Hey herbn, If you are willing... I would be willing to send you a few bucks to color copy the artical... I understand that you are a student who has an extremely cheap dad (I know how that goes, I too am a cheap dad)and I am sure that your funds are near and dear (been there too... actually I have never left there)
So shoot me an e-mail and let me know... thanks, HR

Skateboarder Interview

Herbn/Hugh, If you photocopy the mag, you might want to do color photocopies of any pages with color pictures. The quality isn't great but is good enough to do web graphics. All of the pix from "The Cult of the Longboarder" article on nosewheelie.com were scanned from color photocopies of the original article. It's a bit more expensive but worth it.
Good luck,
Chris

Herbn Never heard of the super 8, but I would love to see some pix of it. Never heard of the custom trackers either. They would be tricky to construct. If you have some pictures or other info please let me know. The board may have been a pre-simms garage built.
I hear that Lonnie Toft is making snow boards now. Does anyone know how to get ahold of him? Thanks, HR

Every hear of these, I think lonnie toft mentioned them in his Skateboarder inter veiw, its an 8 wheeled longboard. Also Toft mentioned cutting or having custom midtracks that were halftracks on the inside, mids outside.

you all may have seen my 8 wheeler on hugh308 and I must say after22/23 years it still gets me going.I rode a couple of years at skatercross 7 wheels outor rollon tops on the 4th bowl.it takes awhile toget the hang and its not for girly men.you must constantly walk the board, wich i learned early on longboards.

8 wheelers

Jonas, The simms/toft 8-wheelers are extremly rare. I believe that they were only mfg'd for one short production run in the late 70's. Chances are that you will not find one for sale at any reasonable price. Expect to pay more than 1500 for one in good shape... they are quite collectable and almost no one has them. There are other types out there, but the simms/toft seems to be the most desired by collectors.
Construction techiniques were ahead of their time with the use of ply, concave and kick-tail. The board was not intended as a flat-land ride. They are difficult to master but ride fairly well on vertical surfaces. It is true that they are an oddity, but they were an inovation and an important turning point in skating history.
If you ever get a chance to ride one you will come away with the apperication of the skill level of Lonnie Toft, who was a master on this board and could make it perform as well as a 4 wheeler.
The trucks that were most common on these boards were the half tracks... good luck finding those too. It took two years of searching to find 4 of them. There are some guys in the UK who claim to have a bunch of the in un-used condition, but I am skeptical.
So keep in mind that the 8-wheeler was not the be-all to end-all in board design, but it was an important development in deck design. HR
(by the way, chris s, contact me about that board if you read this)

I built one, once using Bennetts and roadrider 4's they kind of suck you have to step from side to side because the board will only turn towards the direction your standing on maybe I didn't give it much of a chance but they were just real clumsy, rarety, a lot of shops had them because they were so unusual, but they probabely stayed in the shop and were eventually scraped to build two regular boards.

This deck I got recently from my local shop's "basement".It's so ugly you gotta love it(I do)!11" wide with plaid graphics. One other interesting thing beside the semi-glass construction is three alluminum rivets around the nose. I want to know more about the Lonnie Toft 8-wheelers. How rare are they and does anyone know of people willing to sell? What was the thinking behind running quad trucks and can anyone tell what they rode like?
