new to longboarding and have taken to riding some of the hills on the edge of little lake valley in northern california. the hills aren't super steep but instead, long and curvy. good for deep carves. mostly farm traffic on the road. i've got a 46" sector 9. i dig longboarding.

Ocean Beach
On 6/29/2000 Hamm wrote in from (63.27.nnn.nnn)

At 5 bucks a session and 30 bucks for a year, the 39,000 sq ft Public Skatepark in Ocean Beach is a bargan. Even on the most crowded days, there's almost no wait to ride the back bowls. Always at least 1 other longboarder there.

Denver?
On 6/29/2000 FUZZ wrote in from (216.146.nnn.nnn)

I'm wondering if anybody knows of good parking garages in Denver or suburbs
I've pretty much found all the downtown locations but don't want to overuse them.
DTC seems like a good location but I haven't ventured down yet. Any insight would be helpful.
Thanks!

sucky parks
On 6/29/2000 Glen wrote in from (216.102.nnn.nnn)

Most of the free public parks in So. Cal. are really bad. I was skating out at the San Dimas Ca. park early Sat. morning and met one of the designers of the park. He worked for a company called Purkiss-Rose who has built a bunch of the small city parks. He asked what I thought of the park and I told him, in a nice way, about some of the design problems, like the 1/2 capsule bowl that sends you into a 3 foot wall. His design concern was that the city didn't landscape all the way up to the cement. I was more concerned with 4 foot 1/4 pipes that were designed around 6 foot-to-vert transistions and the fact that the bowl was not level, makes it real easy to get speed going one way but you can barely carry it back uphill. He was concered that the grass didn't come all the way to the edge of the cement.
Purkiss-Rose and Lawrence Moss are two design firms that are building many of the small city parks. These guys don't skate, and don't get the design criteria. They are landscape architechs. If your local city is planning a skatepark, do what you can to make sure one of these two companies are NOT designing it.
Please, if you have ridden their parks, email them and let them know what you think. In a grown up, diplomatic way.
Purkiss-Rose is at
http://www.skateparkdesigner.com
Larence Moss is at
http://www.lrmassoc.com

BEWARE - one of their lame designs may be coming your way.

Vans-"The Skatepark Experience"
On 6/28/2000 Glen wrote in from (216.102.nnn.nnn)

Blah-I haven't skated OB yet, but most of it looks better than the Onterio and Orange Vans parks, now if they will only pull down that fence so us old guys can go for dawn patrol sessions or full moon sessions.

Namon- I'm a stupid Californian, so I should have known the quantity value of hella.

Doobie-I'm a val and travel to the Orange and Onterio parks all the time. It's worth it if you're here, if you're looking for good skateparks though, the ones in Colorado, Arizona and Canada are probably better. It could be a "grass is greener.." complex though.

Vans Skatepark Milpitas, CA
On 6/28/2000 James wrote in from (24.4.nnn.nnn)

This park is sick!!!!! It has a huge variety of things for everyone. For the longboards there is this area with a rhythm section with humps and banks. I am going out and getting a hybrid longboard to rip out there. I work next door at Dave and Busters so I will be there all the time. Hope to see you guys out there.

Arnold Arboretum in Mass
On 6/28/2000 Matt wrote in from (63.77.nnn.nnn)

Just in case there were any people out there in the Boston area you HAVE to hit this place. Its an Arboretum so it isn't open to cars. There is a great full paved two lane hill that is right in the middle of the park.
The run is about 7/8ths of a mile long. The hill isn't too steep but you can get some speed if you tuck. The road kind of spirals down the hill.
It is really good stuff. Go there if you can. Be sure to check out the rest of the park. Watch out for peds/rollerbladers/and bikes. The pavement is rough in some spots. Ayone else skate in Mass? Let me know.

is this worth traveling from Kansas too? i am flying out to Jacksonville FL to a killer park, KONA, my favorite park... and next summer we are taking or motorhome out to Cali to visit family and go to skateparks and I'm gonna stop at the Sector 9 plant/factory/whatever. so next year would it be worth the drive from the San Fernando Valley? I used to live there, then Jax, and now Kansas.... next I'll be moving to Pakistan... hopefully not...

Vans Park in Woodbridge, Virginia
On 6/28/2000 Sarah wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Me & my hubby went to this park. It has a huge selection of vert & mini-ramps (not my thing) 2 pools maintained beautifully, a concrete street course area where I spent most of my two hours, and a bunch of other wooden ramps set up in different ways. Also there are two low to the ground grinding/sliding rails and a tall slanted one. There was a sort of ledge/bench thing made out of metal on a slight incline. It was $14. when we went too, and crowded. But the session right after us was just about empty!! Bad timing I guess. I'd say go at least once to check it out, but watch out for little kids who aren't paying attention, as you have to everywhere. Also, it is in Potomac Mills Mall, which is an outlet mall, so they have a Vans outlet. Don't buy any shoes at the park before you check out the outlet. ---Sarah ;)

Vans Parks
On 6/28/2000 Blah wrote in from (216.188.nnn.nnn)

That's kinda expensive. I'll take my year membership card to OB (Robb Field) here in San Diego instead. It may not be as cool, but I don't have to drive as far and it isn't as expensive ($30 if you buy a year pass and the beginning, or $5/session until you do 7 sessions, then you get a year pass, so you never pay more than $35)

I to old to know how much "hella" money is, but it's $14.00 for non-members to skate a 2 hour session and $9.00 if you're a member. They supposedly have a Winchester type washboard run there that Steve Caballero helped design. Anyone who gets there please report.

Mountain Creek DH park

Just got back from the Mountain Creek Downhill Longboarding park and it was excellent, eight lanes of smoothest asphalt with banked corners twisting down the steepest parts of their 900 verticle foot mountain, unbeleivable! Lift access to the top no traffic ,unreal. Here come the supermodels that were observing my amazing skill with the telescopes in the observation areas, huh, what's that ringing sound?, god damn!its my alarm clock:)

Bishop off 395
On 6/25/2000 Rocket wrote in from (24.4.nnn.nnn)

Check out the acqueduct service road. As you drive and down near Bishop and mammoth you'll see the service road to the east (mostly)
there'a also a couple of hatchery roads. They have little traffic and will give you LONG smooth rides.
Might ewant to wear a helmet as some sections do get steep.
Spring time has less traffic summer getsa more traffic.

Ripton Vermont Rte 125
On 6/25/2000 Carrie Ade wrote in from (140.233.nnn.nnn)

If you're ever in vermont and you have a board with you
I suggest you check out this spot. Now, what is special
about it is that it's not really just one location. The
entire town of Ripton is a hill. It's steep, bendy, and
miles long. It has great bombing and carving possibilities
I've gotten up to 43mph on certain parts. It's great
death defying fun! Where a helmet, and protective gear, it
is a main highway. I usually don't wear protection, when it
comes to Ripton I make sure the helmet at least is in the
car.
