Hugh, 4 Solid days of fighting virus attacks. Just when I thought the Nimda virus on my server was under control, my wife's PC caught the Fun Love virus and spread it to 5 of 6 PCs on the LAN. If I didn't give you lathes pics, sorry. I poke my periscope up here in the NCDSA about 1 min instead of 1 hour lately.
I was thinking of a new name for Buttboarding even though it already has one, Classic Luge. Both those names are pretty bad. One is too descriptive and other is vague.
How about Lugeboarding?

Buttboarding has, has always had, only one problem... the name! Any name with "butt" in it will be thought of as silly!
Come on Darren! Think of some sort of "extreme" name! You to CC... (oh yeah, I'm not talking to you... never got info back on your lathe technique... so I guess I'll have to start a new little page... CC slam or something like that! ;) ) HR

Mario, As it turns out, the trucks that we use today don't require a wheelbase any longer than it is. We get our boards up to 70mph without any stability problems. The area out in front of the front truck acts as a leg support. It also helps to put more weight on the front truck which aids instability at speed. When you first start this as a sport, your abs and neck muscles get a tremendous amount of strain supporting the weight of your legs and head with a helmet on it.
Buttboarding is like bodysurfing where streetluge is like riding a little car down a hill. Your body kind of hangs over the edges of the board to keep the CG low. You really feel as if this board is a part of you. Your shoulder blades hug the thin end of the board in the straights but then you grab the hand rails on the sides of the board and swing your legs over in the opposite direction of the turn and dip your shoulders way off to the inside.
Some guys in Europe have their trucks all the way up in front (Gerhard Lanz) but it's kind of a dying style.

I'm a buttboarder from way back, but I've never used a purpose-built buttboard. When I was a kid, the safest way to get down the steepest hills was to sit. That way I could use my feet for braking. As I got a little older and better, I found that I could transfer from standing to sitting as long as I did it very smoothly.
This turned out to be the fastest way down a hill. I'd push like hell to get going fast, sit for the corners and the brakes, and then I'd stand up again and push on the flats if I needed to. All this on a 10x30 old-school pig board with trackers and 60mm wheels.
Now, I wonder how good these specialized butt boards are, and what advatages they have. I'm tempted to build one, but I can't imagine that I'll go that much faster than on my 48" carving deck. What are the big advantages to the buttboard? And why not push the front truck all the way towards the nose and get a longer wheelbase?

I love the NCDSA message boards. And it's really great to see one dedicated to Buttboarding.
I think the future of "Laydown Skateboarding" comes from those who love and understand downhill skateboarding. In all it's formats. That is what I have noticed that characterizes the NCDSA group.
Buttboarding will continue to grow and eventually reach some mainstream media fame. In the meantime, I hope we all have as much fun as possible. Buttboarding *IS* the fun alternative to Street Luge, and I have to tell you , the top pros (Rogers, etc) spend more time Buttboarding than Street Luging.
If you love standing up, laydown will teach you even more about downhill skateboard performance. Just as the fastest Street Lugers have come from Buttboarding,so too I believe will come the fastest Speedboarders and Slalom Racers.
I know I am currently in desperate need of updating the www.Buttboarding.com site. (Too much racing the last few months.)
But if you haven't seen it, there are and will continue to be many valuable resources for those interested. Also please email me if you have a burning suggestion of what I can add that you need to get "Up and Running."
Pictures are welcome are requested for the "Gallery."

Joseph, You can only "flip" Randal hangers, not Indys oe Tracker, etc.
On a Lott Classic setup, both the front and back truck are wedged with the fat ends toward the rear. This ADDS steering to the front and REMOVES steering from the rear. The front hanger is flipped over so that the "180" stamp can no longer be seen. This stablizes the extremely fast turning front truck. The back hanger is left alone.
Duane, The Randal II (R-II) is converted into an R-IIB by putting in a grade 8 (or better) kingpin with the locknut outwardly exposed and using fully cylindrical cushions (as opposed to conical) and the appropriate retaining washers.

stupid question but what do you mean by flipped hangers? is the long thing with the wheels and bearings on it the hanger? how do I do this and will it work with indy 215's? or should i get r 2's from randall and flip them (big price differences) how does this affect riding/stability? are randall 2's better by far than indy's?

just set up my buttboard recently, the deck is @$60 from hakka sports, got concave, being learning riding techniques from marc johnson in san jose, using RII's with flipped hangers. gonna put some foam padding and rails on it this week. Any riders interested in the bay area, email me, we ride southbay, dinousaur point, santa teresa, etc.
longboarders, get a buttboard, it's fun!

What's the difference between the RII-B buttboard trucks and the regular R-II ? From the pictures on Landluge, it looks like the kingpin is flipped, and the bushings and washers have been changed. Maybe Randal reads this site. Any other differences ? Having all the goodies laying around including the R-II which I don't even use, it suddenly occurs to me I could make one of these things for $0.00

Building a Buttboard
My 13 step plan...
1. Start with a piece of 5/8" marine grade plywood (11 or 13 ply birch) in a 12" x 48" shape.
2. Scribe a centerline down the length of the board. (6" off one of the long edges)
3. Measure 24" to 26" from one end and mark. This end will be the front.
4. Scribe a line perpendicular to the 1st line at the 24" or 26" line you made in step 3.
5. At the rear end, measure 2.5" or 3" off the centerline to each side and mark.
6. Scribe a line from the mid point line (Step 4) where it meets the long edges to the mark in step 5.
7. Scribe a 6" radius line on the front of the board from the centerline. Use a point 6" back from the front to center the radius.
8. Scribe the radius of your liking in the vertex created in step 6.
9. Measure .75" to 1" from the rear along the center line and mark. This will be where the rear holes for the rear truck go.
10. Measure 10" to 11" from the front of the board along the centerline and mark. This is where the front holes of the front truck will be located.
11. Mark and drill holes for your trucks. I recommend Randal RII-B trucks.
12. Cut out following your scribed lines. Your shape should be similar to this:
13. Mount the trucks, slap on some 70mm wheels, leather up and bomb away!
NOTE: You may want to start with wedge pads in the front and rear. Mount them with the skinny end to the front on both the front and rear. This will make the handling a little slower.

For those not already in the know, a buttboard is really its own thing. It is an awesome beast that can rocket you over 70mph with ease. Other streetlugers will agree with me that they are more fun to ride in packs because you can get really tight without hooking pegs and tails. You can pass your legs over the other guys helmet or just kick him in the head. Friendly shoves and mooch bumping are all a part of the fun. In serious racing these babies hold their own. Ones to watch include Darren Lott, Dave Rogers, Gerhard Lanz and Tom Mason.
Here are the maximums. 11 pounds, 48" x 12" board, 70mm wheels (2), Trucks with 12" axles (2), no mini-miser or ceramic bearings. No dropped boards or drop-through trucks. Until something better comes along, a homemade board with R-IIs and blue 70mm Kryptos is good enough to win a race on.
Do this before even considering buying a luge. A buttboard is not a second class citizen. At races you get more time on the hill when you buttboard too!

Kryptonic classic k 76mm wheels good? (not entering actual comp so dont need to meet restrictions) and some red bones bearings.

To those used to riding stand-up only you should try buttboarding at least once... It's freaky how fast you seem to accelerate when you're down at wheel level and not presenting so much wind resistance!

I never owned a "real Luge" I started butt boarding in 1975 in Central Park NYC. It was hte only way we could beat Nelson Vales (former Olympic Bicycle sprint silver medalist) Nelson or "Tea-ba" as he prefered to be called (short for T-bar , a skate key, thoug hte media changed it to Cheeta) would bomb on a flexy 6 foot long redwood long board and I would ride my 48" buttboard after him. eventually beating him. Tea-ba then decided to buttboard, except he went prone. He fell at about 50mph one day when we were racing in Armonk, NY on IBM's corporate headquarters hill, losing most of hte pigmented skin on his arms. He gave up skating and went into biking. He was the Bike messenger that inspired Kevin Bacon in some movie about bike messengers.
My high school yearbook photo in 1981 shows me buttboarding the school hill in Connecticut.
So after not buttboarding in many years I borrowed Daryl Lotts extra buttboard at the WLAC college race last November and ended up tied for 11th with Lee Dansie, believe me Lee is much better than I am- I wiped out.
I miss the sport and would like to do a few races.
