Westwood Ski and Sports Club and the International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) are pleased to announce the 2002 California Championship gravity racing series, with races at West LA College for skateboard, inline skate, classic luge (buttboard), street luge (both with and without pegs/booms), and gravity bikes. All races will count towards the IGSA world rankings, including slalom this year! There will be a variety of awards and prizes at each race, and at the end of the series there will be special series awards for the top point-getters.
Each of the dates will have racing for several sports and practice available at a reduced price for the sports not competing on that date. The events will take place rain or shine, but if it rains the schedules may change (for example a tight slalom might be postponed for rain, but luge would race in the rain).
Typical Schedule (note that qualifying and race times may vary): 9:00 Setup 10:00 Registration and practice starts 11:00 Downhill qualifying (luge, inline, bike; when applicable) 12:00 Start of races 3:30 Awards ceremony 4:00 End of permit time
The series dates are: May 5 WLAC IGSA/WWSC DH May 19 WLAC IGSA/WWSC DH Jun 30 WLAC WWSC/IGSA GS + tight slalom Jul 21 WLAC IGSA/WWSC DH Aug 18 WLAC WWSC/IGSA GS + tight slalom Sep 8 WLAC WWSC/IGSA GS + tight slalom Oct 6 WLAC WWSC/IGSA Skates and Gates Champs (10th annual!) Oct 27 WLAC IGSA/WWSC DH + tight slalom Nov 24 WLAC WWSC/IGSA GS + tight slalom Dec 8 WLAC IGSA/WWSC DH + tight slalom Notes: "DH" = luge, gravity bike, inline downhill, downhill skate "GS" = inline and skateboard fast slalom or giant slalom sports not listed may practice
Entry fees for club members are $25 for slalom and giant slalom competitors, $35 for downhill racers (luge, buttboard, downhill skate), and practice only is $10 for those not racing (free for paid racers). Joining Westwood Ski and Sports Club as a full member is encouraged, and entitles you to participate in ski and snowboard races and trips, water ski trips, parties, skating practices, equipment discounts, and more. Please bring your checkbook to become a full member ($35/year). Day memberships are available for $5/day, and are required for all riders who are not full members (i.e.: non-member fees are $30, $40, and $15). Juniors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and will be charged only a practice fee even if they race. Spectators are free. Also, the first few who come early to help with the street cleaning and setup in the morning (and then teardown and cleanup at the end) will receive a free race entry!
Manufacturers and shop owners, it's not too late to supply prizes for these races! You can even just show up with something to add to the prize pool, and bring your banner to hang. We'll be sure to mention you in upcoming announcements. Thanks to Turner Downhill for kicking things off with sets of their new Cambria skateboard wheels, and to Kryptonics and Hyper for inline wheel prizes and Bones Bearings for their long time support!
Protective gear: for slalom and giant slalom helmets, pads (elbow and knee), and hand protection (gloves and/or wrist guards) are required, and hip pads are recommended. Please, no short shorts or tank tops. For street luge, buttboard, downhill skating, and gravity bikes, IGSA equipment rules will be used (helmets, leathers, and leather gloves are required). We're building an equipment pool to loan to new riders and people who forget things, please donate your old gear, it may save someone a long trip home!
See you there!

California Slalom Series #5 Results (California Championship Series date 8) West LA College, California 10/27/02
The fifth slalom of the 2002 California Championship series (and eighth date of the 10 date series) at West LA College featured a super fast hybrid tight slalom that once again Richy took. The downhill course was on what is now called "course B", the second layout used this year in the parking lot. Again racers came from throughout California as well as out of state. George Merkert returned from Prague, and showed that his racing had only improved, taking the win by passing Scott in the straight and holding a clean line in the lower turns. At the end of the long day of racing there was a good crowd of satisfied racers.
