Bushings
On 1/16/2009 Aaron wrote in from United States  (98.112.nnn.nnn)

I setup my board recently with yellow barrel venoms on both top and bottom in the front, and blue Khiro bottom/yellow Khiro top in back. I haven't tested it too much at high speeds. Not sure if it matters but i run r2's with 50* baseplates. Is there anything that I could improve with the setup? Much help appreciated.

Soft, gooey bushings from roller-mania land
On 7/25/2008 PSR wrote in from United States  (75.68.nnn.nnn)

Daniel, as far as I'm able to tell, Laser (not the sk8bd 'lazer' of yore) and SGI bushings have no color/durometer code in Urethane bushings. Riddel does color-code them, but I've not listed those (they can be found, but rarely), as I've seen deviations in what the color means (worse, yes, than 'green' Stims).
Chicago seems to use no color scheme(?) but the rubber bushings are very old-school 70A-ish. The info in-around roller-rinks is sketchy, as the ads often show, 'Glitz' and 'bling' outweight actual factual numbers in the marketteer's mindset, and, well, yeah, with 30-year-old wheels, "bling" would be about all you've left to sell. G.M. Automobile Company has yet to notice this inconvient truth, but their Execs oughta look at Quad-Skates sales + tactics to get a clue!

are those quad bushings colors dependent on the durometer? Are they all one durometer?

I've made my own bushings before, but i was just looking into these.

might as well share since we're talking turny bushings...

Angled Risers for Paul
On 5/24/2008 Another Paul wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

Hmm, well, I'm a total slalom geek who positive wedges my front truck 10 to 15 degrees and negative wedges my back truck 5 to 10 degrees depending on the speed of the course, the trucks used, etc. Basically that means that the THIN end of each wedge riser is pointed toward the nose so the front steers quicker and leads the turn and the back is less turny and more solid through the turn(with harder bushings and tighter as well). By "positive", that means you are INCREASING the steepness of the pivot angle of the truck and "negative" means you are DECREASING/FLATTENING the steepness of the pivot angle of the truck.

I like the feel of that situation SOOOOOO much and my brain is now SOOOOO used to it, that I ride ALL of my boards like that, even my park/pool decks but I pretty much stick to 7 to 10 degrees positive on the front and 5 degrees negative on the back truck. I also ride wheelbases of 17" to 20" in parks/pools and so I believe it gives a bigger advantage(?) with those larger wheelbases where there is relatively more weight over the back truck and less weight over the front truck.

Also, a lot of downhill racers do something similar but usually less severe, especially on the front end, or more severe on the back end. That makes them a lot more stable at high speed.

A lot of longboards come pre-assembled with angled risers BOTH positive wedged front and back. That is OK for flat cruising and helps the overall manueverability but I would'nt reccommend having a positve wedged rear truck going down a hill at any speed greater than 20mph.

That's my 2 cents on the issue as a B-Class slalom racer and skater since 1974 so take that for whatever it's worth.

Good luck - Paul

On 4/25/2008 herbn wrote in from United States  (71.255.nnn.nnn)

i'll have to check on the oldman army bag but it sounds a bit large, but not necessarily long enough. I'd like to use my motorcycle to go downhilling I need to carry just one dh board, and maybe a pair of elbow pads, i wear a bit of the armour while riding the motorcycle, but i need to enclose the board entirely with NO chance of griptape ever touching paint.Slidergloves and elbow pads may actualy fit under the passenger seat.

'turny' bushings
On 3/7/2008 PSR wrote in from United States  (75.68.nnn.nnn)

Paul, I'm not sure what 'shape' of bushing you are looking for, nor quite which durometer...
But, that said, Khiro's stuff has been good enuff on most any board I ride, although I'll tweak stuff for Racing that requires some extra thought/cash/or Ebay searching to do 'just right'.
Just a thought, though; Rollerskates (Quads) use tall, springy bushings in a nice array of sizes and durometers, and they're available, though you gotta go Look and ask 'newie' questins that disguise that you skateboard in order to get good product. Nonetheless, SGI, Chicago, and Laser have some nifty 'deep-turn' bushings out there that've been utterly ignored by most skateboarders.

Old Man Army Skatebag
On 1/8/2008 Geezer-X wrote in from United States  (96.231.nnn.nnn)

I have a lot of business travel lined up and want to start bringing a couple setups and my pads along. I have the ubiquitous Alva bag, onto which I've repeatedly re-sewn the webbing handles in hotel rooms with hotel sewing kits.

I found that strangehouse.com (patronize Mr. Strange by all means. He's an OG skater, all around nice guy, stocks cool stuff, and offers superb service) had a few Old Man Army bags in stock. They're expensive, and always seem to be sold out.

I decided to do it. It arrived today, and I played with it after work. It easily holds the following:

38" fatboy w/ 155mm trucks/72mm wheels
36" Gravity pool board w/ 149s and 65mm wheels
33" Pavel w/ 100s and 70mm wheels
Big-ass Pro Designed knee and elbow pads
wrist gurds/slide gloves/Giro dirt jumping helmet
tools/bushing kit/hardware box/a few sets of wheels

It's got 2 zippers on the bottom so you can have a board "wheels out" so you can tow it by the shoulder strap. It's got 2 velcro-ed in storage bags, one in each end, several zipper pockets.

It's burly black cordura with sturdy zippers, and it has a silver plastic tarp lining so your heinous smelly pads don't make your car stinky.

I like bags. I carry a big messenger bag full of stuff every day, and just picked up a nice Crumpler messenger bag w/ laptop sleeve for travel. Nice bags make travel more pleasant, and if I always have my basic stuff packed to go I'll skate more since I don't have to rummage up all my crap and get it to the car to go to the hill or park.

If you're looking for a way to haul a small quiver, pads, tuning stuff, and a change or 2 of clothes, give the Old Man Army bag a look.
