I am in the midst of creating the first really decent brake for a longboard. I should have it finished within a week or two and will follow up with a post. The idea is that you can control you speed on a steep, slow down in a "too-fast" situation, and for beginners, have a ride that is without fear. Later.

Sliding Gloves

I made a pair of sliding gloves out of a pair of biking gloves. I just took the blade of a roller hockey stick, cut it in half, boiled it in water, molded to the right shape, drilled out four holes near the corners, shoe glued it on the glove, then riveted through the holes. The hockey stick plastic is made to slide on asphalt, so it works pretty good. I don't know how durable they are, as I've only used them for like a week, and that's like 3 slides.

Clear grippy surface

Found a powder which turns to a gel when mixed with varnish or paint and then hardens to a see through grit. It is great on longer boards made for cruising, the see through factor lets the stringers/decals show through etc if used with a clear varnish. Wouldn't be as good on a trick board where more contact grip is needed though. Not that I do it anymore but it aint bad on your feet either !

Slide glove makes coleman slide and regular slides very easy on slanted roadways, Just take a regular glove, cut out a piece of metal from a can or something and ducktape it to the glove with the fingers spread out. Greatly reduces the friction from the glove materiel

Rubber tail protector for fiberglass boards

If you have a fiberglass board then I think you need a tail protector. It is easy to make one out of some 1/4' rubber. You can get it at any hardware store.
Step1:trace the tail of the board onto the rubber. step2:cut it out to the shape. step3:take some duco cement (glue) and glue it on. step4:put the tail in a clamp and let it dry over night. step5:have fun.
Keep it rollin' Chris-

Powell Rib Bones

Powell Rib Bones are still available from Powell Skateboards tel.# 805-964-1330. For those in the dark, these nylon plastic parts bolt on to your rails. You might need them if you are like me, and want to protect the wood, and graphics of the bottom of your stick from the abrasive bite of pool coping or parking blocks. If you ride a "park model" type board Rib Bones will extend the life of your board as well as making for extended railslide fun. Originally intendeded for boards of the 1980, one pair might not be long enough for your longboard; so buy two pair and cut them with a hacksaw to fit your board from truck to truck. They come in a few colors and if you want them you get to do buisness with one of the industry's original players.

The ingredients for my first glove called for a 4" x 4" piece of plastic cutting board shoe gooed to a glove. It works like a charm, excpet once the cutting board is ground away you gotta ace the glove. I figured out a way to just bolt on a piece of cutting board, so when it wears down you can just cut a new piece and bolt the new one on saving a glove, and impressing your friends! Anyway, it's not rocket science or anything. Email me if you want to know how to make one, or ask me to make you one (might cost you a pretty penny ;) -phil

This is the stuff that Schredmeister is talking about. It is VERY skin friendly, grips well WHEN DRY, is rather cush. It's downsides are that it's slick when wet (Ironic, considering that it is sold for boat decks), and that it is too damn THICK, so it peels off at the edges....oh yeah, it's expensive too.

Math Formula for riser pad height

On 7/18/1998

Here's a simple formula for determining MINIMUM riser pad height for any given wheel diameter. Of course if you use padded risers you should go for the next logical higher pad height. Here goes: (X= Wheel diameter in mm) [{X-50}/2]0.04=MIN riser height in inches
Example:(X=100 mm wheels) 100-50=50 50/2=25 25x0.04=1 therefor e 100mm wheels should have a minimum 1" riser
If you want to know more about this formula, I would be happy to reply to all valid questions. E-mail: Vschm01@aol.com and tell them the Shredmeister sent ya!!!!!!

Ok.Right about now your thinking, 'what the hell do u need rails on yer long board for?'.Well, there is 2 reasons. 1:board slides.Whats a board slide? A board slide is for new schoolers and snow boarders? Wrong!Boardslides are fun easy and look cooler than a slappy:2:I have a powell long - board , it has a picture of a hula dancer in honalulu, i dont wanna scrach this bad graphic off.... the rails got ya coverd. The olny problem is they are discontinued so they are hard to find. all and all, rails rock.

3-M Marine anti-slip tape

I scored this textured FOAM tape at one of the local boat-shops. Besides being extra sticky, not to mention skin friendly, it absorbs alot of the higher frequency vibrations that are part of going over 50mph. Not only can you carve at speed with greater accuracy, but you can take your ride to bed with you and not wake up with grip-tape abrasions!!!! For more info e-mail me at Vschm01(AOL).

recently my friend gave me his old CCS magizine, i have been thinking of getting one of their longboards but i look at the pictures of the longboards and i can't tell if the picture on the board will be face up when i ride it or face down. i looked at some web sites for longboards and relized that the images are face down, and i also noticed the way that the grip tape is in like strips that go down the board, SOMEONE TELL ME IF THE BOARDS ON THE CCS MAGIZINE HAVE GRIP TAPE OR NOT?!?!?!?!?!...my e-mail is LIVES4SKA@AOL.COM , E-MAIL ME IF U HAVE AN ANSWER

After experiencing deck pull-thru with standard countersunk screws I now use only truss head screws. The best I've found come from Concrete Jungle in Santa Rosa, CA (707-544-4327). They sell these 1.5 inch, black, truss head screws and self-locking nuts that are top quality. The phillips heads are 7/16 diameter and very flat. Even the alloy is good and hard: accidentally spinning my power screwdriver bit in the screw didn't even scratch it.
