Soft vs Hard

Jonathan, For straight-line downhill and roll speed, I would go for the soft wheels in nearly all situations. Soft (sub 80a) have virtually dominated speedboarding and streetluge races for many years. Some racers successfully use the 80a (krypto) or the 81a (abec11) formulas...I’ve never heard of anyone racing 84a or higher. The soft urethane compounds are better at absorbing the surface roughness and seem to have better rebound characteristics. A wheel with high rebound (measured in percent) actually gives back a high percentage of the energy that is used to deform it. Think of your wheels pushing off of all the little bumps on the road as they roll over them. Springy, bouncy, soft urethane makes fast wheels.
If racecourses were as smooth as a concrete skate park, there would be more use for the harder compounds. Most hills/race courses are rough enough for the soft wheels to be the wheel of choice.
The only drawback with the softer/high rebound compounds is that the tensile strength of the urethane typically decreases as rebound is increased or the wheel is made softer. This means that the wheel will wear faster when pushed in turns. Traction typically suffers when a soft wheel begins to show wear...this can happen in as little as 1 run at a race like Maryhill.
For my race boards...75a...If it's really hot or the 75a's are wearing quickly..78a...Hope that helps!

Hey, David, I hope you will take a stab at this question, as Chaput hasn't (yet) responded on his forum.
Under what conditions is a softer wheel faster than a harder one, and why? To put it another way, under what race conditions would you, personally, choose to ride, say, a 75A or 78A wheel rather than 81A or 84A (or vice versa)? I'm sure the short answer is that the softies would be smoother on rougher pavement, but can you go into more detail? What differs in how the hard & soft wheels actually roll on various types of pavement that makes it so? In this case I'm interested mainly in roll speed for downhill, either in a straight line or with minimal-to-average turning (i.e. NOT hard GS or slalom-style turns).

Catching someone's drift is analogous to understanding the general meaning of what someone implies or insinuates.

Hey Danny, We can access it from the backside according to a few people I talked to. A few of us rode it last Saturday from the ridge and there was heavy dirt in a few areas and minor track marks from heavy equipment for miles. It looked worse than it felt, but we tried to avoid areas that we had spotted on our trek up. I don't know what the top sections, above the ridge and the bonus mile, are like at this point. I imagine there will be a few spots that will require us to slow or even walk our boards for a bit. Nonetheless, several of us were planning to ride again this weekend. The signage says closed Mon -Fri daylight hrs. Let's plan something for early this Sunday before it is too hot. Let me know when you guys can make it and we will ride!

John and/or Dave, I know I'm always posting, asking if you guys wanna go skate but I'm doing it again. I'm thinking GMR this Sunday. I'm gonna try to get Rob Mold and Jeff Budro out also, but we'll see. Do we have to hike up or can we go from the back? I need to skate a hill soon or I'm gonna lose it. Talk to ya soon. DC

David, It was nice meeting you at Maryhill and it sounds like you have been riding some great roads this summer! I am glad to hear that you had a good time in Europe and I am sure the roads were more than challenging. The pictures I have seen lately have been very impressive and I can only imagine how technical the riding was. When we saw you at Maryhill, I was using a Dainese protective jacket and David had a Fox brand. The Dainese was pretty pricey at $260 and I think the Fox was around $150. Kellsey, at NJK leathers, suggested this kind of arrangement and he fit the leathers snuggly over whatever protective garments we wore during the fitting process. A good source for this type of equipment is www.ChaparralMotorsports.com San Bernardino, Ca.

yo rogers bros, i liked the style of body armour you guys were wearing at maryhill like a thin mesh lining with shoulder/chest/back/elbows protection. what brand was that?
seems like body armour under leather without any padding is more comfortable and provides more protection than the armour and padding built into the leather, which is what i have. the armour in my leather will move around and slip when i fall, espically the elbows, it seems also that leather with no padding and less seems would be more aerodynamic.
i think i will start looking for some old skool paddless leathers on ebay......unless you guys would happen to have some for somebody around 5'8" 140 pounds...

I'm sure Andrew will also be stoked to ride with you and Olin again. Any weekend with good weather will probably be a good time to come down. Summer temperatures are here!! Be prepared to sweat!
