Organizer: Westwood Ski and Sports Club, IGSA

Entry Fee: $25
Contest Info: Westwood Ski and Sports Club and the International
Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) are pleased to announce
the 2002 California Championship gravity racing series,
with races at West LA College for skateboard, inline skate,
classic luge (buttboard), street luge (both with and without pegs/booms),
and gravity bikes. All races will count
towards the IGSA world rankings, including slalom this
year! There will be a variety of awards and prizes at each race, and
at the end of the series there will be special series
awards for the top point-getters.

Each of the dates will have racing for several sports and
practice available at a reduced price for the sports not
competing on that date. The events will take place rain
or shine, but if it rains the schedules may change (for
example a tight slalom might be postponed for rain, but
luge would race in the rain).

=============================================

The 2002 California Championship gravity racing series finale is
this Sunday, December 8, at West LA College. This one will have
racing for street luge (with and without booms/pegs), buttboard,
inline downhill, downhill skateboard, and gravity bikes on C Street,
with tight slalom racing on B Street. D Street will have giant slalom
practice, and there has been talk of getting the timer going there to
make it an end of season grudge match or dash for cash. After
the racing, there will be an end of season awards party at a nearby
restaurant, Dear John's (directions below). We'll have the medals
for the last races, plus special awards for the season title winners,
as well as beer, food, videos, and congratulations and condolences.

December 8 Schedule:
9:00 Setup
10:00 Registration and practice starts
12:00 Downhill qualifying (luge, inline, bike)
1:00 Downhill races
2:00 Tight slalom race (overlapping downhill race)
4:00 End of permit time
5:30 Season Awards Party

Entry fees for club members are $35 for downhill competitors, $25
for tight slalom competitors (free if racing downhill), practice only
is $10 for those not racing (free for paid racers). Joining Westwood
Ski and Sports Club as a full member is encouraged, and entitles
you to participate in ski and snowboard races and trips, water ski
trips, parties, skating practices, equipment discounts, and more.
Please bring your checkbook to become a full member ($35/year).
Day memberships are available for $5/day, and are required for all
riders who are not full members (i.e.: non-member fees are $40
and $15). Juniors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or
guardian, and will be charged only a practice fee even if they race.
Spectators are free. Also, the first few who come early to help with
the street cleaning and setup in the morning and teardown at the end
will receive a free race entry!

Manufacturers and shop owners, it's not too late to supply prizes
for these races! You can even just show up with something to
add to the prize pool, and bring your banner to hang. We'll be
sure to mention you in upcoming announcements.

Protective gear: for slalom and giant slalom helmets, pads
(elbow and knee), and hand protection (gloves and/or wrist
guards) are required, and hip pads are recommended. Please,
no short shorts or tank tops. For street luge, buttboard, gravity
bikes, and downhill inline and skateboard, IGSA equipment
rules will be used (helmets, leathers, and leather gloves are
required). We're building an equipment pool to loan to people
who forget things, please donate your old gear, it may save
someone a long trip home!

See you there!

Scott

The 2002 California Championship Series finals at
West LA College featured tight slalom racing as well as racing
for all the downhill sports with pleasant, sunny weather. The
field was the largest of the 10 race series, with strong
competition in every discipline. The downhill course was
another variation on the "A course", with the straight start,
followed by a right turn, a small chicane, and then a hard
left that took out a few racers before the finish line. The
course continued to produce tight racing, with many finishes
up in the air until the last second.

The racers packed a local restaurant for the awards party,
where the prizes included 2 sets of Kryptonic Classic K wheels
as sportsmanship awards for the day’s tight slalom (2 finishers
closest to the end of the field who were at the awards). The
grand prize was an Ed Economy Gravity super-longboard,
donated by Ed Economy himself, that went to Richy Carrasco
for taking the season title in skateboard giant slalom. Richy
also took home the Baku Torsion Trucks for the season tight
slalom title. The racers who made podiums got medals, and
season title winners (California Champions) received nice
glass plaques. Finally a batch of T shirts from Sasquatch
Skateboards and Pure Guts were handed out. After a great
season of racing, everyone is looking forward to more in 2003!
