Alex,

We've just mentioned FDR, but for a newbie you might want to go real early or just watch. Fairmount park has some nice paths along the schukyil. Manyhunk (sp?) is built up the side of a hill, I'd scout that out. THere are some nice downhills if you pull into Fairmount park from City line ave. Go check out Love before they tear it down, just watch for the cops.

Good Luck Bro,

Joe & Nick

FDR for Al
On 4/26/2002 Joe & Nick wrote in from (167.82.nnn.nnn)

Al,

The beauty of FDR is that there are so many lines and you can work one side of the park to the other. Throw a couple of guys in that mix and it gets crazy. Weekdays and early mornings are the best. Last time I was there was a Sat. morn about 10 AM and there were maybe 8 kids. I think the vibe is OK as long as you're not on a bike or blades.

...speaking of Philly - has anyone been to FDR - I was thinking of taking a run down - just wanted to know about the scene - from the stuff I've read it sounds like locals are pretty territorial - may be a dawn run is in order for the first time??.........Al

To Eddie. If you're looking for hills in NYC, here's the deal. 136th and Amsterdam up in Harlem: It's 4 lanes at about 5 degree decline...nice for carvin. Overlook Terrace in Morningside Heights (190s on the northwestern tip of Manhattan): It's a local favorite up there...about 6 degrees and kinda narrow, so buckle up...you can ride down to 184th-ish and take elevator rides back up to the top of the hill. Last but not least, Snake Hill (aka Fort George Hill): 200th Street...about 6 degrees and wide-wide...very aggressive traffic coming up the hill, so watch your ass. Send me an email if you wanna ride with us...we go out about once a week...i'm at jgaites@yahoo.com. Peace.

Has any one sk8ed Sandhill Rd, El Monty, Foothill Rd, Alpine, All off 280 West Side? Just Curious. They look good but I havent had a chance to take a good look at them.
There are a few good short hills off Wood Side Rd. North East from 280 By Alameda De Las Plugas Wood Side Estates. I think thats what they call the neighborhood.

I'm on my way back to California this year and was wondering is there were any competitions from here to Califonia. I'm stoping in Tucson for about a week. If any one knows dates drop me an email. Any one in the denver or cali area ever want to go riding drop me an email.

Singer Island...what was that place called...the Edge? I only saw one band there...Black Box Project or something like that. Kinda too New Wavey for my taste, but they did a great cover of X's White Girl. I think I saw the Essentials at an outside show at location, ummm...2 or 3 of Open Records...Progresso Plaza in Ft. Lauderdale. An afternoon deal, several bands, can't remember the exact year. Saw 'em again at some little theater in Marietta Ga, must have been '82 or '83, so you might have been playing, Henry.

Saw an ad for a show by the Eat in Miami a couple of years ago, but it was the day after the show I saw it. Kicked myself...hard. Would love to see them again. I still pull Communist Radio and God Punishes the Eat out to listen to now and then.

I have no idea what happened to any of the Reactions, but I loved that band...saw 'em twice, PBs and the Balkan. No wait, only once...the PBs show was the Eat. Isacc just introduced them then pulled out his manhood and rubbed it all over the microphone, getting "new wave" banned from there once and for all in the process. I was 16 or 17 LOL.

The first time I ever went to Cadillac, I couldn't ride the pool since they were warming up for a contest later that day there. I watched some in between skating the bowls, and I saw a guy fall to the bottom where he lay...until his board came down and speared him millimeters above his eye, below the helmet. Blood everywhere. Gave me something to think about next time I went and got to skate the pool. I got tile and thought that was a big deal.

Serge, I'll look for the Arby's next time I'm down that way. And there is a huge ice rink in Pompano (the Panthers train there some I think)...I always thought that was near where Cadillac was...I think because there was a Burger King nearby or something.

Henry,
Solid surf was located at 455 E Oakland Park BLVD. An Arbey’s is now located there. I was working there when it opened until they added the water slide. Great session happened there! I believe an ice skating rink is currently where the massive bowl was at Cadillac.

Hi again Chuck. So where on O.P. Blvd. was Solid Surf ? It was on the East stretch on the way to the beach. The park was right next to a car wash on the right side as you were looking @ the park. The Cadillac Pool. Man, that was one scary thing. Sprained my knee there @ the ripe age of 13.
Something you should know about The Essentials. I was the replacement for the original bassist. He's the guy on the 7" w/ "Turn Off your Radio" on it. That's great you remember all those old bands. I hear The Eat is still @ it & you can find "Communist Radio" on some current compilations. The Reactions ? Whatever happened to Issac Baruch ? They were great though. What year did you see The Essentials ? If it was late 82 to early 83 then it was my poofy haired mug you saw. We did play once @ Singer Island /;~)henry

Solid Surf...that name didn't ring a bell, but then I only rode there two or three times (once being in the TP ramp). But then, mention of the peanut pool does ring a bell. Never rode it though. I did get to ride the Cadillac pool a few times...man that was hairy! Deep, and so smooth you didn't know you were at the top until you looked down and saw you had stopped. A sad day when they tore it down.

On a side note, does anyone know exactly where on Oakland Park Solid Surf was? Howzabout exactly where on US1 Cadillac was? Everytime I drive by either area I wonder exactly where the parks were. Not that it really matters, but. Skateboard Safari is noow part of a parking lot and some midnight basketball courts at the county park that was behind it.

Essentials! I loved that band...saw 'em a few time in Ft. Lauderdale, and once in Atlanta (I was in college by then, so I only got to see the FL bands every once in awhile, summer or during breaks, or the very rare Southern tours. The Cichlids, the Eat, the Reactions (boy I wish I could get another copy of their 7"), Essentials, Darla and the Hayheads, GCIB, Charlie Pickett, Crank. Fun times. Glad I asked what band you were in, I almost accused you of being in GCIB...not thatthere's anything wrong with them (loved 'em, actually) but it might've looked pretty funny.

Hi Chuck. Yes, the Turning Point ramp ended up @ Solid Surf on East Oakland Park Blvd. That stupid thing gave me dizzy spells too. I remember Skate Safari very well. used to skate all the parks up there too. Always good to get away from Dade & go surf & skate up there. As for the punk rock band question, yes. It was The Essentials. That's how I wound up in Cal. Ah, the stories from the good old days one can tell (heh, heh) /;~)henry
