D.C.

R., When in Washington D.C., provided you have access to an automobile, you are within an hour's drive from a Vans Skatepark, and a vintage, free, unsupervised 1970's snake run and bowl (no vert) park called Lansdowne. Lansdowne, is north of D.C., on the south side of Baltimore, Maryland. The local topography tends to be fairly hilly, so I'd imagine there are also good bombing hills. I'm not much of a hill bomber anymore, but maybe one of the D.C. downhill crew will pipe-up with some information. I've been led to understand that there is a neighborhood within D.C. proper, called Palisades, that has a variety of good, longboarding hills. I've even seen a "Trail Map" of the neighborhood, from one of the D.C. Downhill guys, that rates the streets in the same fashion as a Trail Map rates slopes on an ski resort.

For more specifics on Lansdowne or Vans, feel free to e-mail me.

France, Vancouver, and D.C.
On 7/9/2001 R. wrote in from (132.239.nnn.nnn)

hey out there,

first chapter: if you ever get a chance to get the hell out of Paris (or Nice) and into the French country, bring your longboard. Too many sweet-ass hills to count, and France being a good semi-socialist country, keeps up its asphalt in most places. Plus, most older medeival cities are on the top of hills. Fun fun fun. Only problem is crazy French drivers. It is the undiscovered mecca of longboarding, I'm convinced--Witness the Supaflex dudes.

second chapter: So, what's the downlow on the PNE bowls, now that they are open, eh? I'm hearing that they rip, but I want independent confirmation.

conclusion: are there any good bowls/bootiful hills in the D.C. area suitable for longboard looting? I'm 'specially interested in bowls.

Looking for hills?
On 7/7/2001 jjeff wrote in from (65.44.nnn.nnn)

I don't know how many of you have discovered the terraserver web page, but go to terraserver.microsoft.com, simply click on the advanced find and type in your location. This will not only give you an aerial image (although likely dated), but you can also get a topographical map as well. Very handy for discovering hills, just zoom in on the map a bit and look for a lot of brown lines. I usually have maps.yahoo.com open in another window to figure out street names and such.

Stonegate Rd, Highland Park, IL
On 7/7/2001 Dave H. wrote in from (65.15.nnn.nnn)

NBT,

It's off greenbay road between Lake-Cook and Clavey on the west side of the road. From Chicago, you'd take the Edens to Lake Cook, exit east and go left on Green Bay for a block or two until you hit stonegate on the left. A nice hill on a very lightly traveled road and there's even a little cul-de-sac at the bottom to park. Know any others?

Seem to be willing to play in traffic more in my old age. lol Probably 'cause I can't find any hills without it, grrrr. I've skated various parts of this road, never the whole thing (can't slide, and it would be hard to find traffic light enough to do it). Skated the lower east side for the first time, very nice.

So I'm watching the Wizard o' Oz for the 6th thousanths time, and I'm seeing some nice hills around where the apple trees that can talk grow- you know, near where the tin man hangs out. Access is easy, and no cars. Only, it is a long way from Kansas I guess. Has anyone else been here?

Province Line, Princeton, NJ
On 7/4/2001 Geoff wrote in from (158.252.nnn.nnn)

Yeah, this is Geoff and Steve. We went on a longboarding expedition today to places I, Geoff, found out a few months before. We've decided to name it Province Line Park, since every street leading off of the main road, Province Line Road is a sweet longboarding style hill. One is to practice your carves on, another to speed board down on a crazy hill with a blind, narrow curve at the end to get your adrenaline pumping fast as Hell. Another hill is a steep freefall down a nicely paved street. The other is a sweet speed hill. Check it out. Province Line Road in Princeton, NJ. Two ways of getting to the road is by taking Pretty Brook Road from Great Road. Another way is by taking Pretty Brook Road from Carter Road. If you wanna check this place out, email me at unwrittenlaw771@earthlink.net to get some directions. It's pretty phat for the lesser experienced longboarders.

Steve, I feel your pain! I'm in Cherry Hill(a real oxymoron..no cherries and no real hills!) Someone posted a response to me about a place in the philly area. Check the archives for it as I haven't had time to go there personally...I've had to resort to hilly parking lots, indoor garages and the like. If anybody knows of some rides in this pancake like area, I know I would be mucho apreciatto!

girls...i never meet any girls, and the guys i do know aren´t all that fun to ride with. they tend to want to show me up, whereas i really don´t care who can ride harder.
the park´s really good, but i don´t ride it. petaluma and sonoma have parks, too. never been to them, but hear they´re good. there are a few longboarders that go, but it´s mostly crowded with the 12-15 year olds. like all parks, i guess.
there are a ton of great hills in santa rosa (check out fountaingrove, gravity games had 1999 qualifying event there). the whole fountaingrove neighborhood is loaded with hills and new pavement. it´s a new development so more and more people are driving around there.
there are loads and loads of sweet hills of all levels in the country if you´re willing to drive. you´ll basically find fun hills all around, just look a little. early morning and full moon runs are a blast. the hill i ride most is in my neighborhood. it doesn´t get much over 30, but it has some crazy turns if you go high enough. at the bottom you go through a busy stop sign, usually you need someone to spot you through.
good luck with the move, sonoma is beautiful

looking for girls who skate hills in nor cal (sonoma, lake, mendo and humboldt counties, bay area), haven´t met any yet. i´m comfortable from 30-40 mph. feels better to bomb new hills with a partner. i know plenty of good hills, all levels (speed and carve), and have plenty of boards if you don´t.

Top of Washington Park, down past th Rose Gardens, back to the "lift" (Max train). This is one of the average rides near central downtown and easily accessable due to the frequent light rail system. Mt Tabor park has short rides with some good speed in parts, great hang-ten surfaces.
If anyone in the portland metro area is looking to gather a group of people together in search of new plases to ride and meet new faces contact Josh Nattinger at jona3x@hotmail.com and I will get back to you ASAP.

anyone from Jersey around here? yeah, my town is possibly the worst place to skate in the world, the only decent hills are highways, or lead into incredibly busy intersections. Sure I can slide, but at high speeds when I crouch I get speed wobbles so bad that my board starts bouncing off the ground.

i dont know if any of u guys have a Carveboard, but i have recently found some gnarly burms to skate on. yesterday i saw a 20ft one!! im going to ride it tomorrow, but the one at my highschool (Mira Costa, Meadows Ave.) has a set of three burms in this sort of step pattern, it all goes downhill so u can get a whole bunch of speed and rip a huge turn or slide. u can also risk it and go off the top and try to wall ride the portable buildings, but dont break em, they're pretty damn flimsy.

while i must agree that the presidio has some killer hills, i have been stopped by the presidio police twice. one the cop almost gave me a ticket for 250 bucks for "public endangerment" it really sucks about the cops, so if somebody wants to skate there often, don't ride in the street on any main roads and keep a eye out.
peace
