There are two different terrains in sandboarding. Coastal dunes and valley desert dunes. Coastal dunes are generally smaller and have more character. Dessert dunes are up to 600 feet tall and relatively flat surface. If you want an increadible time, go to a contest advertised on sandboard.com and pay your entry fee and get all day rides to the top in a sandrail. You don't really have to compete, it is worth the fee for sure. Bring a bigger board, possible twin tip, for yards on end of speeds so fast I promise you would purposely blow out in order to save yourself. Coastal dunes, bring a shorter uni-directional board for short (30 foot) deccents at very brisk speeds. Both stages are great for big air. See the difference on video at www.sandskate.com don't try to make yourself until you are experienced. NOTHING is worse than walking up the hill to ride a lame board down.
This is just about the best exercise next to surfing, that I can think of, there is also a chiropractic feature. When you slamm often enough your body becomes a loose gelatin of knott free joy.

I've talked with Jack about trying this for awhile now.
It seems really cool...except for the walk back up the hill.
I lazy what can I say. I just got done skating this 5 story parking garage that has an elevator that you can skate up to at the end of the run.

You can rent sandboards and ride the dunes at Monterey. They rent sandboads at the local surf shop. Carmel beach and Sand City both have dunes.

Greetings Friends! We went up to Florence to close the sandboard shop down for the season. BUT, we're still renting too many boards so decided to leave the boards and keep on renting them out. That's great news for sandboarding. Oregonians are going crazy for it!

Sand gets everywhere, not much you can do about this but googles will protect your eyes, I just wear barefeet inside windsurf straps so no worries about it getting inside your shoes. It doesn,t really graze you or anything, but I,d recomend wrist guards.

Two sandboarding questions...
First... how do you keep the sand from entering your clothing/boots/socks/undies and grinding the skin right off of you? Seems like it would be like beach sand in the tuna salad sandwhich!
Second... any of you guys in the So Cal area? I'd like to give it a try once before I invest in some equipment! I'd love to come out and shoot some pics and give one a whirl (I wear a size 11.5 shoe if that matters)

A sandboard will also work on pineneedles, steep grass hills, and various other types of vegetation/terrain. The slopes need to be quite steep, a hard grassy surface will provide speed, but not much control as the rail can,t dig into the surface. Always consider the enviroment you are riding on first. Another fun place to ride is on a trampoline, great for practicing those airs.

Is it possible to ride on sandboard on other surface than sand for exampale grass, stones, or leafs???
