Anyone in the DC metro area should come out to umcp. This campus is huge, jam packed with miles and miles of paths and streets, also three parking garages, the newest being six stories. All surfaces are in excellent condition. You could ride for days and still not get through all the really great runs. I have been riding here now for about 2 years and I am still finding new runs. Campus is empty in summer and on weekends, no need to worry about cars, peds or bikes. I challenge any campus to beat a UMCP springtime ride!

So you want to ride Signal Hill? First lets get this out of the way. The fine if you get caught is STEEP. Did i mention the fine is steep? To the tune of $550.00. The fuzz is pretty cool as long as you are in control, and headed South(towards P.C.H.), and not towards Cherry, which is way faster. I have actually phoned the police dept, and obtained permission- but was warned to proceed with caution. This is a killer carving hill, with little or no traffic. The surface is sweet, and in the unlikely event you need to stop for a rest, your skate key fits perfectly on the nuts holding the super-shiny everything prohibited signs... I have nine of em to date, and no fine, so I'm still in the green. Its a mellow walk back up, and I always take the run a minimum of 3 times. I park north of P.C.H. two stopsigns-about 1/3 the way, and walk from there to the top.Everytime I've been "stopped" by Mr.Man, I've been walking back up- which isn't prohibited. ENJOY THE RIDE!

Hi Bill. Yeah, there's a few spots around. There's the Orcutt skatepark. Don't really know what it's like, but hear it's pretty cool. There's also a skatepark in Grover City. I think there'as a ditch in Buellton behind the U-Store storage warehouses. South of you there's the Santa Barbara skatepark. Lots of fun. There's also the infamous Flyaway which is a 2 sided ditch w/ railings @ the top. Finally, I think it's still there, but slightly south of you just past Gaviota is a little ditch we call The Separator (Our buddy S.P. separated his houlder there). It's by the Mariposa Reina refinery. Good luck & let me know how it turns out /;~)henry

LBK and Slappy, i ran the parking garage. It was real smooth but the grade was mild on some of the levels. I could be fun for pumping skills. LBK, you better grab all you can before the baby comes cause soon you will have nothing. Except of course an awesome child. Welcome to my world!

Currently working at the SLC 6 and 2 pads at Vandenberg Military Base, CA. The roads/hills are insane. Don't think the space cops will let me set the cones up. The waves are sick too!. Does anyone have any local knowledge of the Vandenberg/Santa Maria areas? Near by roads or pools to skate?

LBK and Slappy, funny you are talking about an indoor parking garage in case of rain. I just found one in my neighborhood but havent tested it yet. Felt smooth to the touch. It could be fun to set up a course there. I will run over there tonight and take a run.

That's an easy one... Just on the inner loop of the beltway and rt.50 is the office complex called Fairview Park. The Verizon building garage is usually the first one I hit. Then there is a building directly across the street that I hit second. Then there is numerous garages by the Marriott hotel. All of them have elevators for getting back up.
I've never been busted at any of these garages. My favorite garage downtown is the GWU Hospital Staff/Student Garage. Park on the street and skate in the entrance away from the attendants. It's got a nice pitch and a spiral center.

the rain in south carolina falls mainly on the coast
but we still got to check out folly beach
the edge of america and the site of the 2002 world championship longboard slalom contest
*details on the site are considered to be an advantage and will not be disclosed
we were summarily (sp?) dismissed upon our arrival when we learned that the holiday inn on the beach was booked solid as the shag convention was in town
for those of you who don't know, shag is southern for "white people shouldn't dance"
anyways we got a room back up the road at holiday inn express
last one left
one king
non smoking room but somebody smoked in it
not to mention the cheap cologne
well after a night of sleeping in a bed with my wife, and my two kids, i was ready for some skating
but the rain had done come already
we went in and had breakfast at some hippie dyke joint right in the center of town
i digress
as usual
so we cruised and looked for a place to stay during the contest and ended up deciding to stay at the holiday inn cuz they got a pool
we stopped off at tasos and he gave me directions to the site
a contest at a totally undisclosed location would be best
locals are always gonna have an edge
for instance, i don't think nobody can beat me to the bottom of my hill
heh heh
the rain was cold and relentless so we opted for a trip to the charleston aquarium
it was good - especially the section where they let you pick up starfish, crabs, etc. etc.
chattanooga is better
if any of you out there are into visiting aquariums
chattanooga is excellent
i'm looking forward to returning to folly beach and actually having the chance to skate
until then
time to practice
r.
p.s. take a left on hudson at the gas station - the course is down by the basketball courts

Lake Las Vegas has a Henderson address, so it should be close. Have fun. And tell me what it's like to run at top speed on a longboard! I could have hit myself for not finding room for pads/helmet, cause I'm sane enough to have figured out not to do it without it. But it was a beautiful hill.

Thanx for the info C-money. I'll be out there in 2 weekends for a bmx race, but I ALWAYS bring the board(s) along for the ride. There's a copuple of drainage ditches I mean to hit while I'm out there as well. One is freshly poured concrete, right next to the I-15 north lanes. It's just after Cheyenne. The other is around Henderson. I'll keep you posted /;~)henry

Just got back from a national sales meeting, brought a board as usual (not into the traditional "golf" thing). Only got to pack a new Roe Henry Hester Model slalom set up as I had to bring lots of stuff out, and used my approved 2 pieces of luggage for that, so had to use a board that would fit diagonally into the suitcase!
I was pleased to have the Roe, I just got it and had a blast; however, I really wished I had a longboard, too, after I found one of the best hills I've ridden in quite some time.
If you go to the Lake Las Vegas resort (outside of Vegas about 30 miles), and to the Hyatt Lake Las Vegas (famous for "America's Sweethearts" being filmed on location, you'll find it. Go past the entrance to the hotel, and the road ends in a round-about. Take a left up a nice, smooth (newly paved asphalt) road which is fairly steep (LaCosta steep, I can't really eyeball gradients very well) and probably 600 yards long at least. Above that is a gentler slope up to the residential area that's probably 600-800 yards. A good half-mile run. The run out on the bottom is a little tough, have to take a hard right or try to spin around the round-about.
I took 5-6 runs in an hour period (no traffic, couldn't hitch back up, so walked it).
If you're ever headed out that way, give it a shot. Up top, I was just pumping like crazy on this great little slalom set up. Then carving back and forth down the steep part till about the last 100-150 yards which I shot pretty straight.
A beautiful hill, if you're ever out Vegas way, and lost too much in the casinos, work out your stress there!

Anyone in the Boulder, CO area that can point me in the right direction for some nice downhill runs? I’ll be in Boulder for the weekend, (May 10, 11, & 12), and I’ll bring my board. I’d like to find something in the 20 to 35mph range, hopefully fairly long, like a mile or two. Any help is appreciated!

Geez!! I just read Scott's report about Maui.
My wife and I will be there from Tues through Friday, Feb. 19-22.
I've been riding on Big Island for the past few days. Where I rode Yellowstone last year (firehole lake road), I was able to ride in Volcano Nat'l park this time.
We've been staying north of Kona, so I found a little ride in a town called Waikiola, just south of Waimea. It's a small town, with only one shopping center. Across the main drag from the center, there is the Post Office. It's at the top of the hill. From there, it's downhill, steep in places, but not unmanageable. Total, it's about 1/2 mile long, but ends in a mild uphill by the firestation...just incase you go too fast!!
WAY too much fun, on my homemade 37" Camber board with Seismic 135's and Krypto 65mm's. A longer board would have been better!!
Which is why I'm so bummed about Maui...this sucker is entirely too short and jumpy for that Iao Valley Road. I guess I'll have to be happy just cruising around Lahaina.
hang loose, peeps.
Steve in AZ. Er, eh Hawaii, for now.

If you get a chance to go to Maui do not go without your board. The town of Wailuku is about 3 miles West of the airport on Maui's North shore. Just out of town to the west is a road called Iao Valley Rd, it takes you up into an awesome tropical forest and finally to the Iao Needle. I walked it all the way up and got a chance to feel the road and prepare for things like small rock slides. From the top it is about a 3 mile downhill to Wailuku and after dealing with town you can ride another 2 - 3 miles down untill you are all the way to the beach. The road is steep in places and has no place to run out or stop and no shoulder so I highly recommend full body armor. I was there during the slow season and the road was almost empty, I did have to pass a few cars but traffic was light. Back in Wailuku there are 3 hostels that have rooms for about $16 a night and offer daily guided tours. I made this whole trip with my Tahoe Longboard and a backpack, no rental car, no reservations, just fun. Round trip air to Maui can be found for as cheap as $250 (suntrips) making this a reasonable trip for anyone.

some nice hills in the bay area, lets see, there is southgate, thats a pretty steep, supersmooth, couple minutes long run in daily city. the presidio has many nice runs, just go there and explore, you are bound to find something. i've heard there are killer hills in marin, and of course, there is the berekely hills, but those are some steep crazy roads. i've heard that Mt. Tam is also killer ride, only problem is the road is closed at night, so you have to hike to the top to skate down.
