RACE LOCATION: Tower Grove Park in South St. Louis. Friday's fun session will be on a slightly steeper hill with a mild left-hand bend at the top. Saturday and Sunday's races will be on the same hill as in past years, an S-shaped street with a mellow slope but plenty of speed.

THE COURSES: As in previous years, they're gonna be "slalom," with courses varying from 40-ish to 88 cones. New this year: Start ramps! :-)

FRIDAY, MAY 28, we plan an afternoon/evening outlaw session at "Spot 2," a slightly steeper hill at the other end of the park. Single lane, no timer, just for fun. If you wanna work out the kinks after your travel or just hang out, stop by any time after 5:30 p.m.

This is what it looked like in 2008:
Friday evening course

SATURDAY, MAY 29, we plan a single-lane jam at "Spot 1," the same hill as previous years. Course will be a sort of loose-ish slalom, with spacing anywhere from 6 feet to 20 feet, emphasizing speed and fun--makeable for newbies, challenging for experts to go fast on. Take as many runs as you want; fastest time wins.

Paul Graf about mid-course way back in 2006:
Graf_offset_front

Brian "MmmTacos" Ellison on the single-lane course in 2009:

SUNDAY, MAY 30, we plan a dual-lane 88-cone race (in honor of the race's eighth year). Cones will be set straight (no offsets) but will follow the natural curves of the road, which bends right, then left. Cone spacing will be somewhere around 7 feet, perhaps with up to eight "mystery" cone spacings.

Can't seem to find any photos of past dual courses laid out on this hill, so no pic here. Just picture two lanes snaking their way down the hill and following the curves.

TIMING: Trackmate timing system, using RANDOM beep for dual-lane racing.

AMENITIES: Bottled water and Gatorade-type drinks; portable restroom, plus public restroom about 300 yards away; plenty of shade from the park's many trees; event-only pavilion with picnic tables and water pump 50 yards from top of the course.

PARKING: There's room for about 8-10 cars near the barricades at the top of the course, and there's plenty more room to park on South East Drive, just on the other side of Central Cross Drive.

SURFACE: Decent asphalt, good runout at the bottom--little or no footbraking required. The streets are very slightly crowned and not particularly steep, but you won't be hurtin' for speed.

1st place: At least $100.00
2nd place: At least $50.00
3rd place: At least $25.00

Custom trophies of some sort to top 3 finishers. Swag from various companies in the works. And maybe a surprise or two. Stay tuned...

LODGING:
Closest hotel: Water Tower Inn. This former hospital (yes, you read that right) is at Lafayette & I-44. Rates are about $75/night.
Next closest: Red Roof Inn Forest Park. Also about $75/night. Awaiting word on whether a group rate is available.
If you wanna go cheap(er), try Motel 6 in Fenton, about 12 miles away but a super-easy 15-20 minute drive on I-44 to get to the race location.

A small number of racers may be able to find a place to stay with one of the Daggers. If finding a place to crash will make the difference between coming and not coming, let us know, and we'll try to work something out.

WEATHER: In the event of the "R" word, we have three options:
1) Cancel the race (nooooooo!)
2) Race anyway (rain or shine), or
3) Invoke the "Dick Cheney contingency plan" and move the race to an "undisclosed location" somewhere out of the rain.

In the race organizers' opinion, Option #1 just totally sucks; Option #2 is pretty darn unworkable, so it's not REALLY an option. Which leaves us with Option #3: If we get dumped on, we will move the race to a parking garage downtown. It would result in a different race than at Tower Grove, but we should be able to pull it off. More details will be available in the "racer's packet" PDF that will be sent to all registered racers before the event.

If we get just a little rain, we may be able to dry the course with some help from Mother Nature--and a propane torch, as shown in this photo of the one and only Clifton Jennings:
Uncle Cliffy and torch--thanks!

OTHER STUFF:

Free BBQ at the Turkish Pavilion after Saturday's race. If you're lucky, you may get to witness something like this:
Jeff Goad, grilling after the Saturday outlaw race

What's a Turkish Pavilion, you ask? It's a big shelter about 50 yards from the top of the course.

A sampling of goodies from previous years:

2008 Trophies

What do we have in store for 2010, you ask? (What, new start ramps aren't enough?) :-) Actually, it's getting harder and harder to come up with clever ideas every year--but we'll try.
