The ditch conversations made me remember a fairly decent ditch in Springfield. I took a long lunch break and checked it out. It still looks skateable. It runs perpendicular with Fleet Street which is between Franconia and the Parkway, Turn on Beulah and take Fleet Street. This is also close to sweet downhill run of Oakwood Drive just off Van Dorn Street and the Beltway. Oakwood is a two lane road that dead ends into a Industrial site. Its barely ever used on the weekends. You can see the road from the Beltway going east toward Old Town Alex. It is just past the Van Dorn exit.

GBJ, your taking me back to my early days of skating around 1975. Behind my Junior High, North Bethesda there were some ditch walls we'd ride. The only problem was you could only ride one wall at a time because the middle was filled with water and algae. We used to bomb the hills at a new development right next to the ditch called Drumaldry. There was a similar ditch on Cedar lane and Old Georgetown Rd, with a big steep smooth school parking lot across the street. Then we discovered the pooks hill apartment pool ....

I consider myself a lucky individual when it comes to the accessibility I have to classic hits right outside my front door. My daily hills include Sanchez St. Southbound from Hill st., Castro North bound towards Clipper St. Noe st. Northbound over the hill into the Castro. 24th st westbound off of twin peaks. Traffic is manageable all day long, pavement is buttery and cute girl spectators in 15 second intervals. If anyone local wants to go out, I'b be glad to accompany and share what I know. Any range of skater is fine. Peace

Ah yes, StillWaves. Last memory of skating there...getting carted away by the county po-lice. Something about being inside the fence on an interstate highway... My folks would have been pissed if they hadn't dropped us off there in the first place.

Aaaahhh, for the days of good ditch skating in the D.C. area. My memories are filled with places. Cashell, MLK, Shady Grove Metro ditches (I & II), StillWaves, and a little drainage complex in Olney that'll remain unnamed for now. All, long since, rendered unskateable by the authorities, except for the bowl in Olney, which has been rendered almost unskateable by the passage of time. It's still there though. I drop by to visit it every once in awhile. It was never big enough for a longboard, and the surface is now so rough that newer, harder wheels are impossibly slow; but if you have the right equipment it can still be a fun, little session. I first rode this odd, little bowl, on bicycles, about 28 years ago and first skated it two years later. I can still get eight or nine walls before I'm winded, and since I'm always there alone, it takes no more than ten runs before I'm completely whooped. It's kind of a miracle that it still exists, so I tend to protect it a bit. If you want to know more, contact me directly and we'll talk.

Years ago, someone took me to a HUGE drainage ditch somewhere in Manassas. Sorry I don't have directions, but maybe one of the Prince William locals knows where it is. This ditch is on the scale of the one in the movie Grease, in other words, big enough to carve it using a car. If you ever find it, please post the location!

Me and my nephews cleared out Alan Chaney's old ditch. I had them skating my Sector 9 38" Deep End board (it was the only one with us at the time). It was a great to see the current generation of young street skaters going off on a fat old guy's board in of all places but a ditch.
If anyone else knows of ditches in the Washington DC area please post. Back in the day, we held skate contests at the Arbutus Ditch and when I was in college, the Riverdale ditch was the place to be.

PS, I shouldn't have yelled at the Vans Park employee (even though he still doesn't understand the idea of customer service after I had a talk with him). I have all the respect for the Northern Virginia Vans Skatepark because the current manager at Vans, Mark Hunter, makes the place so fun to skate despite the corporate pressure he is constantly under to make the share holders of Vans happy with profit. If you ever skate that park tell the managers that by the way are all cool that David from Surfrider Foundation sent you and they will make sure your time there is enjoyable.

Some one mentioned about the PNE bowls. Where are they and when can they be ridden? Are they ok for long boards? Looking for great longboarding hills in BC, willing to travel.

Article on the famous Landsdowne Skatepark in Baltimore. Check out Washington City Paper: Cheap Seats http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/cheap/cheap.html.
Landsdowne is one of the few first generation skateparks in the US that is still around.
BTW, I'm looking for input to take to the design meetings for the new concrete park to be built next year in Arlington, VA. Send me and e-mail with your ideas. Thanks

Thanks, Coolaid Man, Here's the article (copy and paste): http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/cheap/cheap.html
Did you talk to the planning director at all? I wonder if the bowl will be rebuilt with vert this time, or just smoothed out and repaired (keeping the less intimidating design). From my personal standpoint, being about 1.5 hours away from Lansdowne, a nice bowl that goes to vert, but still have the roll-in design that it currently has, would be optimal.
This is such awesome news. With the proposed driveway and parking lot, I'll no longer worry about some kid breaking into my car (not that I ever had much of a reason to, but having to park so far away, I always felt that it could happen).

Here's a link to a video http://www.migrationboards.com/presrace.wmv. I wasn't at the race, did make it one day when they were practicing. This road is closed to traffic on weekends. The maps that GBJ was talking about can be found on the migration boards web site. Email Doug, they meet to ride sometimes on thursday evenings at the tennis courts on 18th street in Adam's Morgan. At least one of the guys in their crew is into bowl riding and could hook you up.

Was recently in Chicago for the weekend, looked like a fun place to roll around, despite being flat. I would have loved havin' my board along, at least for transportation. Saw some poor guy with a motorized scooter gettin' harrassed by "da man", which leads me to wonder. What are the laws in Chicago on boards? Not that it will keep me from ridin', but lets me know how stealthy I'll need to be, and what to expect if someone in blue would like to have a chat.

hey hey, more north bay riders. yeah, occidental and all that has some open empty roads, usually. try sonoma skatepark, it has some sweet bowls to carve up, better to ride on a longboard than SR or petaluma. so, those of you up north, let's move this conversation over to the events forum and get a session going this weekend, or next weekend early morning (party the night before?) sunday or saturday? seriously, we've been blessed with a butload of great hills up here, let's put them to use!

the park in petaluma kind of sucks for longboarding. santa rosa's park is all right, good snake run. take a back roads drive from SR to Occidental and Freestone and map out the hills in west sonoma. Erika nailed it with early morning or full moon rides. most of the better hills in west sonoma are filled with tourists during the summer.

Not so much a review, but curious, in reading through the archives there seemed to be the tentative formation of a clutch of nightime or Sunset District riders.....I'm wondering if this is still happening?
actually; I do have a review: nightime skating home from Inner Sunset friend's house to SoMa, over to Page St., go east, mellow carving, head south right past Divisadero, cross Church St., come out on 14th St west of Market St., slalom the double yellow lines, carve down 15th and 14th all the way to So. Van Ness, an excellent nighttime carve-your-way-home.
summertime and the carving is sweet.

Duane, Correct, mostly. ECRW is a group of serious vert skaters, dedicated to the search for and riding of pools. Pretty much a reaction to the back-to-back, flat-walled, vert halfpipes, these guys are constantly on the hunt for round-walled terrain. I believe the old wooden bowl was sold or donated to a local park system, when the neighbors had had enough of the noise. They are not concerned with the re-building of that bowl anymore. The current motto is "Support The 'Crete", as the huge, concrete, triple-sectioned, in-ground "pond" is nearly complete. SUPPORT THE 'CRETE!! Send your money to Jaime.

If you are going to be around DC, check out www.skateboardmadness.com These local rippers are dedicated to rebuilding a once-great wooden cloverleaf pool in Northern Va. and would no doubt have a line on some serious, private local session spots.
