OK I was born (sigh).
I seem to remember that NO ONE bought the damn things. They were so expesive. They were at least twice as expensive as split axle Gullwings. That tells you a lot doesn't it? :-) I have a feeling they were GBP35 ($50) each, twenty years ago! I don't know if my memory serves me well, but I think they neither reacted quickly or offer any great advantage over conventional trucks at the time...
Hey! let's face it, if they were any good, you'd be riding on trucks just like them right now!

On the subject of old trucks, does anybody remember those D-Beam trucks (or were they I-Beams)? I think they were made entirely out of nylon.
Still selling an early solid oak 31.5" G&S Stacy Peralta model in great condition with or without period Tracker half-tracks (non-removable king pin).

Hey!
I remember Stokers. They were tons of bucks back in the day. How about Pittsburg? Ever seen those? They look like a cross between the Gullwings and the modern exkates. I have a pict in an old Skateboard mag, I will try to post. Peter, you have lots of cool stuff, you make me jealouse!

You are a veritible gold-mine of 70's skateboard trivia.
The name Strokers still didn't ring a bell, but they look like the thing I was expecting. I remember they were pretty expensive. I never had any BTW.
What other strange stuff have you got?
What about other wheels and decks?
I had a "Benjiboard" one time, about a quarter (a fourth for the "English-English" challenged) of the board was kicktail, remember those?

I think the rack & pinion trucks you refer to could be Strokers?
Here are a couple of pictures I've scanned of mine, one shot from the front showing some of the weird linkages, and another shot from the bottom showing the spring mechanisms.
These trucks are available for a trade, but must be for something really special.
Really, really special.

Great photos.
So it was SIMS Bowlriders. I seem to remember they were very slow actually. Too wide.
I remember getting the Gullwings for Christmas (1978/9), along with my first Fibreflex (bowlrider, not slalom).
My memory of the Gullwings was clearly off.
There were some rack-and-pinion trucks around at the time though. Maybe they were just available in England. Anyone remember them?

Gullwing Split Axle Truck

 Here is a picture of a Gullwing Split Axle Truck from the 70's. This is a gold one, they were also available in silver.
"The Concrete Wave" book describes the truck as being designed by skater Mike Williams in the fall of 1975. A San Diego aerospace tooling company called HPG IV completed the design with him and made the trucks. They were first sold in January 1976.

All this talk of road riders reminds me there was something like a "Bowlrider" wheel. Way back in the 70's. They were something like 60mm, but 3inches wide!
Anyone remember them?

And who could forget the "rack-and-pinion" Gullwing trucks. (Gold colored)...

I have 2 near perfect Powell Bones wheels from the late 70s/early 80s. You will remember them, they were the ones which were white with the logo name on the inside edge of the wheel. Does anyone out there know where i can get another 2 from or does any one have any to sell.

A skate shop in Stockholm (Sweden) has got an old stock of skate stuff. Mostly eigthies stuff but if you live in Sweden, be sure to check it out.
From what I could see they had lots of wheels and decks for example: SIMS, Kryptonics, Powell Peralta Ratbones etc. Trucks: Venture, Gullwing etc. Decks: Alva, Duraflex, Elan etc.
I picked up a near mint purple aluminum Duraflex deck with purple Banzai trucks and really wide wheels, the back wheels were 75 mm wide and the front ones 55 mm!

I have a vintage G&S Stacy Peralta model. Its solid oak with
a little wedge of a kicktail. It has rubber grip tape, of
course. I have some period Tracker half-tracks on it but am
lacking proper wheels (RR4s or OJs perhaps). Anybody with
some early 70's wheels in great shape send me a note. Also,
anybody that's interested in buying this board (or trading)
let me know. Its in 99% perfect condition. I'm not sure how
long it is, probably around 33".

i have both videos. email me and we can trade copies if you have footage that i don't have. it'll save you the bucks. if not, i'm reasonable as far as prices go. the down hill motion is available
through black fly's for like $20-25 bucks. the anaheim tape is awesome. torger johnson, bruce logan, dave and steve hilton, bob mohr, & skip frye are on it. has slalom course as well as boys and girls "trick" competition. depends on how many generations this
internet guys tape is.

A guy I met on the internet offered to sell me two classic
longboard videos. One was called "Downhill motion", the
other was a recording of the 1965 World Skateboard
Championships in Anaheim, CA. The two tapes were about
1 1/2 hrs long. He started by asking 200$ for both, now
he just wants 75$. How much are these tapes worth? Are
they any good? Let me know asap.
