A little history lesson;

No country lost as great a proportion of its population in world war I than the French: 1,400,000 men were killed outright,647,000 missing presumed dead, two million were wounded. A million of the wounded had debilitating injuries, and could never work again. They were a lost generation, and a living reminder to others of what war really meant. France has still not replaced those she lost in battle by 1939 but bravely fought on and by 1945 casualty figures were 2,000,000 civilians and army personnel dead,182,000 missing presumed dead and 138,000 wounded. United States losses for the whole of WWII were 300,000. During the American war of independance France gave American rebels 10,000 tons of gunpowder, and 6,000 experienced troops to harass the British.

When asked by the American press where he would like American forces to be positioned in respect to British positions in North Africa Colonel Henry Parks said;

"I have forwarded the Fieldmarshall my concerns over the positioning of American forces....i would dearly like them as far away from myself and my troops as possible"

Henry Parks lost both his brothers to American friendly fire during WWII.

Ah, the French.

We offered kindly to donate them Calais
And all they gave us back was the bidet
And now they won't let us go on holiday
They bottle bath-water [or 7 Up] and call it Perrier
They eat poor froggie's legs then throw the rest away
They even like the look of Johnny Holliday
They eat raw garlic and invented croquet
They think the height of chic is John Paul Gautier
That's why I hate the French, mmm,
That's why I hate the French

They all wear berets and they're all called Jacques,
They even steal from us the words they lack
Le weekend, Le Camping and cul de sac
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French.

They claim their films are the best we've ever had
Well I suppose Emmannuelle wasn't bad
All their songs sound more or less the same
La la la la la la la la.........je t'aime
Charles Aznavour is always so depressed
Wouldn't you be if oui oui meant yes?

Sacha Distel has raindrops falling on his head
I wonder if Jean Paul Sartre knows he is dead
What I resent is that they're so good in bed
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French.

They bake their bread in such a naughty shape
They brag about their wine and worship the grape
They criticise our food but then they eat crepe
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French.

And now they started coming here in droves
French cigarettes, French letters and French clothes
For breakfast they have croissant or French toast
And there's always some French letters in the post
I'm sick and tired of eating all this brie
A day trip to Boulougne is fine by me
And I'll be buggered if I go to gay Paris.

They're pretty cocky 'bout their games in the dark
They think with girls they light a special spark
But look what the bastards did to Joan of Arc
That's why I hate the French, oh,
That's why I hate the French, mmm,
That's why I hate the French.

K-LEE, this guest book is the problem. There is no strict topic here so everything is allowed. I wasn't here when this forum was created so I don't know the reason for this forum but it seems like this is the "safety valve" of NCDSA.

So if you don't want to read about politics, don't read the guest book. :-)

Maybe we need to start a "Politics" forum so it will stay off all the other skate related forums. On second thought, maybe not. Politics are everywhere these days, and it's the last thing on my mind when I come to NCDSA, don't need any reminders either.

Here`s one for ya Cabbage...

After graduating from high school in `77, I hitchhiked out to CAL. This was my 2nd trip out there. First time was summer trip in `76. Anyhoos, back to the `77 story, I first landed at The Hole in the Wall beach. Actually it was a hole in the fence. This was a place where you could crash on the beach and the cops wouldn`t bother you. My skateboard has not yet arrived and my cash was sent up to cousins at Bolinas.

After catching up some much needed sleep after a 3 day, no sleep, road trip, I headed down to where I was going to meet my brother and friend at San Clemente State Park. They were supposed to be there before me as they left in the micro bus with all our surf boards on top. Well, VW blew a head gasket in Texas and they were delayed.

Anyhoos, I met some locals at Trestles and spent the next few days just down the street from the local beach public access at San Clemente. Every morn I skated down the hill on my Sims oak board with Bennetts and RR 4s. How or why I took that deck with me I can`t remember cause I had a FF Bowlrider and Taperkick back home.

Anyhoos, I did get to skate some pools up in San Juan Capistrano and one memorable trip to LA (broken nose and later met sid).

The one thing I keep thinking about was I was so close to the slalom/downhill scene in La Costa and I didn`t even know it exsisted. Man, i would loved to hit those hills in the day. I guess I was more focused on waves and pools.

Ask GBJ what my expression was when he picked me up in DC 2001... eyes wide open and pupils aglow... HILLS... AAAARRGHHH!!! (Homer-esque`)

Skate more, post less...

I haven't read the full resolution, Jonnyx. If we did veto it, I would assume it's because there were clauses attached that we found unacceptable. Sure, it was a resolution to condemn Saddam, (meaning nothing,) but buried in the fine print was a motion to disband Israel and give the Holy Land back to Arafat and his minions. (Or something to that affect.)

Yes, the UN does those sort of things . . . regularly. Again, you say the US vetoed the resolution condemning Saddam Hussein's use of gas against the Kurds. My response is:

a. I haven't read the ENTIRE resolution
b. I can guarantee you that if I had to pick between George Schultz and Jean Kirkpatrick's judgement and yours, I would probably go with George and Jean.

Also, don't get too excited: I am neither motivated nor interested in digging up the UN resolution condekning Saddam Hussein's use of gas against his own people. Quite honestly, I can say I am neither motivated to interested in anything propogated by the United Nations. . . except maybe a "For Sale" sign that shows they're leaving the East Side of Manhattan.

Oh, Jonnyx, Khomeini was in exile in Paris for 20 years. His message of hate and Jihad was broadcast throughout the mulsim world long before the fall of the Shah and his acquisition of power. The point is that you said George Bush, while head of the CIA during the Reagan administration, made the word popular. I said you're full of steak and kidney pie and have no clue as to what you're talking about.

As you like to tell Arab on a regular basis, "don't change the subject."

hi wes i can assure you that "jihad" does indeed mean a "struggle" or "worthwile struggle". as for tracing it to khomeini, thats just a joke, it was in use in afghanistan and the southern states of the then Soviet Union long before. when i worked picking grapes with a bunch of algerian guys they used to describe each day at work as a jihad, with no intention of hurting anyone or taking over anything.

oh yeah did you know that the USA under Reagan vetoed a UN resolution condemning Saddam Hussein for his gas attacks on his own population? wes please comment.

First of all, George H Bush (he isn't a "Sr." and his son GWB isn't a "Jr."), was head of the CIA from 1976 to 1977 during Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter's terms. He was Vice President during the Reagan years.

Secondly, the term "Jihad" in contemporary Western and Middle Eastern culture can probably be traced directly to the mouth of the Ayatollah Khomeini. During his exile in Paris he promised a "Islamic Jihad" that would sweep the world and bring an Islamic paradise to everyone. Upon returing to Teheran in 1979 (during Jimmy Carter's term,) he reiterated his threat to any news camera that would focus on him.

When the Islamic terrorists stormed the American Embassy in Teheran (don't try and tell me they were "students,") they promised this was the first step in bringing "Jihad to the Great Satan, the United States."

All of this was long before Reagan was ever President or Bush was ever Vice President. Oh, and don't forget: Reagan was sworn in at 11:00 AM on 1/21/81. The hostages left Teheran about two hours later. Don't try and convince me that force and the threat of force doesn't work when dealing with terrorists. So much for the strength of "Jihad" when dealing with the Great Capitalist Satan.

Got anymore "facts" Johnnyx, or are you done for the day?

Hi kids
Did you know that it was George Bush Sr. who, as head of the CIA under Reagan, took the decision to repopularise the concept of jihad as holy war after almost 800 years outside popular islamic thought? From the times of richard the lionheart until the 1980s jihad meant "worthwile struggle" for all but the most rabid of fundamentalists.
oh yeah did you know that the USA under Reagan vetoed a UN resolution condemning Saddam Hussein for his gas attacks on his own population?
oh yeah im glad arab is enjoying his freedom fries, personally i think its a bit premature when they havnt even stopped fighting yet. i suppose it lets the armchair warriors feel like they are playing a part while sat in front of CNN bulking up.
