Yo psYch0Lloyd, your "the uni-skate PSR, it originated from something that broke" reminds me of the first street contest I ever entered (sometime around '84-'85)...
I broke my board during a warmup session and had to use someone elses' board during my run. Anywho, the last move I did was a one-footed tail wheelie using one of the halfs of my broke deck. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

HC,thanks for tossing that address up here. The info was enlightening, and has note of something I've noticed in the past, that if you combine old and new moves, you get "fresh" style.I wonder how soon we'll see blunt-end street-style boards with gription on the truck hangers for Pogo-nollie variations!

You're right about the uni-skate PSR, it originated from something that broke. That first one had a foot shape carved into the griptape. The vehicle later evolved into one that I took on the Pepsi tours w/me and it had a couple of Frisbees slapped on either side of a circular core (what was left of an old Archeryflex). I used to send that spinning across the floor and then jump on it. Whichever way I landed on it was the way I rode it. As I got better I could pump forwards backwards and little sideways in a pinch, go into 360's and then exit in any direction. I'd fall over if I stepped on one now, I'm sure I could pick it back up again (but I'd rather not). It was just fine for the time...

Uni-Skate? I thought Sidlo had simply broken one to many rollerskates... JUMP onto it from 2 ft out?!?! Nuts! Anyway,I wanted to thank you for tossing the Vid up,Dan.Nice stuff. Ever think of getting some of 'the good Ol' boys' together and make a bigger, burlier video? Just a thought.

Okay! More like it...

...Thanks Dan, I was wondering when you were gonna do it.

Now how about that first move and the rest of the no-trick freestyle routine concept? So maybe my idea was more surf oriented and not dance based. Or is it too much to ask for? BTW, You should see how crossover switches look like when pulled at full speed during a hands-down carve...

PSR,

First off, props to Al Sidlo (aka PsychoLloyd) for pioneering the technique of riding the uni-skate. I learned it from him, and he was better on it than I've ever been.

I start by placing my left foot on the left side of the "deck," then I carefully push with my right foot and place it next to my left foot. There's some skill involved in catching your balance at the start.

Another technique, which Al developed, involves just jumping on the damned thing with both feet at the same time. I used to be able to do that from a distance of 2 - 3 feet. A bit risky!

If anyone is interested, Webmaster Adam has generously posted my new freestyle video, "Four Wheels Down," on the NCDSA Links page. (Actually, it's a highly-compressed 5MB QuickTime version of the original 900MB all-digital video.)

I made the 4-minute video in July. In a freeform format, it showcases the expression-oriented, pure-gliding approach to flatland freestyle that I began developing in the 1980s.

Camera and editing are by noted skateboard documentarian Robert Kittilä, who helped create the legendary 1980s series of documentaries by the Powell-Peralta Corporation.

All comments and feedback are welcome. If you enjoy the film, please feel free to pass it along to anyone you like. I also have high-definition VHS copies available.

Cheers,
Dan

Intent of event

In 2001, the United Skateboard Association invited the top amateur skateboard series from the United States and Canada to participate in the Beast of The East Championship 4. This was the first time in the history of skateboarding that amateur series united in a multi-series championship.

During the same historic championship weekend, the United Skateboard Association also invited the World Freestyle Association to host a Pro/AM freestyle championship. This union was a great success, attracting freestyle competitors from throughout the United States and Europe.

For 2002, the United Skateboard Association is taking this common championship to the next level. Top amateur skaters from several contest series throughout the world will be invited to descend upon Houston, TX for the first annual STAMPEDE invitational.

The United Skateboard Association will also include the World Freestyle Association to host another world championship freestyle event. Event coordinator A.J. Kohn akohn@hotmail.com

The October 27th Frostburg contest has been canceled and will be replaced by an event at Rhomney in July.

I would like to hear from freestylers in the Santa Barbara, Ventura, LA and Orange County areas for help in developing a few small flatland events.

The US National Flatland Freestyle Championship will be held in Frostburg MD. on Sunday October 27th, at the FCCI facility.
Registration begins at 9:30 am followed by practice sessions and then the contest starts at noon.

Entry fee is $27.00

Do to the fact that the 2002 World Flatland Freestyle Championship will be held in Houston TX. in December, most, if not all, of the top pros and ams will not will not attend the US Nationals...just not economical for the under funded top skaters to make it to both. We did not plan to have them so close together but...things got changed around for the World Championship Date.

Now this leaves things at the top wide open for some of you re-entering freestylers to snag a title and make your grand re-entrance into the new era of freestyle.

There is decent interest in the US Nationals from the groms so I'm sure we will have at least the same number of entrants as the German and Swedish Opens...just not the experience levels.

There will be a number of Divisions to meet the interests of the ams and groms, to go along with the top divisions.

Divisions:
Pro Open
Am Advanced- no age group
Am 12 and under
Am 13 through 16
Am 17 and over
Masters 35 and Over
Grandmasters 50 and over

Probably a 360 OPen and a Best Trick Open contest also...depends on the number of entrants and time available.

I'm not sure yet what the prizes are.

FCCI ( Freestyle Country Clubs Inc.) has a link on the WWW.reversefreestyle.com/f site if you need directions.
