Happy Easter to everyone in the speedboarding community!
As far as speed wobbles are concerned, I would say tighten up the trucks when you plan on going fast! Keep them loose enough to control your board during a fast push, but tight enough to avoid unwanted board movement at speed.
David and I both run 35% baseplates on a dropped deck and this gives us a very stable platform. We also run our back truck tighter than our front truck by a bit. Normally, I look at the number of exposed threads coming through the adjustment nut as a quick reference for my front vs. rear tightness(assuming you have the same bushings on front and rear). I usually run a few more exposed threads on the rear truck.
The more time you have at speed on your board the more relaxed you become at higher speeds. However, having your trucks too loose for the conditions is nerve racking for you as well as the rider that may be following/overtaking you.

1st I would like too thank you Bros.for your help too all the young speedboarder who have the need too know things.You two are the best in the world for your know how in many areas.The speed thing about skill going fast or just balls.Well if you have the talet then going high speed on a skateboard will take real big , well you know! After that, skill picks up again.I dont know if that helped but this is a great thing happenning here, thanks again you two.John, your turn.

every mile per over 40 really kicks in. the wind resistance is mostly just overcome by steepness,especially if you skate in civilian clothing,a smooth helmet and outfit may make the speed easier. I figure that the steepness of a hill = horsepower,when you compare a coasting vehicle on a slope to a powered vehicle on flat ground. Also bailing,if you bail on flat ground the energy of the hill continues to move you even though you're no longer on wheels. On a steep hill your weight is centered further forward on the front truck,so a 40 mph run on real steep hill in a loose heavy resistance outfit,is way more dangerous than a 40 mph run in sleek gear on a flatter hill.

SFKasJ..Thanks for doing the timing at the pumpstation. Hope to see you riding at the next one! I'd be down to practice on that hill some weekend when you feel up to it.
cfav..The top racers at the pumpstation events are incredible skaters. Maysey is like a machine...smooth, precise, powerful. JohnO, Kosick, Carrasco, Chicken, Evans, Hackett, Lynn Kramer, and more...they all rip!!! Good to see Maysey and JohnO signed up for the Maryhill Downhill race...I think they will both rip on that hill.
Yorck..Not sure if I will make it to Europe this year. I will be back sometime for sure...I still want to do one of the freeride events in France.

Hello everyone on ths forum, lots of great info on here. I have been skating for a few years and never realy get speed wobbles any more and hit speeds of around 35-40 mph. I remember when i fisrt began skating, the faster i went the more likely i was to get speed wobbles. Now that i am used to being relaxed and am used to a little speed i was wondering what the difference was between 40 and 50 and up ? I am curious about going faster and just want to know if you find that you have to fight the speed wobbles more as you get going quicker or if that is more of a beginer thing ?

Just a question really, since I've started boardin the speed thing is like an angel sittin on my shoulder whisperin that if I go fast everything will be ok and more often than not it is. I think thats because I totally commit coz you got to when your gonna go at death defyin speeds. Do you guys sympathise? Do you find that goin at speed is more about skill or more about comitment(balls nahmean)? Obviously skill is necessary but is it the main thing or is the mind set the main? THis would be for DH standup mainly but am interested with relation to other areas of speeeed.

Chris..I have not tried any of the “high-end” downhill trucks/hangers/base plates as of yet. Flindt and Brunson might be able to tell you what they think about their JimZ’s.
Downhillers are starting to get a bunch of options if they have the $. The high-end trucks offer things such as CNC accuracy, true 8mm or 10mm axles, kick-ass bushings, precision pivots/ spherical bearings and more. Many of the top slalom racers are currently using the Radical truck and talk about the benefits they get when using it.
It looks like we will have quite a few options in the near future…Randal, Magun, JimZ, Landyachtz, Radical, Geezer…you might want to wait a while to see how it all plays out before you spend your money.
Randal downhills work well for many riders and are very affordable. Riders with big wheels and big slides seem to bend or break the stock axles. Shnitzel, Geezer and others stuff a better/bigger axle in these to make them more bulletproof.
I really like my Randal Comp 2s…. Beefy casting, good axle, nice width. I put in a longer/flipped grade 8 kingpin, change out the top bushing and I’m set. For the money, I think the Comp 2 is the best value.
Shane..I would not recommend using the Z-Roller on a downhill board. The geometry of that truck tends to make them really twitchy and unstable…the opposite of what you want for a downhill board. Get some Randals for your speedboard.

cool.the rodgers bros are one of the inspirations for the freak bros here in chitown.speed.....hmmmmmmm.that pumpstation hill has taken out two guys i know.sfk and fadel.i think its killer,the mix that the pump station draws.good on masey,winning on that hill says something about you as a skater.same for past wimmers.i think people dont understand how vital the pump station is regarding the racing scene today.go to one and you will see.cf

Been there. Done that. Thats why I was timing the race instead of riding in it. Neck and butt are still sore 3 weeks out.

DT, John and I are filling in for Chris Chaput at the request of the webmaster. This is an existing Q&A forum about "speed".. not limited to speedboarding or streetluge. Downhill skateboarding and streetluge happen to be the disciplines John and I are most familiar with.

Kludy..Good to see you and Justin yesterday. Those BLR GS races are a blast and are a great way to learn how to push a skateboard and your abilities to the limit. I think GS is great cross training for downhill racing. Scary? The speed is not that scary, but the thought of a 25mph highside/slam without leathers on..that's a bit scary!! 50 mph downhill speed runs still seem to get my adrenaline pumping a bit more.

Second of all, I am really wondering about downhill trucks. What I am wondering is: Are the jim Z hongers or any other high priced trucks worth it? how so? Have you tried Geezer hangers, Jim Z, or any others, and how do they compare to each other as well as to stock Randal DH trucks?
I have raced with (against?) you guys, and you seem to have it down to a science. Your opinion really would mean a lot to me and my wallet.
