*****The date posted is contingent on weather and other events/factors and thus may change so stay posted.*****
LIABILITY: This is an AT-YOUR-OWN-RISK ACTIVITY AND NOONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU OR YOUR INJURIES BUT YOU!!!
WEATHER: Spring weather is very unpredictable and often wet in this area, so investing a lot of $ in travel expenses isn't recommended to attend this event unless you are just as happy going to museums or the Portland indoor skatepark. If you're going to drive, just check the weather reports on the internet beforehand. The National Weather Service is generally pretty accurate and you can go to www.weather.gov and type in "Salem, OR".
BRING YOUR LEAF BLOWERS-Locals and CSA Regulars. READ THIS AGAIN, BRING YOUR LEAF BLOWERS. If you want to arrive early and help clean the hill, that will make everything happen sooner and will be most appreciated.
CONES: BRING YOUR CONES, I ONLY HAVE 68
BEGINNERS/NEWBIES: If you do not have any slalom-specific gear, bring your longboard or borrow one of the many "loaners" that the Cascade Slalom Association regulars will bring, that's why we bring them.
WHAT: This will be the 4TH!!!annual Spring Season Opening Event complete with a BBQ and Free Food! This will also be THE ABSOLUTE BESTEST OF THE BEST EVENTS FOR SLALOM BEGINNERS TO ATTEND. I will bring my dinky BBQ, sausages, burgers, buns, salad, condiments, plates, cups, H2O, and a handwashing station. Feel free to bring another BBQ if you want, extra food but not too much, we generally have plenty if people DO bring small contributions(such as one pack of hamburger and buns, or sausages and a pack of buns, bag of chips-n-dip, some fruit, drinks, etc).
OFFICIALITY: This is a "Drop-In Unscheduled Activity use of a Municipal Recreation Facility" courtesy of the Salem Parks and Recreation Dept and so, pick up any garbage, don't be obnoxious to other park users, etc. Everyone has been great about this in the past so THANKS! In the very unlikely event that we get kicked out(it has not happened at all in the 3 years of racing on this hill), bring your park boards and we can go to one of the nearby skateparks.
COURSES: Following the annual tradition, there will be two separate courses, a big open Giant Slalom course that beginners will have an easy time with and a more challenging General Slalom course for those who want more of a challenge.
RACING/TIMERS: We will likely go with open riding and "newbie clinic" and no timers/nonracing since already several requests have been made to NOT race. Last year we ended up without a timer and as a result the event was better for getting the beginner's equipment dialed-in and more riding was done overall. Only if enough people REALLY REALLY want a timer will we put one on one lane only.
HELMETS: Get real, it's a HILL- it can KILL you, or worse- leave you in a state where dead would be better. Remember Brian Rogers (R.I.P.) of KHIRO died as a hill-related helmetless head injury. Several other friends WITH helmets have taken spills slaloming/downhilling, broke their helmets and knocked unconscious as a result of slalom/hill mishaps. HELMETS WILL BE REQUIRED. You would be wise to bring all other pads, wristguards, slidegloves, jackets/armour, it's asphalt and you will be going faster than you can possibly run if you go down. By the way, NEVER try to run out a fall on a hill, it's the surest way to blow out your ankle, knee, tibia or femur. Let yourself go down and let your pads, slide gloves and jacket do what they're suppossed to do.
SCHWAG: Slalom related scwhag for the Newbies/beginners. It could be new stuff, it could be donated hand-me-downs, plus an extra bonus of questionable advice/hot air. We might draw names from a coffee can, we might have a board meeting for selection as to who is worthy(worthiness will be based on slalom stoke more than ability- if you're not real stoked on slalom, let another newbie WITH stoke who will USE and NEEDS the schwag have the schwag-Thanks, The Managment).
**NEW** SCHWAG DONATION SPONSORS!! 1) Khiro Bob is sending a care package of barrel bushings and maybe some wedges to get trucks dialed in - Thanks Bob!! 2) Seismic Dan is also sending a care package of trucks and wheels - Thanks Dan!! 3) Subsonic Scott is going to throw in a deck as well - Thanks Scott!! 4) Longboard Larry will be contributing a deck to the mix - Thanks Larry!! 5) Roe, as in Gary(he likes it when I call him that), is putting a deck in also - Thanks Gareth!! 6) Mrs and Mr Sk8kings are putting something(an Axe perhaps?)in the pile - Thanks Maria and Richy!! 7) Barry(he likes it when I call him that)-Chicken- Deck has put in 2 PocketPistol decks - Thanks Barrett!!
WHERE: Go to Oregon, USA. Get onto Interstate Five, otherwise known as "I-5". Go to Salem, Oregon. Go to the Exit to Highway 22 and GO WEST TOWARD THE PACIFIC OCEAN(if you are coming from the North, you will turn Right onto the off-ramp then right again, if you are coming from the South, you will turn right onto the off-ramp then Left). HWY 22 West Becomes Mission Blvd basically right away as soon as you get off of the off ramp and go WEST. Stay on it for about 2.5-ish miles and look for a big big park known as BUSH PARK to the LEFT or SOUTH AS IF YOU WERE LOOKING TOWARD THE BAJA OF CALIFORNIA. Look for the BIG TRACK STADIUM, you will see the BUTTERY SMOOTH SOAP BOX DERBY HILL right beside it. Park your vehicle, put on your helmet and pads and go slaloming, eating and blabbing.
LONG DISTANCE TRAVELLERS: Salem Motel 6 has the cheapest rates I could find, definately book ahead, they often fill up on weekends. If you fly, you can fly to Portland PDX airport, catch the HUT Shuttle to very near the Motel 6 and one of us CSA'ers can give you a lift to the race site, just post that you'll be needing a ride on the CSA forum to make arrangements/contacts.
Lowbudget'ers- Post on the CSA forum, you might get a CSA bed-n-breakfast if someone is in a position to lend a couch.
Salem Motel 6 North (503)371-8026 is on Hawthorne south of Market street about 1.5 blocks and one block west of I-5 near the intersection of I-5 and Market street. Restaraunts and other motels are nearby.
HUT Shuttle (541)753-4663 or (541)753-7831. The Hut shuttle is reserved seating only, they do not pick up "walk-ons". This will drop you off at the Lion Inn, and it's only about 2 blocks south to walk on Hawthorne to the Motel 6.

This was the funnest event I have ever put on. Thanks again to all the above mentioned schwag sponsors for the newbies, EVERY single piece of schwag was gobbled up with MUCH appreciation during a raffle(Bushings and wedge risers were free giveaways to all those newbies who needed them to dial-in their setups).
It was Awesome! Thanks to everyone who showed up and skated, helped setup and tear down, brought food and made it happen.
Timer data for best single raw time followed by average of best three runs - no cone penalties were counted. One thing for sure...everyone consistently had a GREAT TIME!!
