After 45+ years of Skateboarding - I finally got to be
in a full-page skateboarding ad ... in this Dec. 2004
issue of Skateboarder Magazine !
-problem is, my image is only 2 inches tall...hmmmmmm.

Jack: Great story! Welcome back to the land of skating. I returned two years ago and have gone full tilt! Glad you have a son that motivated you to get back in this great game. It was one of my teenage daughter's boyfriends showing up at my house with an Ed Economy Model Gravity longboard that got me fired up again.

Three saturdays ago I bought my nine year old his first skateboard. I bought him a shop deck (7 ply maple, double-kick, 31.5 x 8.25) which seemed standard for that store, Krux trucks and 60mm wheels. I tried it and hated it. Board is too short, wheels (spitfires) are too small and too hard. My son, being the loving, attentive, I need to be with Dad at all costs, boy that he is asked me the inevitable question, "Dad are you going to skate with me?" Loving dad that I am I said sure. I am now the owner of a Sector 9 platinum series Bomber and I've never owned a better board. I took my son to Wheel Park in Aurora, CO. and had a blast on the entrance drive which is a hill about .25 miles long w/ a beautiful 6' wide sidewalk parallel to it. With full pads to protect this geezer bod it didn't take long for physical memory to take over. The next day I took my son to a little park w/ a peanut shaped skater's bowl in it for him to try. After trying a few foolhardy drop-in with a 46" long board I decided I should get a short board too. I took my lunchbreak and went to Thrifty Stick in downtown Denver, which is our shop of choice. Good prices and a great, knowledgeable, helpful staff are a killer combination in my book. I bought myself a shop board 1 inch narrower than my son's. Krux trucks and 70MM Kryptonic Classics (Orange of course). Well you'd have thought I wanted to piss in the Pope's hat when I told the youngster behind the counter to put 70MM soft wheels on that board. He was just adamant that the tallest wheel should be 60MM and hard at that for boels and ramps. I quietly pointed out that while he was 5'5" and 135# at the most that I was 6'2" and 250# and needed the speed and stability of a taller, softer wheel and being as I am employed I can afford to replace my wheels as needed. He shut up and put the board together and after he was finished with it he commented that the bigger wheels actually looked kind of hot and gave the board a look that meant business. After riding it with my son the last couple of nights, I've got say it will do. Its not my old Fibreflex and the Kryptonic's aren't Road Rider 6's, but this board will definitely do. In closing I'd like to add that my wife while not thrilled at my choice of activity during my second-childhood is definitely thrilled that its a skateboard and not a Porsche.

The first facility specifically made for skateboarding was located in Moonies Grove in Visalia, California. It was a cement side walk with a couple of banked turns.
It was constructed in 1964 or 1965.

The reason I ask is that I recently visited the skatepark in North Vancouver, Canada. And understood that it was built in '76. This got me thinking. I wonder what the oldest skatepark is? And this one was built by the city no less. It's still going strong by the way. Possibly could be the oldest public skatepark, eh?

This park was built by Jim Robinson originally for motocross. When hanggliders got big in the early 70's he added a hangglider park. When skateboarding took off he wanted to build a park and asked for some input. I helped a little but there was a problem. He wanted to build a park using only black top, no cement. I told him the park would be ok for slalom and downhill but not good for a bowlriding. He built it anyway - a bowl half the size of a football field with walls about 15ft high with a flat bottom. When it got hot you would come down the wall and go about 50 ft and then stop. It was really bad. I promised him a contest, so we put on the first(USSA) California State Skateboard Championships there in 1975. I remember Tom Padaca won the slalom and downhill and I took second. Russ Howell won the freestyle. If I dig out the old B&Ws I could remember other contestants. That was the only contest we did there.

Thanks for the information about "Scarred for Life". The author is comming up North arond the 15th to get a few copies to Jim Cluggish and myself. This guy really did his research when writing his book! I learned things about the old days from him that I had no knowledge of. He even found the manager of the old Hobie Team, Dave Rochlin (sp)? I overheard Dave and others talking about urethane wheels in 1965 at the First International Skateboard Championships. Jim Goodrich is trying to get ahold of me regarding this very issue. I have yet to talk with him. Does anyone have his number?
Go buy Scarred for Life. A very interesting read is what I'm expecting.

Cliff very cool photo's of you. I just got my copies today and haven't had time to read it yet I'm waiting for the kids to go to sleep. Quotes by Hackett and many others. Not the same SoCal shots and same skaters. A little bit of skate history from all over the country. It's nice to see some fresh faces and that skateboarding really did start everywhere with the same passion we all talk about to this day.
Gareth it was great having dinner with you last night and learning more about you and Michael. Who know's we could of skated Winchester or Milpitas together back in the day.
