Wood Species such as Maple and Birch
On 6/17/2009 Paul(skiivoxg) Howard wrote in from (173.8.nnn.nnn)

As a bowmaker of many bows and many woods, I will have to totally back-up Herbn and state that Rock Maple(a.k.a. -sugar maple, eastern hard rock maple) is NOT the same wood/tree as Russian Birch. Not only are they not related, the compression/tension properties and densities are very different. I don't know who is claiming that the 2 species are the same but they are not. That's my 2 cents. -P

Gravity Brad Edwards 40" model
On 5/21/2009 Paul Howard wrote in from (173.8.nnn.nnn)

I have to say I was surprized about how stiff and solid this deck for being only 7 ply maple and 40" long with a 21"-22"-ish wheelbase. I thought I would have to fiberglass it since I really REALLY like the rock solid stiffness of my old (with the black, grey, green and white logos) Comet Proflex(NOflex) Parkrider 36" deck. For all-wood, and a longer wheelbase, the Bradboard is pretty stiff. Maybe I'll fiberglass over the tail and rear truck at some point but I don't feel compelled. I sorta wish they hadn't put the wheel wells in the back just for more strength but at this point I can't complain after riding it for about 30 minutes on all sorts of transition sizes at the skatepark.

Rocker - It has rocker, which is really nice for holding the foot.

That's my 2 Cents - Paul

Hey everyone... if anyone is interested in getting a board with original, one and only graphics done by hand, I hope you'll check out our site; www.birdplane.net. Our boards are 10 ply rock maple, 9" wide, 46" long. We put hours of time and thought into each deck and we'd love to hear any comments from other skaters and we'd also love to make a board for you!

I've contacted this "Consumer" twice, last Saturday, and Monday, through SF PM's, since he posted here and on SF with this story. I offered direct contact information to either pursue status of the order, or else a refund in full.

No response.

Can't help those who can't help themselves.

One more thing.............
On 12/11/2008 The same Very Biased Slalom racer named Pauliwog wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

........Not that this is relevant to the 'time of completion' topic but I and a lot of us do have to give Gareth Roe credit for being one of the few slalom deck makers (and very high quality/performance at the time) in the early days of the rebirth of slalom and helped carry us through the first few years to the present. But still, I have to put a biased plug again to THINK SUBSONICSKATEBOARDS, tell Scott Paul sent 'ya. Thanks -P

Consumer for Justice, are you going to contact me?
On 12/6/2008 peters wrote in from United States  (67.183.nnn.nnn)

"Consumer For Justice" writes: "In this thread, the forum moderator, a close friend of Gareth's, assures the members of the forum that policies and procedures have changed at Roe. He assures a turn around time of no more than 4-8 weeks, with few exceptions. This forum does a great job of establishing a timeline for the efficiency of Roe. At this time the outstanding orders for a Roe board is approximately 6 months. Nowhere near the 4-8 weeks listed on pavedwave.org."

The forum moderator is me, James Peters.

And that information was posted this summer when boards literally made it into people's hands in 4--8 week periods. I don't "lie" on my forum. And I've facilitated a lot of communication for people on their dealings with Gareth.

Also, the 6-months thing is simply wrong. I just got a mail from a guy who received his board Monday, 12-1-08. His board was ordered mid-July. So that took 4.5 months, and that was the longest order in the last half year.

There have been some orders that have gone for months, and I explain on that forum how things went south for Gareth's press -- and that's where I no longer have any control or can really assist anyone, other than relay what Gareth tells me in bits and pieces.

I'm no apologist for Roe. He's just a good friend, since around 2001, and to anyone who's done their research, yes, the response time is spotty. Buyer beware. I have said this as well, many times over. But if you're trying to deal with him solo and not contacting me to help yourself out, then you're asking for frustration, and I've communicated that as well.

Have you ever contacted me by email or PM? Since you posted this on Silverfish as well, I PM'd you through that forum this morning, and haven't yet heard back from you.

This is off my pavedwave forum as well:

"All I'm going to say in closing is this: Look, if anyone for any reason gets fed up waiting, go ahead and ask for a refund. Don't go bagging on multiple forums lamenting about your wait. The only guy I know right now who has waited since July, which I consider way too long, is first on the list and mentioned above. Gareth is a hardworking guy who does this practically singlehandedly, he skips events he's passionate about like last week's Salem slalom races sometimes, just to make sure this stuff stays on track, AND maintains a full time day job as a mucky-muck in his field -- and I'm doing everything I can right here in this forum to help him spread the most up to date information about what's going on. So if you would rather own a Sector 9 or Loaded, then go ahead, get your refund, and pick one up right now from your local distributor. I have no stake in this other than wanting to share the first, and in my opinion best, classic LDP board which Gareth and I created years ago which I know will stand the test of time.

For those who can wait a little longer for a custom board build, I will continue to update here!"

...and btw, Paulskiwog's recommendation for Subsonic is spot-on.

A VERY biased opinion for Consumer for Justice or Anyone else.
On 12/6/2008 A slalomer named Pauliwog wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

..........May I suggest WWW.SUBSONICSKATEBOARDS.COM? I think you'll be pleased. I'm fond of my old Roe decks, they're well made, ride nicely, and Gareth IS a busy and good guy, I like the guy too, but if I got dropped from the Subsonic Team, I'd still race and ride on Subsonic for quality, feel, pretty quick delivery(especially since they're made one at a time, custom or stock shapes), choice of concaves, camber if you want it, kicktail/heel-lift -2 options, drops, dropthrough mounting patterns, materials(All wood or wood-core with options of carbon, triaxial fiberglass, combinations), plus a variety of trucks, wheels, wedges, and other doo-dads to make completes if desired. Plus I'm biased by the whole good vibe of the team I'm on, even our token crabby-dude puts me in a good mood. OK, enough of my rant. That's my 2 Cents - Paul

The Roe Racing Customer Service Plan
On 12/5/2008 Consumer For Justice wrote in from United States  (208.72.nnn.nnn)

Customer Service: It's what fuels an economy. Today's economy is filled with small businesses. But what happens when those small businesses start to lax on customer service? You get angry customers. I am an angry, unsatisfied customer. And I am not alone.

I placed an order for my custom Roe longboard a few months ago, expecting it to be delivered in a timely fashion. Days ticked into weeks, and weeks rolled into months. No contact from the builder himself, Gareth Roe, despite my several e-mails. I've heard of this happening before, so I decided to do my research.

I've got five examples of "shoddy at best" customer service practices, and my opinions on them. Here is the first;

This is from the ISSA forum, for slalom skateboards, circa November 2005.

As you can see, the OP was quite dissatisfied on learning about the 8-10 week turnaround. I know these are custom longboards, hand built, and of very sound craftsmanship. 8 to 10 weeks is a good amount of time, But knowing the current turnaround time, certain buyers would make a more informed decision to spend a good amount of money on a board before buying it.

My next example is also from the Silverfish Forum, circa June 2007.

In this thread, multiple customers express thier frustrations with Roe, with the longest wait being almost four months. In this thread, Gareth Roe comes out to apologise, and assure his customers they will indeed get thier boards. His lengthy explenation on why his boards take so long to make, an apology on underestimating his turn around times, but still offers no current turnaround time on current orders. His response does nothing more than offer a short period of doubt that he has not forgotten about his most important priority, the customer.

My next example is from the forum Silverfish Longboarding, circa Febuary 2008. The buyer in question recived his board in a timely manner, but many good examples of Roe's customer service plan. The custom longboard builder should always be informative to the customer. Good customer service starts with answering questions in a timely manner, notifying customers of delays and changes, or even acknowledging customer orders. Roe doesn't do this for everyone. Sure, he does it for some, but not for others. Consistency is good for a business.

My last example is from the forum Pavedwave.org, a current and ongoing thread, dedicated to a second party attempt to track the Roe customer orders for a specific model from Roe's line of products.

In this thread, the forum moderator, a close friend of Gareth's, assures the members of the forum that policies and procedures have changed at Roe. He assures a turn around time of no more than 4-8 weeks, with few exceptions. This forum does a great job of establishing a timeline for the efficiency of Roe. At this time the outstanding orders for a Roe board is approximately 6 months. Nowhere near the 4-8 weeks listed on pavedwave.org. Things at Roe must be extremely busy, to be stuck with a back log like that.

It is in my opinion, Roe does not satisfy even the most basic of customer service needs. The product delivery time is never consistent, and customer to builder communication leaves a customer wanting more. The wonderful turnaround time of 4 to 8 weeks? It's never been consistent, just as Roe has proven time and time before.

Sure, custom building takes time, but it also takes dedication, consistency, good customer service, and an overall respect for customers. Roe boards are top of the line. If you know someone who rides a Roe custom, ask them how they like it, and they will tell you all about it. If you want a top of the line, performance board, go ahead and get one. But be prepaired to get one several months after you pay for it, with little to no customer service.

custom graphics
On 10/14/2008 Jake in Monterey wrote in from United States  (75.244.nnn.nnn)

does anybody know the best way to go about getting some custom graphics done? I've noticed some companies pitching the fact that certain artists are doing some work for them (s9/seismic at least). would I need to custom order a blank and then get that to the artist? if so, i wouldn't want to shell out for sweet stained blanks and them cover it up (that would be a shame to cover up a soul carver) do companies offer just plain old blanks? any artist/custom info greatly appreciated.

Reissue Decks / Wheels

Probably because the most memorable decks from Sims and Kryptonics couldn't be replicated by simply cutting a blank to the right shape and sticking on a repro graphic. That said, if they were to reissue a 30x9 Superply, complete with wheelwells but with a nice concave, i'd buy it.

Is there a reason why Tom Sims or the guys at Kryptonics have not released any reissues of the classic decks or wheels? As we all know the current Alva, G&S, and Z-Flex reissues as well as the new BDS and SMA decks move like hot cakes. Boy I would sure love to feel a new Sims Deck with Snakes or old style C65 Kryptonics.
