The ISSA Board of Directors have unanimously voted YES for Ottawa to host the 2011 ISSA World Championships of slalom skateboarding. We are pleased to see the return of Worlds to Canada and wish you good luck with the preparations.

Your event has been awarded Major status, the only one in North America 2011. The European Major this year will be the European Championships, recently awarded to Grenoble. The ISSA World Ranking allows racers to earn Major points in only two disciplines per year, so participation in one of these two events are important to gain a good position in the World Ranking.

Not sure why but everytime i go back to that thread i need to ask for my user name and password?

If anyone is interested, world records should be set with 'clean runs', criddling makes it not the same coarse as the next run unless you hit the same cones, how could that ever be right?

Low participation in rule voting

PSR wrote: "However, I hope it dosen't continue like this, where one 'group' putting on events, states a 'rule', and it becomes sanctioned as LAW with less than 50% of elligible RACERS voting."

The 'group' is the members of the ISSA. The rules (LAW) only apply to ISSA events. 50% voting??? I only WISH it were anywhere near that high a percentage...

Do you have experience with any national or international sports organization or other volunteer group where you can get more than 50% of the eligible people to vote? Do you know how that is achieved? In my experience it is always just a few, interested, energetic people who vote or otherwise participate. That's just the way things are.

You can't really expect the interested, energetic, involved people in the ISSA to wait until there is over 50% of the RACERS to become involved before we move forward with the rule-making and other business of the ISSA? If we wait for this, NOTHING will get done.

The wheel-thing could have easily gone either way with a bit more participation. We opened the door, invited everyone, begged for participation -- did you vote?

Thanks, and Aloha
On 12/18/2007 PSR wrote in from United States  (75.68.nnn.nnn)

Pat, thanks {yet again} for your endless work in helping put together good, clear rules for the racers to go by.

I'm still ticked with 6-wheelers (or 8 wheelers, for that matter) being considred to be 'not' skateboards. The voting seemed very much like being in Florida's 4th Ward in '00... Disenfrachised dosen't even describe the inability to participate, but it's done. I'll still race in local NON ISSA races, and coach for tose who want to be at ISSA races. However, I hope it dosen't continue like this, where one 'group' putting on events, states a 'rule', and it becomes sanctioned as LAW with less than 50% of elligible RACERS voting. Especially if TRADITION or INNOVATION is tossed on it's ear to please a few. If these factors are ignored, we'll soon have NO CHANGE, and contests that have NO ROOTS. I've seen what that attitude has done to Snowboard Racing, I've fought that battle, too... And other than a few riders I've coached, I've LOST THE WAR. It's evident, too, just by how RACING is portrayed in SNOWBOARDING. Trust me, don't even go there, it's UGLY.
Good luck with the effort nonetheless, I hope it works out for the better, somehow.

And to all whom I've raced with, or met while Racing, THANK YOU!! + Merry Christmas!! You're all awesome, especially for JUST, ONLY, being the skaters you are!! Ride Fast, take Chances. :-D

ISSA SLALOM racing Rules Available
On 12/18/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (24.22.nnn.nnn)

The ISSA Rules are now published. They are available at:

The best way to print these rules is by using your printer driver to make a booklet (2 pages per sheet, landscape paper, fold in middle). This will print all 16 pages on 4 sheets of paper, 1/2 sheet per page, so it can be folded in a booklet form.

If your printer cannot handle printing in booklet form, then you can conventionally print the rules on either 8 sheets (duplex -- one page on each side), or 16 sheets (simplex -- one page per sheet of paper).

Contest organizers and racers are encouraged to become familiar with these rules, as ISSA sanctioned events will be run using these rules. (Minor exceptions as indicated on the contest sanction application are allowed.)

ISSA Rules -- voting complete
On 11/30/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (24.22.nnn.nnn)

I want to thank everyone who participated in the rules update process -- those who voted, those who made proposals for changes, those who pointed out inconsistencies and problems, those who made arguments for/against various options.

The results can be viewed at www.slalomskateboarder.com -- in the "Members Voting" area.

The next step will be to incorporate the will of the members (the outcome of the voting) into the rules. The ISSA Board of Directors will then review the final rule book to make sure it matches the voting results, and then it will be published.

Again, Thank you for participating.

-- Pat

ISSA Rules Voting Available
On 11/14/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (24.22.nnn.nnn)

The public comment period is now closed for the 2008 rules update.
The next step in the process is to vote on the counter-proposals to the rules.

This voting forum will be open from Nov15 thru Nov30. After the vote is completed, the rules document will be updated to incorporate the result of the vote, and then published for use in 2008.

The suggested method is
1. Print the original draft proposal (see URLs at end)
2. Print the ballot. (see URL's at end)
3. Decide what to vote on
4. Proceed to the voting forum and cast votes Click here for link

Banked Slalom
On 6/18/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (15.252.nnn.nnn)

The ISSA does not recognize the banked slalom as a separate discipline.

A banked slalom race could be tight, hybrid (special), GS, Super-GS It all depends on the steepness, length, and cone spacing.

Ditch or "banked" slalom racing
On 1/8/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

I received a question from a race organizer in New Mexico where they like to race in ditches (banked concrete) rather than on roads or sidewalks.

If he applies for an ISSA sanction for his event (GS race on banked ditch), should it be considered just as though it were held on a street?

My personal opinion is YES, because the similarities outweigh the differences:
Cones, cone penalties, downhill incline, turns, speed, starting line, finish line, timing, long race course (compared to tight slalom) .... all of these are indistinguishable from a "normal" GS race.

But I'd like to hear other opinions on this.

Would it make a difference if he were applying for a higher status (MAJOR, MAIN), rather than a lower status (PRIME, BASIC, PLAIN) ??

What do we say, do events held on a ditch count?

2007 North America Contest Coordinators
On 1/6/2007 Pat Chewning wrote in from United States  (67.189.nnn.nnn)

In 2007, ISSA contest sanction applications in North America will be handled by the 3-person Contest Coordiantion team of: Chris Barker, Eddy Martinez, Pat Chewning. A similar body is being organized for Europe.

After considering the information in the application for status, the contest coordinators will assign a status to the race (Major, Main, Prime, Basic ... these determine the World Ranking points possible for each race).

Please apply early enough to attain the status you are seeking: Major -- 4 months Main -- 3 Months Prime -- 2 Months Basic--none

Obtain the sanction application here and send to Pat Chewning, Chris Barker, or Eddy Martinez:
