destructo speed metal ABEC-5
On 4/23/1999 Vlad Jones wrote in from ()

I have some Destructo Speed Metal bearings on my board (ABEC-5) and they are rad...they get gritty and what not real easy but oddly that doesn't slow them down...mine are fast as hell...I'd recommend them as being comparable to swiss...

easy,
steve

Gum-Out
On 4/17/1999 Steve wrote in from ()

Be careful when you use carburetor cleaner to clean your bearings. That crap eats through anything and everything. When I was cleaning my bearings, I put them in a plastic bowl so I could spray them, and the Gum-Out ate the bottom of the bowl right off. When I was letting the bearings dry, I put them on a paper towel on top of my deck, and the cleaner ate the ink off my stickers. It cleans really well, though. Got all the crap off and made them shiny like new. When I was done cleaning, I used slot car lube to grease them.

Swiss vs. whatever
On 4/14/1999 Kaylee wrote in from ()

Yes, Swiss are some of the fastest and smoothest out there,
but bearings are not that big of a factor in speed. I used to
ride swiss but noticed how sensitive the gold shields are.
Gold is a very soft metal, I banged them up all the time.
Anyway, Now I'm riding ABEC 3 Pig bearings, which remind me
more of Germans. My wheels don't free-spin like they used to,
but I ride 68mm/85a wheels with Pigs and my friend rides
61mm/98a wheels with brand new Swiss and I have to drag my foot to keep
up with him on hills, while he's pushing fo speed. And these Pigs are lasting way longer
than my Swiss ever did. So, yeah Swiss are faster and better,
but in reality wheels matter way way more than bearings and
if you have semi-decent bearings in good wheels you'll haul
ass regardless. Go Figure!

Steve,

The Ninja Bearings website stopped responding some time ago so we removed it from the Links page. Re your bearing questions, there are some very informative posts in the Bearings Archives section. Just scroll to the bottom of the Bearings forum and click the 'Show Archives' button.

Ninja skates
On 4/4/1999 Steve wrote in from ()

Hey, how about those Ninjaskates that were advertised here a while ago? Are they any good? I mean, with ABEC7 Japanese equivalent, they have to be, but are they worth the price? And how about ceramic? Are ceramic worth the $20 per bearing?

china bones.
On 3/31/1999 eggman wrote in from ()

I don't know if "really good" is the phrase. How about "good enough". I have a pair, and they work good. They roll fast and long. Not as good as the Swiss Bones, but worth the price.

Bones
On 3/26/1999 JB wrote in from ()

swiss are not made for skateboarding, they are made for the same &^*&^* that all other 608's are for, keep dreaming. Yes they kick ASS, just remember if you stick to the 608 size they were originally made for vacs. and electrical motors.. the load diffrence you suggest is B.S. so don't talk about stuff you aren't familiar with!! Next time just say they are cool!! don't try to be what your NOT...

Have fun skating!!

Swiss Bones
On 3/20/1999 BomberX wrote in from ()

All of you people who are riding abecs and germans are crazy. all of those bearings are made for machines and industrial crap. The only real skateboard bearings are swiss bones. Unlike the others they have vertical strength for the weight of your body, the others are strong horizontally. also they are easily cleaned and most shops give a nice warranty

If you don't have removable sheild bearings and you want em clean(er)try putting them all into a pan and boiling them in water. It may sound a bit mental but it gets the cack off a treat. Simply re-grease after, nice

Black Panthers
On 3/11/1999 Phillip Chandler wrote in from ()

Quickies Black Panthers are the best bearings. THey are super fast and last forever. I have had mine for two years and they are just as fast as when I got them and the only thing I have done to them is wipe them off with a wet rag.

China Bones(red)
On 3/3/1999 Joe Shredmeister wrote in from ()

Just wanted to let anyone that cares know: my first set of china bones are still rolling better than ever. After breaking in, they were stress tested by entry into a swimming pool(still full of chloronated h20), I quickly disrobed and retrieved my submerged stick, took it home and completely dissassembled. I then used some automotive electric cleaner on the bearings and left overnight to dry out of pure laziness. The next day I lubed with Powell speed cream and reassemled my ride. I have since only done a few routine maintenence cleanings/lubings on them when guilt or Karma called my name, and they still roll like nothing else. I might not ever pay the premium for swiss bones if my luck holds out.Keep rippin'.

China Bones Red
On 1/29/1999 Charles wrote in from ()

To get the balls back into your bones do the following.

1.) Place the Red Shield Back in the bearing, it should just reseat with light pressure.
2.) select a flat surface and lay down a dish towl (Keeps the balls from rolling away)
3.) Lay the bearing on the table with the red shield down
4.) Place the center race in to the outer race, and stack the balls around troff formed by the two races.
5.) Lift the center race with a pair of needle nose pliers and the balls will fall back into place (Ok maby they need a littel help, but they will go).

This assumes that the bearing in question is fully disassembaled, I have never be abel to add just one ball, so tear the breaing down the rest of the way. Ps if the red rubber comes off of the outer shiled the bearing shield will not re-seat.

Lots of Luck this is a real hair puller the first 10 times but then you get good at it.

WD40
On 1/8/1999 Dan wrote in from ()

Using WD40 is bad! It will help for a while, but if you don't reapply it almost constantly it will corrode and screw up your bearings.

offset
On 12/24/1998 turner wrote in from ()

Offset bearing cavity (on inside, of coarse) sticks better by allowing the lip of the wheel to "flat tire effect". Carving is considered immediate speed reduction due to torque applied friction with the object of using centripetal force to maintain the turning speed once it has been reduced. BIG LIPPED WHEELS can only be handled by proper trucks, the hammer effect in the lever arm means that a larger wheel will multiply the force applied on the spring dampening device (torsion bushing or regular bushing) resulting in more wheel travel which will equal a smaller radius turn. The turn achieves maximum wheel travel during the slowest protion of the "carve" and therefore is beneficial to recovery of the turn. But beware! your king pin washer may stop the wheel oscilation and flatten out the bell-curve, sending your board forward of your desired radius. Recomended wheel PAYASO ROADIE RACER

Snake Oil

Snake Oil is amazing. It has my ABEC-5 speed metals rolling like crazy. I rode the bearings for a couple of weeks to let them break in. I used the snake oil, and damn.... For five bucks a bottle it's hard to beat.

I.S. Speed Spray
On 12/21/1998 Mark Wilson wrote in from ()

I.S. Speed Spray is an all-in-one bearing spray that cleans, lubricates and prevents rust. Just spray into the wheel hub, spin and wipe. It is non sticky and penetrates well between the inner race and shield. That is all it takes to refresh your bearings.
For a more thorough cleaning/lube, first remove the bearings from the wheels. I.S. has hand held tools for removing and replacing bearings swiftly and safely. Check out their products -- http://www.skateboard.net/is
