Recent outages, the end is nigh?

The onslaught of freeloading data-slurping bots, crawlers, and spiders has only worsened since my last post on this subject (see below). Gone are the days when I could easily block the intruders which has resulted in them bringing down our ancient (Windows 2000) web server time and time again.
In addition, I now live 1,000 miles from where Ncdsa's server is located (in my company's Norcal data center) so I can no longer do hardware maintenance on the 15 year old 1U server. So, unless I can find an alternate Windows 2000 host somewhere -- or perhaps port the site up to the current Windows Server level -- Ncdsa.com's days are numbered.
After 27 years and a long-ago fade into internet oblivion, I suppose it's long overdue. I'll do what I can to keep the flame alight but if you find us off the air one day you'll at least know why.
Skate safe!

Certain search engine spiders have been crushing our old web server, of late, causing outages and the need for manual resets. I've started blocking their IP blocks en masse so hopefully I'll stop the one(s) that have been taking us down each day.

With sadness, and great respect, I want to let those in the Slalom community know that Paul Schwippert passed on this Dec. 30th. As someone who often dealt the parents of my students, I've seen few 'Dads' that backed their own so completely. Paul well understood what the oppurtunity was for Adam to be in competition, and gave the lad support, without crazy interference, that was remarkable. For those of you who know Adam, and is mother, Diane, well, keep them in your prayers, and maybe give them a ring, email, or card.

I was part of Kips Skateboard Team. We won the Surfs Up contest in 1964 and went on to the International Championships in 1965 at Anaheim. My buddy, Bob Mohr and I place midrange behind the Hobie guys but Bob went on to rip in freestyle. I am looking for a roster and results sheet from the contest. I came across it once a few years ago and now it had disappeared! I am writing a history how Bob and I formed Kips Skateboard Team. Any info?

Perhaps, or maybe forgotten, by and large. It's sad to see, but hey, things change, and skateboarding has always been an active, changing sport. I only hope this forum sticks around a bit longer, as my kids are getting to that age where they can surf the web for themselves. Meanwhile, I hope the CONTENT of this site isn't lost for the ages. Think of this, please; When Skateboarder Mag came out, it was The Only photo reference some of us had to what was going on in Skateboarding amongst a few thousand skaters in California; This got pushed out there World-Wide, and by '77, it was a world-wide phenom... This site, and others like it, go WAY out there, and reach to many, many more. Plus, this Site, in particular, has a History of it's own, where you can look back a decade, and see what's happened, the progression, and get a feel for how the sport has evolved. Furthermore, there's such good info on the basics here, far better thoughts than I've seen in most mags (Concrete Wave being an exception).
So, I ask this of sponsors; Stay committed, please. I ask this of readers; Post up, exchange ideas, thoughts, even ramblings.. And, of the hosts, please make back-up files something that future generations can find, regardless of whether this site continues online. I can think of few other on-line sites I've been to that have rewarded my life more than the connections from here; Thanks to all whom I've chatted with, and certainly big thanks to those I've skated with!!

Now hear this! It is decreed:
This year and every year after, The Broadway Bomb will always be on the 3rd Saturday in October. This way no one person will be responsible for it or have too much control over it.
THIS RACE NOW AND FOREVER BELONGS TO EVERYONE,
3rd Saturday of October Converge on 116th and Broadway at 12 Noon. The first rider to pass the bull at the start of Broadway wins.
No Skitching
If it’s rained out Saturday then the race will be on Sunday. If it rains Sunday then it will held the next Saturday then Sunday and so on.
To prevent the threat of exploitation for personal gain, this race should always remain free of charge.
By bringing equality to all participants I hope to bring back the sense of community which we seem to have lost.
Very truly yours Ian Nichols co creator of the Broadway Bomb.

Yo guys check out my invention Wheel Shields - a longboard accessory that keep you dry when riding over puddles, eliminate "wheel bite" and let you do new tricks by standing on top of your wheels.
We're taking orders to buy the mold needed for production! Search for "wheel shields" on kickstarter dot com!

After 15+ years with Network Solutions we have changed to a new domain name registrar. This may have made Ncdsa.com unavailable yesterday, Sept 11, for a period of a few hours while the global DNS servers updated.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I didn't think the XRumer-like bots would bother with a one-off forum like Ncdsa.com v1.0 but I was mistaken. The unfortunate result has been a flood of bot-generated comment spam that my existing filters are only catching about 90% of.
So I've taken the more drastic -- and hopefully temporary -- step of disallowing any post containing any link, period. This will be an inconvenience to members but hopefully a spam-free Ncdsa.com will be benefit enough to justify it while I devise a better Turing test than the Black Box Number.

From the webmaster...
After a 15-month hiatus, the original Ncdsa.com forum software has been brought out of retirement as its erstwhile replacement (Ncdsa 2.0 running on phpBB3) was rendered useless by comment spammers running xrumer. Interestingly, one of the best defenses against xrumer and its ilk is to have a non-standard forum that the bot authors don't bother hacking into.
All posts from Ncdsa.com 2.0 have been merged into this site's database, though the threaded organization was lost in the process since Ncdsa.com 1.0 never supported threads. I apologize for the inconvience this will no doubt cause.

Bot-generated comment spam from programs like xrumer has become so bad of late that I've temporarily resorted to requiring admin-approval of all new member registrations. I apologize for the inconvenience this puts on new members, but manually deleting dozens of pharma spams a day was not something I wanted to continue doing.
