How the hell do these things work. They are able to carve bloody tight and look so smooth. I can't understand how they are mounted in front of the board and how the board gets so much movement ???? Can anyone inform me on the workings of these amazing trucks.

I'll give the exact opposite answer that TC just gave. I'd have to say the Randal IIs are the best. I like exKates quite a bit, but I'd have to say that I like RIIs more. I don't ride new school, but I do ride parks fairly often. Don't get me wrong, I think they perform well in any situation I ride in, not just parks. RIIs give you a stable predictable feel, but still outperform, by a lot, any conventional trucks. True you can't turn a six foot circle on a 48" board, but I never found a need to do so (except when I had just got my exkates and was seeing if the really would do that, and yes the did).
For my style of riding, they turn as well as I ever need them to. And if I ever need to adjust them, all I have to do is loosen or tighten the kingpin like on conventional trucks. I don't have to go out and buy a new set of bushings. Even if Exkates came with all of the different bushings, which they don't, you still have to disassemble them to change the bushings. Personally, a lot of it is going to have to do with your own personal taste and riding style. Me, I'll take the Randal IIs.

Best trucks in the world? I'd have to say exkates. I like the R-II's quite a bit, but for fluid carving and good downhilling the exkates are the best. I have 3 sets of 101's with red (2nd hardest) bushings. Want to get the 201's with the green bushings... If you're into parks and new school, I'd say get the Randall's...otherwise exkates get the nod.

Hey these are great trucks, I have them one of my wider longboards,

Rollerskate trucks dominate for the same reason that a lot inferior products do. VHS over Betamax. Windows over Linux and Mac OS. Surfboard shaped skateboards over boards shaped for the foot and not water.

I just put R-IIs on my new Gravity 40' comp deck that I plan to ride at my local skatepark. I thought the deck may be a little too short to get the full benefit of the R-II architecture, but I was wrong. The board turns better, carves better, tricks better: it's just better all around. A clear improvement in performance over the Indie 146's that I previously had on the board. So R-II's work great on "shortboards" too.

Which brings up an interesting question... WHY do the rollerskate style vertical kingpin trucks dominate the market. Is it a new-school thing? somebody suggested to me once that it was because they were more durable in impact landings (from tricks and stuff). Does anyone have any idea?

Gullwing screwed up ages ago when they abandoned their original concept in truck design. It took after the Speed Spring design from the 70's, a king pin going through the back of the hanger. Variflex began with it. Radikal did it. They all turned better than your roller skate trucks that still dominate the market (lord knows why). The only manufacturer that stuck it out are Randalls.

If these are the black base/white hanger things that come with flexdex, they stink. They barely turn at all and take a long time to break in. Stick with R II'S if you want an adjustable truck that you can still grind or use in vert/park situations and that can rip it up on long carves and high speeds.

Sorry people, I made a little mistake. The width of the trucks (hanger width not including axles) is 135, 146, and 157, not 135, 145, and 157. Just to add one more little bit of info. for those who don't allready know, no matter which springs you have installed in the trucks, you can tighten them and loosen them to vary the tightness of the trucks. The biggest plus of Seismic versus Exkates is that they're much more stable so they don't get wobbles that easily if at all, yet they still turn fast enough to give you the performance you're looking for, and best of all, literally spring back into position being centered. You'll never know until you try them yourself. Ride somebody else's if you have to but at least give them a try and then make up your mind from there. Peace out, I'm outta' here.
