I been trying out buttboarding and luge this year. It's beem interesting, but i am kinda dissappointed with the performance of my buttbuttboard, the 12" wide deck makes cornering a chore and the short wheelbase feels jittery, taking the fun out of going fast. A luge overall seems to be much more enjoyable at higher speeds.
Anyways, i am starting to think about building a non lean-to-steer luge, most likely handsteered. Anyone have info or experience or thoughts on these kind of luge, lets hear it.

The Streets Of SF Streetluge Event has been held annually for the past 3 years and will be held again this year in July.
The 83' mark set by Jeffrey Schonzeit in 2000 was equalled by Jeffrey again in 2001. I was a close second with 82 1/2' in 2000 and I beat that mark with an 86 1/2' jump in 2001. This year Waldo Autry won by stunning the field with an awesome 94' jump! Once again I was the bridesmaid instead of the bride.
Yes, major whiplash. The prize money for my 1st and 2nd place in the 4-man and 6-man races went straight to my chiropractor!

Though i haven't touched up on this in awhile, im still looking for Lugers who live in New Mexico or close by maybe in arizona or colorado that would like to ride down here. So far ive only got a handful of people here but i cant imagine since ive been on the news and stuff, there still isnt anybody here picking up on it yet besides my team and a few peeps i already know of. If u do ride here let me know and i will set u up with some great luge runs.

I was watching the morning show "Live with Regis" and Chris Kline came on promoting his new movie "Rollerball" and he shot out a kudos to Biker Sherlock for teaching him how to luge. They also showed a clip from the movie with two guys luging down the streets. Was Biker one of them? Who was the other guy?

i just saw a big air comp on steet luges in SF on the extreme sports channel. the record jump was 83 ft and the riders looked like they were collecting a ton of whiplash when they landed. is this kind of thing a regular event at street luge events or was this a one off? r..

Wild Fro Racing LLC will maintain "road control" over the Dinosaur Point Road on scheduled days. At the present time the above weekend dates are tentatively scheduled through 12/14/02...(For current schedule, check your email for date additions and or deletions.) Riding will start at 9:30 am. and will go to at least 3:30pm.

thx hugh for the weight thing.
i found in my book "high tech cycling" have reference to this for cyclist descending. The equation was in some other physiology book done in 1979.
It gave an example of a 140lb cyclist descending/freewheeling a 10%grade at 42mph, whereas a 175lb cyclist would descend at 44 mph.

what is your core? foam? wood? metal?
anyways, use carbon fiber, it's stiffer.
I remember seeing a carbon luge somewhere, maybe at the sf big air. but i think it's a bad idea, cuz after crashing, you get fraying, splinters, etc.

Nope, it is foot steered, plus you could not lean your body due to the five point safety harness and full roll cage.

I don't know of a formula but I do know that on a fairly straight steep road (with good wheels, bearings, and straight axels) that my combined weight of around 270 lbs will smoke almost anyone who is not within about 10% of my combined weight.
But once it comes to turns (especially tight ones) the lighter guys are able to keep much more of their speed in the turns and especially when exiting them.
So there does seem to be a trade off there that will have to be dealt with depending upon what type of a road your running. The heavier you are the more speed you'll scrub in the turns and the faster you'll wear out your wheels! HR

question for the lugers regarding adding weight to the boards.
Recently, I been buttboarding and also trying out other's luge (luge weighing in @30-40lb, buttboard @10lb). I notice a big speed increase on the luge, i believe that weight has a lot to do with it, plus the oversize wheels and lower profile.
I am wondering if there is a general formula/guide for calculating the optimum weight.
Sample run, 2:10 sec on buttboard. 2:00 on luge.
I weigh in at 145lb.
Also, There seems to be no mention of ballast rules for buttboard under IGSA.

david, haven't seen the old rollerball in awhile, but i remember it was a weird sci fi, about rollerskater vs atv rider in a bowl, a televised death sport, kind of like the rep that luge has. ;)
