i wrote a review of this place when i first started skating it and did not realize how good it is. Mclaren park is in the southwest corner of frisco, barely anybody has heard of it. Lots of wide pretty smooth roads with no cross streets and very minimal traffic. I've only done a few of the roads there, but if you explore it i know you will find plenty. i've done about 40+ there but i don't start at the top. if someone started at the top of some of these roads, 60+ speeds are easy. people in sf bay area have got to check out this undiscovered country for speedboarding.

I drove by Revere today. It is one of the places that Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams and earlier, Steve and Dave Hilton, Torger Johnson, Danny Bearer, all used to ride. It has banks everywhere, from 15 foot high monsters to 3 footers. I was alarmed to find that every bit of blacktop was torn out, every bank was bare dirt. Hopefully this means they are resurfacing everything because it probably hasn't been surfaced in 20 years. If so it will all be ripable again. This could also mean that they are getting rid of the banks and redressing the whole school. If this is the case, this will be a major loss to skateboarding and to our history.
I'll keep you posted. Glen

going tonight for the 7:00 - 10:00pm session. It's only 15mins past Vans Onterio and better for longboards. I won't be there until 7:30 or 8:00 but hope to see you there.

I'm always up for finding new locations, so write if you want to ride! Also, the parking garage at 15th & Welton or Glenarm is a must!! I've been there a couple of times now and it's fairly easy to get by security.

Anyone out there! I've had a longboard for awhile but haven't really put it to much use and I'd really like to now but I don't know where to go in Southern California. I know there are probably plenty of places, so could someone school me? e-mail me at kidriddle@aol.com or kidriddle@yahoo.com
Thanks, A.J.

Hey Glen S. ( S is for south ) The park is all wood ramps. The bowl and 5' mini-ramp has a real nice transition. Some of the wooden bowls that I've ridden have real kinked corner sections and this one is real smooth. Because of its shape, there are countless lines to follow. It's big enough to carve but small enough to hold your speed coming from the deep to shallow end. I recommend it. The tranistions handle a 36" - 46" board real well. Burly coping in the shallow end of bowl favors bigger wheels, 64mm-66mm but the miniramp has normal coping. I was riding 59mm 97 duro wheels and was able to deal with it but bigger would be easier.

Blah, When Gravity had thier shop in Solana Beach those guys practically lived there. The shop is in San Marcos now, but alot of the guys still live in the area and skate there alot still. The fact that so many Gravity guys skate there so much was instrumental in making it 'longboard friendly' when they redesigned it recently. Its a good skate, check it out. Dave

The streets in a rich neighborhood in my town just got repaved. The reason it's such a rich place is because it's on the biggest hill in town. Until now, the road has been s***, full of patches, cracks, etc. I just skated the lower half of it today and it was totally awsome.

Newburg looks big. I don't get the volcano with the rotating top but I definatly get the bowl!!!!. Tell them to bid some jobs in So. Cal.
Vans - I enjoy having 2 Vans parks within an hours drive from my house. They are a corp now and are trying to make a buck in their given field, I don't begrudge them that at all. I would like them to quit pushing the finishing touches to make their big "coming out parties" though. The cement work has suffered because of it. They had to redo the red pool in Orange because they didn't give it enough cure time and I've heard of a lack of cure time in No. Cal. as well. Wally Holiday designed the pools but then wasn't allowed to do the concrete work, which is something you let a pro like him do. Vans parks miss the boat in some areas like price, session times and some of the design aspects, but at least they are a company trying.
Encinitas is a cool park. I filmed down in San Diego at Narrow Gate skatepark on Wednesday and stopped by Encinitas on my way back north. I ran into Brad Edwards (Gravity) up there, he sessions the park all the time. It's a burly park with a nice bowl, Tony Hawk's new 1/2 pipe, a longboard friendly street section and a herd of mini ramps ranging from 6' down. I'm hoping to get back down there soon and skate.
We may have decided to move our weekly Wednesday night skate from Vans Onterio to the Brickyard in Redlands. www.brickyardskate.com It's about 15 min's from Vans and it real fun. Their session runs from 7:00pm-10:00pm and is $8.00 non-member. We rode there last night and had the bowl to ourselves.

I looked at the pictures looks pretty cool, I would like to ride it. It does look like you can keep a nice flowing line throughout the park.
My questions:
Volcano with a rotating top? Why? How is it allowed to rotate?
Anyways, 9' vert capsule huh? That's pretty deep, but here in California they like to make the public parks "low impact," so things usually don't drop more than six feet. To get anything bigger, you usually have to go to a non-public park, like Vans parks or YMCA parks.
A related question, has anybody here been to the YMCA, Encintas skatepark? Rumor has it that the Gravity team is partial to that park.

The Sunset District in San Francisco is dream come true for those who enjoy a large variety of long downhill runs. The Sunset has not only killer hills, but unreal backdrops of the Marine Headlands, the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, and the Pacific Ocean. The best run that we have found starts at Ortega @ 22nd Ave and ends at Ocean Beach. If you ride South 5 blocks from Ortega you can take a train (at Judah Street) back up the hill and do it all over again. Traffic can be a bit heavy in this area so make sure you wear a helmet.

I'm not sure I understand your complaint about Vans. In the past 2 years Vans has opened 4 new skateparks that I know of, maybe more. What other single company is doing that much. Yeah, they're not cheap to enter but Vans is a corporation who like any corporation is in business to make money. I know of several 8 to 15 year olds who pray to Steve Van Doran every single night for opening the new park in Woodbridge VA. Also, without Vans marketing force in regards to the Triple Crown and other contest, you would never see skating on mainstream TV except for the X-Gaymes. I'm really sorry Vans has'nt opened a park across the street from your house, but if you keep supporting them they most likely will at the rate they are opening new parks.

Why doesn't Vans build a public skatepark for the community that supports them? Oregon is proud and honored to have some of the best skateparks in the world, including Burnside, Lincoln City and now Newberg. The Newberg Skatepark is 24,000 square feet of bliss. It has a volcano with a rotating top and a double-bar rail shaped like a dragon. It is continuous, without any deadends, handles traffic very well and was built by Dreamland, the best in the world. Check out www.SkateOregon.com for photos and more information. I write this in an attempt to encourage Vans and the X-Games, etc. to give more to the community that supports them and to help recognize those, like Dreamland, that already are giving and are progressing the skating community.

I've been there once. I found the snake run to be kind of useless. The bowl at the end is huge, and the actual snake is way too tight to do anything, even on a shortboard.
I agree with Glen--the peanut pool is a pretty serious pool -- not for fooling around.
I thought the funnest thing there was the rectangular bowl outside, at the end of the street course.

The pool is ripable if you're Jeff Budro or Brad Edwards. The shallow end is probably 6' with a foot and a half of vert. The deep end is 8' with 2 and a half feet of vert. The transistions are too tight for me but I'm not real good. The snake run is kinda wierd too. The third turn doesn't send you neatly into the bowl, it kinda sends you into the hip. I usually hit the third bank which sends me back up the snakerun to the second, which then allows you to set up for the bowl. Unfortunatly doing it this way doesn't give you much speed into the bowl. I do like their mini-ramp and they have a fun outside section that has a resevouir type of bowl thats great for speed carving on longboards.
