Call Steen (founder?) at Freebord and ask him about the fire access road at Mt. Tam. He told me it was beautiful, closed to cars, and on Mt. Tam. He mentioned it as the single best place he knew. He's at the Freebord factory, use the main number on their site.
Ride it then review it

I'm hoping to head over to mt. Tam pretty soon. I hear it's really cool to cruise, but I'm not really familiar with the area. If anyone from the S.F. Bay area has any info, it would be much appreciated.

Sk8r, The park to which you are referring was called SkateWorld, and had the first park pool in the D.C. area. I have one of their newsletters around somewhere, I'll see if I can put my hands on it.

Once again, a quick look at a map has told the truth where memory did not serve...I left some things out (probably for the good of mankind, in the long run.)OK,before I continue,an apology to Chris Chaput is due, mostly because I only remembered his WHO'S HOT photos from Skateboarder and I was ENTIRELY unfamiliar with his accomplishments since..Iwent to his website..suffice to say,I take it all back. This guy has clearly come to play.AERO!!!! OK,since Mr.C has turned up suited for the game, I would advise the rest of you to do the same..This update will clarify what I have hinted at inb the past. THERE ARE THIRTY-THREE SEPARATE DROPOFFS on the SOUTHSIDE ALONE.CAUTION MUST BE EXERCISED AT ALL TIMES, AS THIS IS A RESIDENTIAL AREA!! There are several differing approaches to this situation.1.YOU CAN GO ALONE.(i dON'T RECOMMEND THIS,as LOOKOUTS ARE USUALLY A NECESSITY)2.Go with a crew,a chase car,and a video camera(Much better, and chances of survival increase exponentially, the further over your head you get,And you WILL GET OVER YOUR HEAD,TRUST ME.STEP 1. Get a map of the city. It's very spread out,and you don't want to waste any part of your trip looking for a particular spot. 2.This is a city that is still in its growth phase, so it's kind of important that if you are clocked at a high raTE OF SPEED(WHICH WILL HAPPEN) a plausible explanation will almost certainly get you out of it,(The first time.after 5 or 6 times,WELL...)that's why you need the map..there are enough hills in this town, that if you get hassled in one part, you an just move to a better one.(We used to spend whole weekends just doing this.) You can literally go from a slow cruise to a full-on tuck in the same ride and often on the same street!!29th Avenue should be the epicenter of any "point and shoot"attempts, because all 33 downhill sections have an entrance there. Most homes there are of the ranch or split level type, so you can see a long way down on the straight sections,(THANK GOD!)thus avoiding the dreaded "PULL-OUT".(still,don'ttry the long ones alone,as there are sections that you simply do not want to get blindsided on.I'm not going to name all 33,but I will give highlights.. REGAL:from the stoplight at Ferris High,(at the apex of the hill,There are THREE different hills to hit,and depending on what time it is,you may want to select accordingly:NORTH:One block to push, pump, or pray, depending on your ability level and religious affiliation, and then drop, for six blocks straight,(NOTE: this is a "heads up"run, you can see the whole thing once you've begun, and you willbe subject to light to medium pullouts during the whole time,so be aware. Surface:This one gets redone at least TWICE a year, and ranges from med.grippy to glassy.VELOCITY;ANYWHERE FROM 25(IF YOU THROW A LOT OF TURNS)TO 45+(IF YOU DON'T)CAVEAT:DON'T GET DISTRACTED;THEREIS A TRAFFIC LIGHT ON 29TH,AND ONCE YOU START, IT COMES UP TERRIBLY QUICKLY.REGAL:SOUTH:AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY.USUALLY SMOOTH,LOTS OF TRAFFIC (LOOKOUT NECESSARY)BUT ONCE CLEAR OF THE SCHOOL,SLIGHT GRADE,AND A SLIGHT ,GENTLE LEFT-HANDER THAT TURNS INTO THE PALOUSE HIGHWAY AFTER ABOUT A QUARTER- MILE;OVERVIEW:NICE WARMUP FOR WHAT'S COMING NEXT.NEXT TIME:BELOW 29thAvenue;AND:HIGH DRIVE/CEDAR;(AEROLAND)BERNARD ST; GRAND AVE.(NIGHT AND DAY) ROCKWOOD BLVD{'Welcome to Switzerland,Mr.Bond"}and:" BAD H:Why 'Hot'Californians Don't Scoff Anymore After One Visit."

I finally got a chance to ride at OB today. I was there at opening and rode for about an hour. I rode the two bowl areas and like them a lot. There are a ton of possible lines there ( so why couldn't I find any!!!):). San Diego rocks for skating/beaching/biking/swimming etc. The only problems I had with OB park, was that the concrete is a bit rough and therefore not as fast as the cement work at Vans or the wooden ramps/bowls I normally ride. I need dual sizing wheels. Wheels that start off for your drop in at 59mm for fast acceleration and then grow to 70mm on the flats to carry speed, then resize on the transistion to 59 for better pumping and coping release, etc. The other problem is the hours of operation. Some of us old guys want to be able to get pre-work dawn patrol session in. This 9:00am or 10:00am opening is lame.

Upper Broad Beach rd. should be a qualifying run in any hardcore downhill skate competition. Mi amigo who lives one rd. over took the hill from the top like a world class pro, and he's 38--a young 38--Encinal Canyon, just north a road, is tits and has probably the best curves in Southern Ca., hands down, say no mas. We're organinzing a slalom skate competition for the two roads as well as a few hairy spots in the area--to be broadcast by some cats we know. Any superkooks who think they can qualify should contact me at the e mail address listed above--I will e mail back the time and date for qualifying; peace.....Smiley
