There was a ride in Poway a few weeks back. Where in Poway was the ride? I work in the business park in Poway and was thinking some of the streets up here would be nice to carve. Being a business park, not too much traffic on the weekend. Late

This is a awsome hill. I started at the enterance of montana de oro state park, and skated all the way down to hazzard canyon, a popular surfing spot. The first part was about a 20% grade, with wide, banked corners. Then after the AT&T road, it got pretty steep. The road was really smooth, and just wide enough to get good carves in. With hard carving, it took me 7 and a half minutes to get to the bottom. Since it's mothers day, I only encountered two cars on the way down. Then I walked back up, and conquored the other side. The first half of that side was pretty twisty, then it straightened out for a fat bomb run at 40mph.

Hey Glen...
I checked out the the street just on the west side of castaic, above the launch ramp, (Ridgewood)... sure enough, it would be a beauty to skate. Over a mile long, 4 lanes wide. However, I would not skate it myself. Lots of traffic because of the new homes being built. Lots of cross traffic too and now there are some stop signs. Also, there is very little run out.
I have posted some pix on my site of a different hill on the east side of the lake, aprox 3 miles from the bottom going up Lake Hughes Rd. This one is 0.4 miles long, 2 sweeping turns and aprox a 6% grade. Also some pix of the hill on Lake Hughes Rd that I mentioned before... www.hugh308.homestead.com see ya, HR

DT, Thanks for the link... It took me a bit, but I remember how to do math now... thanks to my kids help. Some day when you get old, you too will see how sad it is when the ol' brain starts to fade!
I am going to practice with the trig a bit and then I will post a "dummies" type approach to calculating the grades. It sounds a whole lot harder than it really is... thanks again, HR

I know of a few good places where people can bomb some good hills in Santa Rosa, just north of San Fran. There is fountaingrove pkwy. which is extremely fast, around 55-65 mph. This is where they held the Santa Rosa races last year. Then there are a few moderate hill around 30-40 mph about a mile or two away, like San Ramon dr. and Yerba Buena. The whole skyhawk area is pretty good too.
P.S. fountaingrove hurts when you fall though.

If you want a big hill, I know were 2 are. The small one is somewere from 2 too 3 miles long and the bigger one is about 4 miles long. I dont know what the grade is on the hills but there pritty steep. The corners are wide and long for good speed. The 2 hills come down at eachother from ether sides of the canyon and they meet in the middle with a bridge. There located about in between Mariposa and Oakurst on highway 49. The hills are on the countyline, the two airea codes are (559) for Oakurst and (209) for Mariposa. I haven't done them yet but I know there fast. e-mail me for more info.

Hey Glen, I will try to check out both sides of the lake. Hopefully I will be able to take some pictures and I will post some details.
Do any of you out there know how to calculate grade %'s? I thought of using a stick, a long string and a line level. Then I would calculate the aprox drop per foot. Or I could use a GPS and give altitudes at the top and bottom of the hills... any scientific help would be appericiated. (I know that there are a lot of "big brained" guys out there!) As far as burbank goes... I have not learned how to slide yet. Not sure I want to even though I see the advantages. Seems just a little scary to me (mental thing for sure) HR

Hugh r, There is also a good hill on the west side of Castaic as well, I believe. It goes to the West ramp, you may want to check it out as well. Both of those roads would be real busy on weekends though, lots of trucks pulling boats traffic. There is a hill in Burbank that I know of, that's closed to traffic on the weekends. You just need to be able to slide to a stop at the end, there's no runout, actually there is a 5" dia. steel pole that closes the road off to traffic and it would really hurt to hit it. If you go up to the Starlight Bowl ( it's on the hill on the east side of Burbank next to the Debell golf course) keep driving on the road past it about another 200 feet and you'll see a closed gate, "the pole". You can start there, and it's a steep, nice surface downhill for just over a half a mile, beware of "the pole" that closes off the bottom end of the road though. It appears around a turn, so you may want to walk or carve the hill first. Skate History note - it's the hill that they used for the final downhill race in the movie Skateboard.

Hey Glen, I was thinking about that area myself. I think that there are a few spots near the north/east end of the lake that would do. There's not a whole lot of traffic and as I remember the road condition and visibility are good. I will try to make a run out there this weekend (It's only about an hour from my house) and I will let you know...

Hugh, how about starting at the top of the road that goes to the east launch ramp at Castaic and heads down to the lower lake. If I remember right it's a lot of downhill and pretty clear view. My truck always hates pulling my boat up that hill, may be good for downhill.

Elisabeth Lake Road, CA

I have found an excellent hill for speed. It is aprox 6 miles west of Lake Hughes on Elisabeth Lake Road (aprox 60 miles north of LA) This is in the mountains near lake castaic. On one side it is nearly a half mile long and drops several hundred feet through 2 camel backs. It has a short 150 ft flat before it starts a 400 ft accent. The road is in good condition with only minor cracks that can easily be avoided. There is no cross traffic and the view is complete for the whole run. I started one third of the way up the hill (at the first hump, and was able to acheive 35 with only a one foot push) I am not sure if it would be possible to skate from the top and live... but halfway up would get you going real fast. I am sure a bicycle could pull 60 - 70 with ease.
If any of you guys want to plan a trip, let me know. You'll want to bring a lunch! I am going to try and take some pictures and post them on my site in a few days. I will update you later... HR

Boulder colo. dude--Heh I've done lehigh several times in the past few weeks. I go during 7th period with my buddies. we'll park a car at the top an one at the bottom and ride it over and over. It is an awesome run. i also tried juliard several months ago and ate it big time. to get to juliard go up green briar then take a right past Fairview on galespey this winds dow to a stopsign. Juliard is on you left then. It is without a doubt the fastest I've ever gone. I got down half way and then was doing a massive carve when my board flipped under me. it was really wierd, it hasnt happed since, but obviouly i ate shit big time. another great place to go is rock creek of in superior. I go there at least once a week and ride wiht my friend
I go to fairview and do a lot of boarding around there. Try going up in the devils thumb area. To get there. to to the top of lehigh and go west to the top of the hill. once you are at that dead end to west 35 yards then go north for 50 yards then drop off to the east on a big hill with nice pavement in one spot then drop off again up to the north and go into a cul de sac and whip around that. The pavement is kid of bad in places but it is pretty fast.
I think my big bro e mailed you a while ago. Hopefully we can hook up and go cruizin sometime

Lehigh St. to Table Mesa Boulder, CO

Lehigh St. from the top to Table Mesa or Broadway. You can make this a couple of miles depending on where you start. Starting from between Emerson and Heidelberg it's a straight bomb to Table Mesa, no stops, downhill lane is a left turn lane+wide traffic lane+bike lane+parking lane. After 11 pm little traffic except for the Skip (bus), you can usually use the uphill lanes too for carving. Good for practicing cross-stepping etc. at speed, or stay in the bike lane and tuck until the wobs set in. Start way up above Heidelburg in the subdivision (uh, Hardscrabble Drive I think) and it's steep and snaky one lane each up and down, gets pretty fast just before the Heidelberg intersection but the light stays green in your favor unless a car is sitting on Heidelberg, again very little traffic. Unlike many of the other streets running off that ridge, Lehigh is smooth and well lighted. Slide out in the cul-de-sac just before the Table Mesa stop, or continue through the intersection and use the *uphill* (westbound) bike lanes on Table Mesa to go all the way to Broadway; hell you could go all the way to 27th and Baseline without pushing. Better hitch a ride back to the top.
Get there: Go west on Table Mesa from the Broadway intersection like you were headed up to NCAR, after not quite a mile make a left on Lehigh and climb straight up to the top, there's a subdivison of townhomes up there.

Adam may not be racist, but profoundly ignorant nontheless. Those comments are outrageous. Adam, there are a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures on this planet. You appear not to understand that, contrary to all messages otherwise, the center of the universe is NOT you, your high school, or the U.S. Life has gone on before us and will continue afterwards. Could you imagine feeling excitement at actually connecting with another skateboarder from a life vastly different from your own? Could you imagine yourself experiencing the sense of wonder and belonging that might come from learning of a culture different from that of the U.S.? "Hey, whaddya know, there's some dude who speaks a different language and lives a totally different life from mine, and he's diggin the skateboard, too!" Please, let's not perpetuate the arrogance and destruction of American ethnocentrism.
Oh yeah, I had something to post. There's an out-of-business ski mountain nearby and I've been carvin up the access roads...steep, clean, and PROUD. Today I discovered an old water slide. I tried to send it luge style but had a hard time making the tight turns on my 48" S9 pintail. Anyone ever gotten good at riding a tight snake like that?

Adam, I hope that I miss-understood your post. I have lived in the US for nearly 39 years. Do you know how many languages I speak? Let alone write? One, only one little language. Sure it may be (in my opinion) the language of technology, but its not the only language of skaters/people.
I personally applaud those of you who use English as a second or third or fourth media for communications. Please do not let the frustrated writings of one person discourage you from expressing yourself... HR
