Yr 10 metal project- street luge
On 5/9/2008 zac wrote in from Australia  (60.228.nnn.nnn)

Hi guys, ive been luging for two and a half years now and butt boarding for three, in australia. My first three luges were woodies, so i would like to try metal to see the difference. My metal work teacher wants us to design our project so i chose a street luge. I'm planning on a pegless sled design with 4 Randal RII trucks and 8 83mm Abec 11 flywheels. Can anyone who a design like this give me some pointers or tips or steer me in a different direction to something hopefully better, thanks

double trucks
On 2/26/2008 PSR wrote in from United States  (75.68.nnn.nnn)

Adam, dual front trucks (something I 1st saw on Hickey's sled in '80) add stability and traction. Consider this; with your truck[s] mounted at mid-thigh, 2/3rds of your body mass is over that spot. Also, legs can increase angulation forces (point your feet Inside the planned turn) and are your primary brakes. Add that all up, and it just makes sense. Of course, back-in-the-day (not too long ago, actually), wheels made by rollerskate companies were the only 'big+soft' wheels readily available, and they would melt under certain high-speed, high-temp conditions. Krypto's even came with a "do not exceed 25 mph" warning label at one time. Having an extra pair in that kind of crisis certainly has saved my butt on occassion!

Yeah i have been trolling around reading as much as possible. I found street-luge.com which has been a massive help. Im currently taking a Tool and Die program so im trying to get my teachers in on the idea of building a street luge from top to bottom. I have access to the cnc and some Cad plans for trucks. Its a massive project so im trying to pace myself with it. the pipe dream is to have most of the sled cnc'ed the trucks made and then if its not ungodly expensive to produce a mold for a luge specific wheel. right now though im just starting to think about designs. and for that i gotta understand more about the sport.

Why two trucks at the front of the luge instead of the back? I still cant figure that one out. is that for grip when your sitting up for airbreaking? or is it a personal prefferance thing. I would assume that different configurations of the trucks might be better for different things. Straight line speed vs lots of twisty corners.

Adam, in N.H., there's the crew from GSI. I believe they used to offer luge training..

I've posted a few tips/hints here myself. However, Dave Auld's site (auldovertheroad ? Not sure?) is one I recall as having some great beginner info.

On 2/25/2008 Adam Winston wrote in from Canada  (72.138.nnn.nnn)

Yesterday i got a chance to really take a street luge out. I normally Dh but i wanted to try something different. And i gotta say riding a luge at 90km/h for the first time was the best thing i have ever done! Ok next step. How do i learn more where should i be looking and reading? and when i eventually get a luge what are the best things to consider when purchasing or building a luge. I understand that personal preference comes into it a lot, so i want to learn as much as i can before i drop too much coin into this.

thanks in advance!

Jet Luge on HDTV Today
On 1/5/2008 Bob wrote in from United States  (76.106.nnn.nnn)

The long awaited airing of a show Blue Smoke Racing shot this last summer is now showing on the HD Channel MOJO in a show called Gear. You will see some of my B-roll from a World Cup race in Ohio, the Jet Luge at the track and a street luge lesson with plenty of gratuitous shots of the big green ABEC11 sticker.

Special thanks to Chris Hicks and Chris Buono for being on the team that day. There is also have a spot with one of the Exkate's Electric boards on the show.

This is Gear episode 13 go here for the schedule
