stop to stay with my board. (I am hoping to slide for the sake of safety, nothing technical and I'm not a speedboard kinda skater nor do I have any plans to be doing fancy slides at high speeds.)
Any suggestions for contolling the slide so that it serves as a way of stopping the board without sending the rider flying?
thanks

Cliff Coleman teaches slide clinics!
On 2/19/2004 Cliff Coleman wrote in from 209.165.xxx.xxx: I'm currently scheduling slide clinics to be held not just here in the United States, but around the world. The first will hopefully take place in the San Luis Obispo or Morro Bay area in late April, date still to be confirmed. The second clinic will be in the United Kingdom in conjuntion with the Lush longboards Festival. This will take place May 7th, 8th, and 9th. The third clinic is scheduled for Albuquerque, NM, most likely at the Bear, May 29th and 30th. The fourth clinic is to be held a day prior to the US Open Slalom Skateboard Championships. This will take place in August. Dates for this contest might have changed so check the Contest Calendar.
If there are interested parties that would like to have a clinic in your area, contact Cliff Coleman via snail mail at: 31 Norwood, Kensington, CA, USA, 94707.
This will be fun! If you can make it to any of the above mentioned clinics, you should.

From the few pics I've seen,a lot will depend on how much (if any!) banking is left after the finish line.Maybe left + right 'stop zones' could be planned into it,but if it's a flatter ending, better have the shoes for it! I'd advise against really turny slides (ie,Pendulums) if any after-race braking area,as taking up real estate that a faster and later rider is wanting is very, very bad.Footbraking is the key,but if you Race, you gotta remember you'll have more than normal speed built up.Keep the concept of STEERING firmly in mind,as well as the good old 'step-off-the-nose+RUN!' move. Even a little bit of controlled footbraking can be enough to allow for a smooth dismount, and that Can Save your bacon. A variation on footbraking, one I like to do on really steep areas,is to bend deeply, grab the board by the front foot(melancholy or indy)and use that extra leverage to get a more descisive pressure onto the braking foot.It limits steering,so don't do this if you need to turn or hop off.Oh,and if you're as old + stiff as I am,stretch before doing this,or you'll pull an embarrassing muscle group, one your girlfriend/wife won't truly appreciate or empathize with... :-0

yeah, but what IS the best way?.....i saw pics and read what these guys wrote at the Indian run....So if youre finishing up a long and fast hill and have limited distance for run off.......35+ may be high for footbraking, especially if youve got a little wobble...airbraking isnt too effective.....so slide and pray?

How not to...

Riding with JG a few years back, just haulin' cookies through Cambridge, going way too fast to be on the sidewalks,I found that being in the "bike lane" was not the best place to try and catch up with JG. A guy in an old Monte Carlo decided that he'd just hop right out of the car without looking in the side mirror.I went from 25 mph to Zero in about 1/10th of a second when I hit his door.Thank the Lord his window was down! I flopped over the sill, tumbled to my feet, and then had to dodge moving cars to retrieve my Caster. I don't think JG even ever looked back,'cause when I got to Memorial Drive,he asked 'Where've You been?'.. Riding in the city does tend to make one acutely aware that braking is Not a skateboard's strength.

Great!! now we can help even more skaters that want to slide. We have slider gloves available at www.TimeShipRacing.com, and Cliff Coleman will be doing a series of slide clinics this summer, including one here in NM at the Bear on May 30th, after we race it.

Am I the first post?!
I need to work on stopping (or slowing) techniques.
I can bleed off speed easily on a longboard with wide trucks, but don't seem to have the same leverage when riding a slalom board. (It is set up with Seismic 105s and Avalons, Grey front, White back.)
